I can't remember if it was dreamcast or the original Xbox, but one of them supported 56K play. So some people were on 56K vs people who had cable/DSL, no fighting chance.

Secondly I think Q3 on Dreamcast or XBOX allowed you to play against PC players on some shared maps, that was unfair, lol.

That was Dreamcast and on Quake 3 there was a specific version and pak set you could run on the PC that allowed you to connect to Dreamcast servers. I did it to play with a friend of mine who didn't have a PC that would run the game at the time. The dreamcast had a mouse and KB option though. It wasn't as good as on PC and you were at a hefty disadvantage anyway.

If any of you guys are putting you Xbox just on Standby, there is a known problem with the Xbox apparently not flushing the RAM properly and causing games not to load. The fix is a hard reboot.

Just had it happen to me.

I used to have that problem. Now I shut my xbox down all the way and unplug it once a week when I am cleaning my entertainment center because of how dusty it is. Once I started doing that, I stopped having issues.

Yeah, I just had it and hard rebooted after looking it up on the internet. At first, I thought my HDD became corrupted or something and I'd have to redownload all my games (which would be a pain). Thankfully, it seems some kind of RAM flushing issue I'm sure will be fixed fairly soon.

Yeah, I have twice had applications basically refuse to load. Forza was one of them and it might of been the first time as well. I should note that its an xbox that is used everyday for the last 3 months.

Biggest problem for me was both times remembering to turn back on the Standby power off after the restart.

The only issue like that I've seen was I tried playing forza and it asked me to install or log in as the user who has it installed. I told it to install and 10 seconds later it said it was done and I could run it. I don't know what that was about.

I think that is for updates, because I get quite a few notifications of "<whatever game> installed" with the option to launch it. It happens with all my games it seems. I just assumed it was an update.

Yeah it sounds like it just needed to install the update. I wish it did this since it has all the data for the game stored on the console already, but it is still better than the old way.

We talked previously about how the Xbox would occasionally not launch the TV app after being asleep...

I read somewhere that if you disable the Xbox's control of turning on/off the DVR, that it would fix this issue. I tried it a few weeks ago, and I have not had any issues so far. (Prior to the setting change, the issue would occur for me every few days.)

Ghost has been almost unplayable for me since the DLC launch update. Anyone else experiencing this?

Any opinions on how the Xbox works as an all in one media center.

I really don't care about the games as much as I do the media center. I will replace my current uverse box and wdtv live if this does everything on one console. Does it play local content mkvs? Is the Xbox loud? My nephew just got the 250gb xbox and the fan in that thing is crazy loud.

I don't know about playing mkv, but I do know that it is really quiet. I haven't heard a peep from mine and it is always on because my tv is ran thru it.

Won't replace your uverse box or WDTV box. It's as silent as one can get with a modernish CPU and decent GPU. I probably hear more of it's random HDD activity one standby (not entirely sure whats it doing) then I have ever heard the fan. It can't play MKV's natively yet if ever, but that's because it's ecosystem is small and no DLNA or streaming apps (in network apps) are available yet.

It's strong parts are basic TV usage through your cable box and quick swapping between apps which include games. So seamlessly swapping from TV, to hulu, to Netflix, and so on. Which is made even more convenient with voice commands. It might eventually replace the need for the WDTV, but only once they patch in removable media.

Why would a console have MKV support out of the box? MKV is the "file format of the pirates". :p So, I guess the answer is... no, the X1 and PS4 cannot play MKVs. Neither console supports DLNA for transcoding a MKV. If you're looking for something to potentially bolster your live TV watching, you may like the X1.

Yeah MKV is basically for pirates. Not that I would advocate anything like that lol.

If it can't play mkv yet then I will hold off until it does. Surprised you can't do removable media either.

Glad to hear that it is quiet. When they patch in the needed updates I will buy one for sure. I have a Wii U. Wonder if that can be hacked to play mkvs... probably not

MKV isn't just for pirates. A lot of people store their videos in that format because it can do ac3 natively.

MKV isn't even a format. It is a container, and the difference between it and say MP4, is MKV meets all the requirements to be open source.

It has nothing to do with pirates and more to do with open software, which we know everyone in the business industry hates.

And, there are ways to get the Xbox One to play MKVs using some converter (I believe PS3 Media Server works, for example).

You can also add custom subtitles and multiple soundtracks inside an mkv file where some others are more limited. A lot of anime comes in mkv

I know MKV is not just for pirates, many people do use it for legit purposes. It is stupid the industry does not support the container. They are losing customers like me who would instantly purchase an Xbox One if they had that feature. Without it I doubt I will ever buy an Xbox One.

I said file format, which MKV is most definitely one... as are just about most other types of files that you encounter. If it wasn't a standardized file format, you would have one heck of a time creating and reading the files! :p

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_format

You're probably confusing my wording with people that think MKV is the same as MPEG4/AVC.

I know MKV is not just for pirates

Yeah... you think they'd understand why I put it in quotes! :p

Unplayable in what way? I've heard of people having lag issues since the update.

yeah... incredible lag. First, I would enter a game late.. each and everymatch. Team would cap a already, and be off to start capping b, then I would spawn in. Now, my bullets won't register or there's a crazy delay when it does register. WTF? So, I turned off and played some KI. Couldn't find anyone to play with online, so it might just be timewarner. However, I went to play DOTA on pc and that was fine. Just wondering if others are seeing this after the patch went out.
