The Pill

Interesting...

Was doing some research, just so I'd be more informed when I bought this up tomorrow...

The basics

Staying on schedule matters

Never was involved with someone who was on the pill, but now that we're engaged, I'm planning to bring this up to Thumper this weekend (and hope it doesn't go over like a lead balloon). I figured that being informed about the benifits and risks ahead of time would be a wise thing. I'm sure she knows this stuff, but this way I'll avoid sounding like a complete idiot. 😉

It shall be interesting to see what kind of reaction I get to bringing this subject up. 😀

EDIT: BTW, I had no idea there were health beneifts to taking the pill, cool...

Any women here take it? Any interesting tidbits of info I should know that I'm not going to hear from the official sources?

SOOOOO much better than condoms. I hate those things.

My fiance is afraid of doctors, so she makes me come with her to talk to them aboutt hat stuff, so you can ask me any questions you need, I very well might know the answer. 🙂

depo provera proved useful for a former girlfriend of mine. norplant might be considered, too. neither require daily anything.

I got my ex on the pill last yr....probably the best thing i ever did. Sure beats pullin out all the time. The pills made my ex sick so the doc said to take em before she went to bed and that helped alot.

To be honest, we've gotten lazy the past few weeks when it comes to condoms. 🙁

She comes over, we watch a movie, cuddle, etc... Well, you know. 😛

We're both clean, so that isn't an issue, and to be honest it IS better without them... We both want kids, just not right yet. After we've been married a few years first and our income is more stable.

I don't really have any specific questions... Ok, I do have one... It doesn't hurt their sex drive, does it? That would kinda defeat the point, if you know what I mean. 😛

Other than that, I really don't know much about them, other than what I've just read online. I'd like to know the unofficial story... 🙂

The intial side effect is too great for most women before they get use to it, and if they could endure it they would be on it already.

And, then there is the long term effect as well.

de... err what? I thought they took norplant off the market, wasn't it causing cancer or something?

What's the first one?

If there are other options besides the pill, I don't know about them. I'm always open to other ideas...

My fiance tried depo provera first, and bled for three months straight, basically (that sucked...). She switched to ortho-cyclen and since then everything's been good (took her body about two months to get used to that, she was a little... odd, for a while (both menstrally and emothionally) but it was minor).

The pill is the most wonderful thing. It makes for no more 'were out' situations and the best part is it sort of control her moods.

My g/f has been on the pill for about a year now, and she said it took a few weeks to get used to at first, that it made her a lil nauseated, but then everything was fine....and so far, so good. Something else that you guys might want to look into is the patch. It has all the same stuff in it as the pill, but you only have to take it once a week instead of every day. My girlfriend's roommate is either on it or about to get on it soon, so thats another viable option.

My girl has been on the pill for about 3 months now..

It's been great. It doesen't make her sick or anything weird at all.

Depo seems to have more instances of the more severe side effects... But you have to make sure she takes the pill everyday.. or it can very easily become useless, lol...

And yes, I agree... Condoms are teh suck. We were always very lazy with them too.. Eventually we got tired of being paranoid month to month.. It's horrible when you're actually like, "Woohoo!" when she starts her cycle. :Q 😛

Just a warning about the pill. A really good friend of mine's girlfriend was on the pill. She was 23 years old and a nurse at a local hospital here. One day she walked into the front door of the hospital to go to work around 6:20am and she collapsed. She was dead within a few minutes...the cause of death wasn't publicly known, but the word was that she got a blood clot from the BC pills.

I'm just sending out a warning about BC...make sure that Thumper's doctor knows which ones are best and safest....

Another note: There are a few different kinds and one or two kinds aren't as effective as the others. I know because one of my exgfs got pregnant when she was on BC.....twice. Once again, these are EXTREME cases, but I've probably seen more REAL LIFE negative aspects of BC than anyone else. It's very effective if she uses the right kind and can be somewhat safe as long as she's careful about reading the do's and don'ts on the bottle. 😉

EDIT: ACK! I forgot to say the other thing too. Some females have small weight gain issues because BC makes them think they're pregnant... It causes abnormal hormone problems. I only know this because my sister started having issues after she took it as well... I've known lots of thin people on it, but once again...just trying to raise awareness. 😉

do you know if she was a smoker? I know the risk of heart attack/stroke is ~10x greater if you smoke

I am one of those guys who is against the pill... I wouldnt want my gf taking it...

something about taking unnecessary medication that's known to cause side-effects just doesnt sit well with me... condomns might be inconvenient, but it's still better than risking my gf's health...

Oh by the way, recently I have been seeing commericals about some birth control patch... apparently it's the same as pills, except it's a patch (like stop smoking patches) which the women can stick anywhere on their body... 1 patch works for 1 full week, which might be better than taking a pill everyday... Just thought I would mention it since you are considering the pill...

Yeah ortho-tricyclene comes in a week long patch form now.

Just about ANY drug has potential side effects. Tylenol can kill your liver. Aspirin can do all kinds of nasty things. Birth control drugs are no different.

Grasshopper, I applaud you for doing your homework. This is a decision you and your woman need to make together, and you may very well wish to consult with a healthcare professional as you do so.

I'm a big fan of depo provera, but then again, it's not my body. A pill has to be taken every day. Depo requires one shot every 3 months. I like the "set it and forget it" aspect.

But you are not taking one Tylenol or Aspirin everyday for an extended period of time (years)... Besides, BC pills are designed to change a woman's hormone levels, and have well known (and potentially serious) side-effects like high blood pressure, mood swings, etc... I know I wouldnt want my gf to have unneccessary higher blood pressure just because of an inconvenience...

I dont think you can compare the pill with regular medication like Tylenol or Aspirin...

The pill is great; condoms suck.

Having a dad who's an OB/GYN helps since my wife gets them free. 🙂

She's only forgotten once, and it required almost 2 months to get back on safe schedule.

The side benefit is very regular periods.

"If there are other options besides the pill, I don't know about them. I'm always open to other ideas..."

Somehow, I doubt that. I think I now see why some people, especially women, get so pissed about men being against abortion. With attitudes like most of you, it's no wonder! They say it's the woman who has to suffer through pregnancy, so she should have the right to terminate if she wants. Since men don't have to go through that, they shouldn't have a say about abortion.

Now I see that so many here are too damn lazy, stupid or selfish to bother with a condom. Better to have their GF suffer through God knows what to her hormones, physical and mental changes of birth control pills. Pretty much disgusts me! :disgust:

There is NO FVCKING WAY I'd insist on having my GF, fiancee or wife take that crap. We had sex plenty, but found better ways to keep from getting pregnant. How the hell do our schools spend so much time teaching kids about sex, and end up turning out students with attitudes like I'm hearing in this thread, or worse, teenage parents? Pathetic! Nobody believes in good healthy sex, or planned parenthood more than I do, but I sure don't look to the pill as the solution.

You say, "I'm always open to other ideas...", well why not think a little bit harder about other ways you could have sex without coitus. Think about the side effects of the pill before you get so damn lazy or selfish about using a condom. Use your imagination, use the Web, read some more!

My ex was on the pill for about half a year while i was with her. It was good, but it seemed to make her really pissy sometimes. I dunno, overall good though.
