I do not like IE10. Other than that and not knowing how to use metro, its not too bad so far.
What's wrong with IE10? I'm a FF user so I haven't spent too much time with it, but it didn't seem all that functionally different from IE9...

It doesn't support many HTML5 features for one. It might not be very relevant now but it may be later on and I find Chrome to have better functionality for me. Overall I just don't like the look and layout of IE. Never have

Been using Win8 all weekend now, and have a couple questions:

1) is there any way to change the default user / pre-login lockscreen? I'm getting sick of the ugly Seattle picture.

2) is there any way to search for all apps by a specific developer in the store?

1) Open the Charms bar (WinKey+C), tap settings, tap Change PC Settings, and Personalize should be the first option selected for you to change the Lock Screen picture.

2) not sure.

yeah, that changes it for the current user I want to change the pre-login screen.

Just search the developer as far as I can tell. Searching "microsoft" brings up all of MS's apps. "rovio" brings up angry birds, etc...

I don't get what you're trying to do then, because the instructions he gave you are correct. If you have multiple users on your computer, then the lock screen will show the configured picture of whatever user was last logged in.

I'm still not a fan of Windows 8, but have a lot of people asking for it to be installed...for the wrong reasons though:

Yesterday someone asked me if I could install it for them because they thought it would enable touch capability on their 2 year old Samsung laptop. D:

That is because Microsoft shows only the touch interface and yells people nothing about requiring compatible hardware.

I ran the pre release versions on my laptop.

I formatted it back to Windows 7.

I do not like Metro on a PC. I found myself trying to configure Windows 8 to be more like Windows 7 all the time... then I got thinking, why do this?

I like Windows 7, and its not like support is going to disappear for a while. I'll probably end up skipping Windows 8 unless something comes along that convinces me otherwise.

I'm sure you could script the change as well so it applied to everyone. I changed out that seattle pic a couple months ago because I didn't like it.

Similarly, you could also probably find the actual image file and replace it unless it's located in each user profile separately.

I'm the opposite, upgraded all my PCs that had 7 to Win8 Pro,Metro is not a big deal since I spend most my time on the desktop and have all my shortcuts pinned to taskbar, gaming wise not encountered any problems with my Steam or Origin games even with my overclocked CPU,basically Win8 has been rock stable and has yet to crash, also it boots faster and I have noticed improved battery life on my laptop computer.

M desktop PC which also has Win8 Pro I use for gaming, basically Metro is not a big deal since you don't have to spend your time in there, even when you do its not hard to find stuff.
I won't be surprised if Win9 keeps Metro since Microsoft is going in that direction ie towards tablet.

End of the day some people don't like changes but I find you can still get a good desktop experience out of Win8 if you take the time to adjust and customize it to your liking.
Verdict for me is well polished for a new launch and I can see Win8 getting better with time.

I am going to run it like 7. But just because I have Vista and an upgrade to 7 is a lot more than the $40 I paid for 8.
But I won't use Metro at all.

I can almost guarantee every version of windows will have metro or an updated version of it for touch screens. So is windows 7 the last os you use? Eventually you will almost be required to upgrade at some point. Maybe a new dx that will not work on win7 for example. Who knows

I wasnt gonna get win8 but for $40 I gave it a try and it is not all doom and gloom.

OK WTF!

None of my Windows shortcuts seem to work. I press the windows key + x or c or any other key and the same thing happens o_O

When I'm in desktop mode, nothing happens...

That's odd. Win+x brings up a menu with search, file explorer, disk management etc. WIn+I brings up settings so I can jump to control panel or personalization. Win+c brings up the clock and the Metro settings menu to the right.

This is all from desktop mode. I have no idea why it would not work for you. I assume the obvious and you did a restart?

I had the same issue when I first installed W8 but it was as easy as finding that I had the Windows key disabled using a toggle on my keyboard (a Logitech gaming keyboard). I re-enabled it and was good to go. Might you have anything like this going on?

Just upgraded my work laptop from 7 pro to 8 pro x64. It's taking some getting used to but i'm actually really starting to like it.
My question to everyone is: anyone else with a laptop running very hot after upgrading to 8? My dell studio has a first gen i7 which has always run a little hot but i'm idling at almost 60*C on all 4 cores. right now i'm at 63/64* on all 4 cores with two tabs open, iheartradio app playing and that's about it. I just reinstalled all amd catalyst and drivers as I read somewhere that had helped for one user(and mine complained that it was not compatible immediately after upgrading so I uninstalled it).

Thanks
Luke

EDIT: forgot to mention about 6 months ago I opened it all up, replaced the paste with AS5 and cleaned out the fan and vents(though I wasn't 100% meticulous, just quickly blew out any major dust. I'm tempted to maybe repeat this work and see if there's a replacement fan that might be more efficient/quieter.
EDIT2: checked CPU clock with CPUz and the multiplier is changing dynamic based on load.

Does your windows 8 not exhibit this?

Create 2 user accounts.
Change the lockscreen on both accounts.
Now sign out of everything.

Are you saying that the lockscreen you see now, that you're sign out of every account is not the Seattle picture?

If so, I must be doing something wrong

Anyone try manipulating the start screen with a MC remote? it seems like it would be a pretty awesome TV experience.

You are correct, but I'll explain what I was seeing. I have W8 installed on the laptop, which both the wife and I use, so we both have our own login. Since it is a laptop, we both never logout, just shut the lid. When you open it back up, the last person who was using it gets their lock screen shown.

The only time I would ever see the lock screen with both user accounts signed out is if I fully restarted the OS, in which case it will still show the lock screen of the person who was logged in and initiated the shut down/restart.

It sounds like you either found a bug or this just isn't something Microsoft gave any thought to.

I had the same experience, finally remembered that I hadn't actually exited the apps I had been screwing around with, just closed them. They remain running in background. I had probably 18 apps running at one time. Haven't had a problem since I figured out ALT-F4 exits apps.

Thats likely the problem then, as I have a Logitech G19 keyboard. I'll test it as soon as I get home thanks

Do you remember what key it was that was the toggle?

*Edit* nevermind found it! Man, those shortcuts sure do make things easier :D

I started by upgrading my laptop to 8 to test how it is (I don't use it that much anyway). I believe I can get used to the tile screen in itself, that seems like a nice and powerful tool. I also like increased performance (start time especially), the new tools are great (task manager) and Skydrive's integration is working quite well (though slightly slow to upload/download documents, but that might be my laptop's fault). Overall, I'd say the underlying O/S is a nice increment to W7.

What bothers me the most about 8 so far is the doubling of applications and/or configuration. It just does not seem to serve any purpose on a desktop. Granted, I can pretty much remove all of the applications I do not want, or simply assign file types and actions to whichever application I prefer, but the configuration by default should still be better than it is at the moment.

I'm a bit scared to install W8 on my main computer; I have a dual monitor setup and I've heard some people complaining about their setup not working very well in 8.

What scares me the for Windows 8 though is that people, especially enterprises, will not switch to it. There's just no way. I work daily with all sorts of people, most of whom are very well educated, and they have issues working with Window XP/7's UI. That's an interface which has been mostly the same since 1995. I just don't see how a company would scrap all that and switch to something that is less intuitive.
