RayXmen: The reasons you stated are very good examples why we should stop comparing PCs to consoles. Sure the consoles may have similar hardware to the PC, and they might even work the same way. But they're two different things designed for two completely different purposes. PCs, yes, granted you can do a lot more with it, no doubt, if you need anything more than gaming the PC is yours. PS2, is a gameing console, should I repeat, only designed to play games. If you're not interested in games, stay with your PC. They have two competely different markets and completely different targeted customers. Again you're using unreasonable arguments to put down the PS2, like I said "can PS2 do this... can PS2 do that, can PS2 do blah blah..." its pointless. You're asking for something the gaming console is not designed to do. All comes down to what you need, PC fans will die with their PCs, but there is no reason to forbit people from buy PS2 just because the PC can do more? PC owners like me not satisfied with today's PC games seek alternatives like PS2, so is that a sin or what?

<< when someone shells out $299 for PS2, they not only have the many PS2 games that are available, but also a whole library of games from the 1st playstation >>

Gee what a concept, If I want to play my playstation games I'll just use my current playstation. Why would you want to buy today's consoles to play yesterday's games?

Enough of this maddness!!

Anyone who got the August (Im pretty sure) edition of PCGamer has the reasons why us PC Gamers choose our machines over little boxes.

I liked that summary...

rudds

if you are going to say that all games are unoriginal?.. then why did PS2 have games like Dynasty Warriors 2.. and SSX? and also.. seeing from your statement.. then it has to apply for EVERY game every made.. since it's like a spawn of the first ever game created for the genre.. then that means.. ALL games are unoriginal... right? 😉

RayXmen

you comparison of console to PC is like comparing apples to organes...

apples and oranges have meat inside.. like the console and PC..

BUT.. the console is strictly a console where it runs games. it even has games that the PC will Never Ever have... do you see Mario or perhaps Zelda on PC.. no... except with emulation and besides.. most games on consoles are much better then the ones on pc anyways. the console will never surpass the usefulness of the PC.. since it's not made and i repeat.. NOT MADE to run applications.. that's the main difference..

consoles and pcs have different objectives.. you fail to see that.. you can't mix both intogether and compare them

Rehashed and unoriginal.. can't you say the same about most N64 games? (Don't yell at me, I have one too).

Most companies broke their creativity piggy banks back in the 8bit days. Some companies use same general ideas but take it to an entirely new level (Mario 64, Gauntlet Legends maybe). Some basically throw a few more colours into the same thing of old (Frogger perhaps), and some companies even know they can't think of anything new and release their old stuff again (Williams, Namco, but they do make good new games).

Sometimes advances in technology is a bihtch. Look at EA. There's a reason the gameplay on the Genesis was so awesome. They pretty much maxxed out the graphics capabilities in the 93 games, so all they could really do was ultra tweak the gameplay. Take it to the PSX and they create a great game finally with NHL 98, but instead of taking the beautiful and smooth graphics and tweaking the gameplay, they try to make it look better to compare more to the more powerful PC, and of course NHL 99 was slow and choppy and the gameplay still sucked. Their gameplay still sucks to this day because they're so concerned about the flash and glitz.

Will the PS2 look better? It has the potential to. Will the gameplay be better? Maybe. I'm SOOO glad Sony invented a new controller for their system and added 4 ports. Oh wait, they didn't. And finally, will developers spend as much time on gameplay as they do graphics? Doubtful. You can't tell how great a game plays by staring at the box, but boy is it pretty. When all the systems are out and some games are on the table, a slight difference in the BEST graphics won't mean diddly. If it plays like a champ, I will be there.

<<Gee what a concept, If I want to play my playstation games I'll just use my current playstation. Why would you want to buy today's consoles to play yesterday's games?>>

I hear everyone saying that, and its just plain unreasonable. Why would people bother to take out their current gen PSX when the PS2 can fully support all the PSX games? So we're against backward compatibility now? After this backward compatibility feature was never meant to be a selling point, its mainly for the convinience for people. It's like saying you HAVE TO run an ATA33 drive on an old ATA33 controller, or you HAVE TO run an AGP2X video card on an AGP2X slot. It's stupid.

LXi, I think the bottom line for me is not that I think computer games are so much better, and not that I hate consoles, it just that I personally need a computer anyway, and therefore, since I have it already, I make it a gaming rig.

I don't care which plays games better, I enjoy playing with my computer, I enjoy getting updates, I enjoy modifying my computer to get a couple FPS more.

I enjoy it on a my computer...something that a consol cannot do. And of course, my buisness stuff.

Jonny: So do I? I never said that the PC is not good, I never try to compare them. Im not a huge PC gamer, I mostly need it for a variety of things other than gaming, just like you.

And like I said, consoles are not part of the PC market and therefore shouldn't be discusses amongst each other. The way I look at it is, if you enjoy PC games, especially FPS, get the $299 and buy yourself a GeForce2 GTS or Radeon. While Im gonna stick to my Voodoo3 and get a PS2 because I dont like to play on my PC. Many people dont get that idea.

LXi, PS2 cannot play every single PSX game available. Sony has already said they estimate 95% of the games will run, but older titles and games made before Duel Shock was introduced would most likely have problems running, if they do at all.

Course, that doesn't mean anything because I'm not spending $300 for a system I already own, just wanted to clarify something for you 🙂

Thanks for the info, I do have heard about some games not being compatible, but 95% isn't bad now is it? It's good enough for me, and a lot of people as well.

Did you get yours as an import? If so, did you install some mod chip that will make the Japanese console run US games?

I don?t own the current playstation and i plan on getting a Playstation2. I like the design and really am only interested in the new Madden Football game. I'm sure the dreamcast is an excellent system, but it just doesn?t motivate me to purchase it.

Bravo to the Sony marketing team. Whether the component shortage was intentional or not they know how to stir up the target audience without spending much money.

We'll see who wins when developers find a more powerful and easier to utilize system in the Gamecube and X-Box. Wanna know who'll win? The company that has the most first and second party resources. Wanna know who does?...Nintendo. The bottomline is, why would I put $300 down when I could get a cheaper more powerful console with way more original titles. Do you think Square and Konami are stupid. They'll bring their games to whatever platform it is that has the largest istalled user base. I might be biased but I think I use a decent amount of logic when I conclude that that the PS2 just doesn't have the original titles that the X-Box and the Gamecube will posses.

I'll keep playing and tweaking my PC and I'll buy whichever console it is that can take me back to that magical world of Hyrule.

<<Do you think Square and Konami are stupid. They'll bring their games to whatever platform it is that has the largest istalled user base.>>

No they're not stupid. In fact, do you know what plays a huge role of determining the user base? The games. Konami and Square are locked in the Sony deal and has start MANY PS2 projects already. People buy PS2 because of these games, orginal games. When you have big name game makers behind you, announcing flagship games on the PS2 flatform, you can attract buyers, and when you do, you sell systems, and when you sell, Square and Konami have reason to stay. The Super Nintendo system use to dominate the market because of the huge support behind it, same with PSX, now it's just natural that these PSX supporters move on to the PS2 flatform. I dont see Sony's support diminishing anytime soon.

umm.. shouldn't the most use base now is the Playstation? 🙂

Square "may" go back to Nintendo.. but... they had a rough parting before switching to the psx..

Zelda.. bah.... i wanna see Dark Cloud first before playing Zelda..

I have the PS2. I bought in Hong Kong and brought it over here to Canada. I have about 10 games for it, some are in Japanese.

I had some friends over for the weekend and they really wanted to see the PS2, and no doubt they wanted to play the games. We watched some DVDs with it and then we played some of the games I had. Their first reaction was that it had really cool graphics. After a bit everyone seemed kinda bored. Not everyone could read Japanese and the English titles that I had were kinda dull aside from all the glitz.

I mentioned that I had Elite Force on 3 networked computers upstairs and we spent the next 27 hours playing CTF and Holomath.

Right now all I use the PS2 for is watching DVD movies in my room. I'm waiting for some better multiplayer games to come out (kinda like Mario Kart 64, that game maybe old but it's still fun). I *did* have this Rally type racing game but it was in Japanese and while it was fun racing... I dunno it lacked something. Graphics were really cool though!

Konami isn't "locked" in anything. They have already said they are developing for both Xbox and Gamecube. Meanwhile Square has been seen in talks with both Microsoft and Nintendo, and have even hinted that they are not going to be a Sony only company this gen. The only reason they were on 1 console last gen is because Nintendo went cartridges. Now that there are 3-4 viable consoles for them to develope for they are not going to stay "loyal".

Granted they might not be locked but before they start any projects(which are in development or already out), they'd have to pay the licensing fee, now why would they be so stupid to dump the projects they've started and waste the fee they paid?

Konami will make games for X-box, thats for sure because Konami and MS are allies. As for Gamecube, who knows? They might be making games for them but will they be flagship games? I doubt it. Same with Square, Namco, and Capcom.

Wow...you guys still on this subject?
LXI have you heard of bleem? Computers have the power to play any game that is run on any console.

You know what...Computers made PS2 games...people programmed them on computers. Computers are limited in the variety of games you say? PS2 has great selection of games you say? That is not the situation right now is it? Even if PS2 did have more games...PC can play those games too.

PS2 is not a computer you say, apples and oranges? Then why is the orange keep trying to be like the apple? The ps2 is internet capable now, has a thing called a MODEM, has RAMBUS ram, and all parts you find in that thing are going to be on most computers.

Enough with this debate...its pointless. At least one thing is for sure. PS2 will have very little effect on the computer market...if any effect at all. Actually I think it will help the market, because PS2 wants mass production of the rambus ram, as well as other COMPUTER related parts in there console. Which will no doubt give computer lovers Like me to enjoy the supply side increase of our market.

THe PS2 can affect the PC GAMING market, maybe not hardware per se.

Look at Metal Gear Solid. I'm sure it takes 1 1/2 years to port over to the PC. Stupid exclusive deals hurts everyone who doesn't have such and such system. Square is kind of bad with Final Fantasy on the PC.. at least it comes out not TOO far from its PSX version, even though the graphics blow 🙂

and the Xbox is full of sh*t

That's a very intellegent comment. Care to comment why it's full of sh!t?

<< I hear everyone saying that, and its just plain unreasonable. Why would people bother to take out their current gen PSX when the PS2 can fully support all the PSX games? >>

Because that added support for origninal playstation games raises the price of the playstation2.
