PSX2 won't be as successful as the PSX was

PC will surpass it in no time. Technology moves way to fast on the PC

<<Yeah but can you post here on the forums on a PSX2?>>

Can you buy a PC that cost $299? Let me know if you can find one b/c then I'll buy the PC instead. Oh yea dont forget the gaming on that $299 PC has to be at least as good as on PS2.

BTW, there is no "X" in PlayStation2.

can you buy a PS2 that can input NTSC, save it as AVI, or MPEG, and then convert it to Mpeg 4?

can you play MP3's on a PS2?

can you write anything on a PS2?

can you run ICQ on a PS2?

can you UPGRADE a PS2?

can you put Linux on a PS2?

can you rip CD's on a PS2?

I could go on and on and ON for a LONG time, it will take quite some time before the PC goes, becuase it is now just becoming a VERY good device to integrate in things such as the stereo.

the PC is a device that can do nearly everything. how well it does this, depends mostly on the software quality, and the hardware speed.

It will be a while before the playstation2 dominates (if it ever does). I could care less about the launch and the games. I won't consider getting one til the great games come out and the price drops to $200 or less.

Then why does everybody insist on comparing prices?

Because all the arguments you can come up with are "can PS2 do this", "can PS2 do that", "can PS2 do blah blah"...

It's $299, sure, people pay the $299 for the gaming, not MP3 converting, not video capture, not installing Linux(gee what an idea). As for internet, there will be broadband or something, and it will play CDs, VCDs(possibly), and DVDs.

<<You can pay $150 and get a Dreamcast and better gaming.>>

Better? In your opinion right? Have you seen PS2? Doubt it. The PS2 game line up is far superior to DC's.

I really don't see the lure of the PS2. I mean I keep up with all the consoles and their respective games and frankly the PS2 doesn't look appealing. It costs too much first off, and all the others are having things standard that you have to pay extra for on the already expensive PS2 (DC's Modem, all others 4 player support). The graphics aren't anything that the others can't do...even after they "fixed" the AA problem every shot and movie I've seen is still plagued with jaggies (DC games even look better still). There isn't a single launch game that looks good enough to justify me buying the thing, although there are a few that will be coming out later on. They may have great 3rd party support now, but they have almost no exclusives, which are important. Going back to the 4 player support thing: when it is inherently part of the console like N64, DC, Gamecube, and Xbox game developers that are making games with a multiplayer aspect nearly always make a 4 player mode. Whereas if the console doesn't support it from the get-go (ie: you gotta pay $40 to buy a multi-tap) then game developers know that most people only have 2 controllers and 2 slots and so they don't make their games for more than 2 players (look at PSX...how many games supported more than 2 players in comparison to N64?). The same holds true for net games. Now that Sega has their network up, the console comes with a modem, the game developers are gonna support it.

EDIT:

And that is your oppinion. Mine is that its lineup is crap in comparison for quite a few months.

Plain and simple - Consoles will not replace computers.

I think the best quote I have heard about consoles is the one I am about to post. It concerns the Xbox but applies to the PS2 and any other console

"As with any console, Xbox is a snapshot of a technology at a given point in time, and two years from now, Xbox is going to look very antiquanted in terms of features and capabilities and performance."

One day, maybe, maybe, people will stop arguing about their hardware and talk about the games, which in the end, is what it's all about.

:)

I play games, not systems.

Which is why I mentioned exclusives. Why buy a console that doesn't have any games that the others don't have? Especially if it costs more, and is missing features that are included with other consoles (that in turn makes game developers make games with things you want in them, like multiplayer/net play). I would certainly opt for the console that has games that I can't get anywhere else, and that has games with features that just aren't happening on the other.

Which is my point with the dreamcast, low price, great games. What more could you want?

Have it saved on my HD. It's being developed for PS2, Xbox, and from what little info IGN could pry out of Konami: Gamecube.
