The lack of DNLA will most likely cancel my preorder. I really just wanted the PS4 to replace my PS3, which does DNLA, Youtube, Amazon, Netflix, etc. Might as well just keep the PS3, or buy a slim version to deal with the noise. Any future PS4 games I was thinking about playing like Naughty Dog games I guess I can just watch on Youtube. I will wait a week or two to see if they change their stance on this.

Yeah, the killing of DNLA doesn't really make sense to me. The PS3 was great because it could function as a complete media device; it was like an HTPC that happened to play games. Might as well go with a dedicated HTPC this time around barring some killer exclusives (a proper Gran Turismo / Forza sim racing game on the PC might seal the deal for me, and Project CARS is looking pretty damn good at this point). Everything else is going multi-platform, so without a nifty feature like "run every piece of media you own through this box," what's the point?

I don't understand why they took that away. Deff a negative because I could sit at my tv and browse through my document folder for all types of media. Does anyone know if xb1 supports this? I'm sure someone will write an app later to make it support it. Or a jailbreak but who knows.

I'm really debating just saving my money now and not getting a system at all.

That's what I'm doing. In fairness, it's as much because I'm trying to save up for a house, and a new console is an unnecessary luxury, but new consoles don't usually offer anything all that enticing for the first year or so anyway (exceptions for the blu-ray player on the PS3 and Super Mario 64 on the N64).

Yeah a house is a much better buy. You will need to pay taxes, buy appliances, lots of other things. To be honest all I've been doing with my ps3 lately besides playing gta v is streaming shows and movies from my computer. I've used it pretty much every night for that. If I didn't need cable for my gf that's all I would do with it when I didn't have games left to play.

It may cause me to jump to the Xbox if that supports it. Then I'll be keeping the ps3. But I don't think Xbox supports it either. Out of all the things these new all in one consoles" do the most useful things get taken away. It's because Sony will be having deals with the networks to bring content via their own media servers which of course will have some type of subscription like Netflix.

Microsoft also has their own media services. On the 360 Netflix is only available in 720p but you can rent movies from Microsoft store in 1080p.

It seems to me that Sony wants this to be viewed as a gaming console first. Keep your PS3 for media functionality. Your PS3 is not broken because the PS4 comes out. I guess if you only want one thing hooked up but think about Sony's position here. After all Sony has done to express that they are trying to focus on gamers and developers and make the console great for both parties and said almost nothing about media stuff should have been a huge indicator about the focus.

Not only that but Sony as a company is hurting. Playstation is almost the only profitable brand they have at this point. Having the PS4 cross over into markets that they have other products for would hurt sales of those other products.

Does Sony even have a streaming box like a Roku or an AppleTV? I don't think they do. I'm guessing their TVs have streaming capability, but that's a bit different.

They had a streaming network box (SMP-Nx00 line), but in typical Sony fashion they limited its functionality and no one bought it. I was looking at it, but it probably didn't play mkv via DNLA or something. Now they just do it with their blu ray players.

Their tv's do have built in apps and WiFi support but they don't sell as well as Samsung and LG, Vizio..also being a brand of Sony I think. I remember having a Sony desktop in high school, built like a rock and lasted well over 5 years. My dad was still using it I believe up until two years ago. They used to have some good products so yea the PlayStation brand is what is helping them most.

I also like their laptops but they too are on the pricey side. It won't be too much of a hassle to unplug the ps4 and plug in the ps3 to stream from the pc but I know in the coming months they will have some games I'll definately want to play.

I'm really interested in that CIA game they have coming. Reminded me of heavy rain but with lots more action.

Sony lost their display advantage when LCDs replaced tubes. Then they messed up their other markets by constantly trying to vendor lock in everything with over priced proprietary media. And still haven't learned that lesson with Vita. Why aren't people buying Vitas? $100 memory cards that should only cost $20 is probably a large factor.

It's worth noting that this functionality can be added in later if they choose.

Sony has streaming boxes but as was said they didn't sell well. On a similar topic I remember asking once if anyone heard anything about the Blu-Ray playback capabilities of the PS4 and Xb1 and nobody knew. There's still no info about this. I assume they both function similarly to a PS3, but there's no word. There was almost no info about any media functions for either console beyond the initial TV info MS gave us. I think the focus has shifted so the spotlight is on the games.

And yet the majority of launch games are the same types of titles that launched on the PS3 and 360 lol. Why is it the launch games for the past 6 system launches is always the same: COD, NFL, NBA, Dance, Tony Hawk, Wheel of Fortune, Sponge Bob, etc. are guaranteed to be launch titles for nearly every system. Even Nintendo which is sad. They always had some of their main titles on launch up until the GameCube.

Almost as annoying as retro game hunting and coming across a DS lot but its two dozen games of Hanna Montana, Scooby Doo, etc. Or seeing NES/SNES games where all the sports games are 10 cents and the one Mario game is $30 lol.

Their faq site says blu ray will be playable with the 1.5 update we have to install at launch. If one chooses Sony can ship an install disk to someone that doesn't want to connect to the internet too. With all the focus on games I'm hoping they have something good in mind. Especially with the Indy games but I hope that's not what their main focus will be. I don't ever remember trying anything but plants vs zombies.

Yeah so it's probably going to be exactly like PS3 which is fine as it's fully featured. I'll need to see if Logitech will make Harmony remote adapters for these systems as I doubt either of them have an IR port. At least I didn't see that.

I don't see anything about IR, just a port for the camera. I'm interested in the Ds4 integrated speaker and how it will be used in games. Looks like in killzone player diaries will be voiced through the speaker which is cool because I didn't like going in a menu and hearing ir through the tv. Same with touch pad, looks like it will be used as a visual reference to select certain game items/commands.

I'm not cancelling my pre-order but looks like my PS4 still has it's coveted spot above my TV. Seems to have quite a few unreasonable limitations in the media sphere. I get the feeling they're doing this to push their online services, which probably aren't doing so hot.

I'm hoping through a patch they can enable the streaming. On my ps3 once I installed windows 8.1 it nicely recognized my ps3 as a server which is cool. Or at least some third party apps can enable it? It's a powerful console and I don't think it would be forever limited from this.

If I had to guess, it's probably an issue of feature worth vs. time. Sony did state that some features would not be available at launch -- even with the 1.50 patch. For example, suspend and resume will not be available at launch. So, there's a chance that Sony decided to push back DLNA to focus on gaming-oriented tasks. Now, you may say, "But they're adding disc-based playback!" Yeah, if I had to bet, I would say that disc-based playback is more popular than network-based. :p The most use my PS3 gets is as a Blu-Ray player!

No DLNA. Can't even play mp3s. Requires day 1 patch to play blurays. Lol.

What a joke

The Xbox also requires a day one download. I'm not sure what exactly it's features are that are not available at launch but it seems to be the norm now.

Looks like the games that are 50gb won't eat up all your hdd since data will be cached as you play, and removed when it's not needed. What's interesting is when the cache will be cleared, when you put in another game ?

Their music service is said to be a free subscription so I wonder what format they use to playback.

I'm not aware of the x1 needed a day one patch to enable major functionality like this. Care to provide a link?

Not having major features like Blurays playback available at launch is a HUGE omission IMHO. If MSFT did this you would be reaming them and you know it. The fact is Sony's software execution has always been inferior. I have no confidence that they can deliver a next-gen software experience and I'm not surprised they had to cut so many basic features from launch. Obviously the hardware is top notch and can deliver great graphics but that is NOT what is going to win this next generation of console wars.

Next-gen is going to be all about integration. Right now MSFT has way more to offer me than Sony. It is the only box on the planet that can truly replace every device in my home and provide an experience that outclasses or matches them all.

It was announced a while ago that the Xbone REQUIRES a day one patch. The PS4 at least doesn't require you to patch the system to be able to play games. HUGE difference between the two.
