Focus? They shouldn't have to focus much work to get something running that they already had perfected in the playstation 3. That's something that should have been planned to be put in from the get-go. It shows a lack of foresight and a money grab to push their own music store.

The lack of DLNA / MP3 streaming is literally a make it or break it concern for me and I will not be buying a PS4 until they make that a feature.

OK and there are going to be millions of people buying them for games.

Nothing was perfected. The ps4 does not use the same os or any of the same software. You can't just drag and drop stuff over. I think you underestimate the difficulty of changing all the hardware and software.

this
also i read it wont play CDs as in audio CDs, which is BS if true, every DVD/BR drive has that ability by default. its no different than reading the audio off of a DVD or BR and pushing it out

sure CDs are slowly going away but its a standard feature on pmuch everything out there now.

the thing about streaming is a lot of people do it, i think a lot more than people realize. to many its essential. these people are not going to go build a HTPC to do it for them. Sure maybe the go and get a roku or apple TV or something else to do it but many want the all in 1, and the PS3 for the most part was that. stupid for the PS4 not to be

also im pretty sure the XOne will do it. as well as its mediacenter integration thing

Personally i use a DNLA server and a UPNP phone ap to push music through my receiver. but using PS3 Media Server + the PS3 works much better for video

No mp3 support is inexcusable. Period. Does this also imply there won't be, say, a Pandora app or other music apps either as a push for their own music unlimited service? Would they artificially restrict their web browser to not allow background music streaming that way? Or on the video side restrict Plex streaming via the web browser?

And no DLNA support is just plain bad. Don't get me wrong, I think DLNA sucks for the most part, and haven't had to deal with its limitations as I have an HTPC connected to my TV over hdmi, but that is a feature plenty of people use on PS3 and expected to be on PS4. IMO, Sony dropped a bit of a rotten egg of an 'ultimate faq' that has raised a lot of questions right before launch rather than clearing things up.

Shuhei Yoshida tweeted this last night
Thanks for the feedback to the lack of MP3 and DLNA support at the launch of PS4. I'll share with the PS4 Dev team for future consideration.

And today
Had a very good discussion w the PS4 Dev team today. We're happy & appreciative to learn so many people use and like PS3's media features.

Sony pulled an Xboner with this one. They didn't think anybody wanted to listen to their own music on their new console? Ooops. It's typical Sony to pull a last minute cockup like this. Did they just not want to pay the licensing fees, or did they honestly think that would push everyone to pay for Music Unlimited? Same thing with the audio CDs. I know a lot of people don't buy CDs, but there isn't a Bluray player in existence that doesn't support them.

Anyway, his tweets do seem somewhat promising. Might get these back in a future firmware. Unfortunately, that's what happens when corporate bureaucracy designs products. Groupthink is the quickest way to the worst ideas.

I don't understand people that use their systems to play music. Seems like a waste of a console and TV use.

I understand the benefit of a single device to do everything but at the same time I agree with you and think to myself that there are a hundred other devices that do that stuff.

Oh and did anyone think that they might want to keep being able to sell ps3s too? Sony never drops support for old systems right away.

It's definitely not, have your console hooked up to your home theater, want to listen to music while doing stuff around the house or when guests come over.

If I want to listen to music, I hook my iPhone or MP3 player into my speakers. And rarely I play it from my computer.

Just seems like a lot of work to listen to music. Turn on the system, turn on the TV and turn on receiver. Or just turn on my receiver. Less power used too.

I've never used the console to listen to music. I have speakers loud enough on my pc. But looks like they may add dlna back now if we all send our concerns.

Do we want 15 different boxes scattered around our damn TV's.

Assuming you want to play your music through a home theater (the only reason to care about mp3 playback), you've already got a PS3, a receiver, probably a HD cable box/dvr, center speaker, right speaker, left speaker, back speaker left, back speaker right, subwoofer, maybe a side right and side left, so that's how many boxes?

11?

What's one more?

It's so easy to forget that DLNA was added into the PS3 in a post launch patch. Just like DTS HD MA and 3d playback of blu-rays and games.

Right...I am excited for both the ps4 and xb1. I ha e devices that can do this stuff, one of which is a ps3. I expect that Sony wanted gaming related features taken care of first. Remember they got a lot of crap with the ps3 launch for having no games but focusing in media then the xb1 announcement had the same backlash. Aside from that I can potentially see Sony not wanting to hurt sales of other products they have as well, including the ps3.

why does it bother people so much that others use their consoles differently than they do? holy shit, give it a rest. some people want the feature because they use it, some don't care about it because they don't use it. why is this fucking rocket science to some of you?

Haven't you been paying attention! Extra features to use your console differently are only good when Sony adds them. When MS adds them, they are trying to kill gaming.

I don't recall people complaining when MS said they would be taking that stuff back and allowing used games, people complained because they advertised it the way they did and until all the uproar they reverted. But I recently found out about no dlna a couple days ago. I don't recall Sony saying from the beginning it would not be available. Both companies will use misinformation or no information to their advantage.

Some people need their eyes opened to other / better ways to do things. Has nothing to do with being bothered. Why do you assume this is difficult for anyone?

Seriously? People still complain because "MS is likely to patch that stuff back in and steal all our money and games and kick our dog!" People were raging MS focused their presentations on things the Xbox One could do besides gaming (because anyone with half a brain knew it would play games). Sony announces they will have indie games and everyone lauds them as some savior to gaming (despite their being indie games on every platform that allows applications to be run).

The real issue is people feel the need to take an either / or stance. They can't acknowledge both are capable and can do different things. But, considering the VC&G subforum, I am not surprised.

I don't think they will patch it to take the stuff away. They may make changes we may not like or want but it won't be drastic. As of now neither new console supports dlna. For xb1 it's unknown still.

Damn, that sucks. I used it a fair amount back when I had my PS3. Not going to change my order, since I was planning on doing a proper HTPC at some point anyway, but it would be nice if they brought the feature back since it was a quick and easy way to stream stuff through.
