Developers would also duplicate data on the discs to help speed up disc access. The Killzone Shadow Fall developers said that their original PS4 disc was 250GB because of all the duplication that they did for optimization purposes. Apparently, they were able to work it down considerably to get it to sub-50GB levels.

Oh, and more importantly... does the DualShock 4 charge from things other than a PC (and eventually the PS4)?

They have charging stations if that's what you mean? I have no way to check the battery status so I couldn't help you answer this until I have my PS4 so I can see the battery level.

here's an interesting article that puts some things into perspective. i think it's amusing looking at that article and then reading how people are saying that this new upcoming gen is barely a step up from the current gen.

It's the same sort of people who claimed they couldn't tell the difference between SD and HDTV. All you have to do is compare current console releases with their PC versions running at full 1080p on high detail. Big difference in a lot of games like the Bioshock series, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed, etc.

Also people who say upscaled DVD is the same as blu-ray.

Well, a lot of people claim to be able to tell the difference between 720p and 1080p and that is just BS. If they aren't side by side, you will have a hard time telling the difference between TVs. Unless they are like 50"+

well many of the people making these claims that it's not much of a step up are people on this forum, and most people on this forum aren't technically challenged.

it's VERY easy for me to tell the difference between 720p and 1080p.

that said, it doesn't mean 720p looks bad by any means. it still looks great.

Same TV with same settings aside from reaolution and same source? Someone may be able to pick out the 1080p one. Not everyone though. It's like audio, not everyone can hear the difference (see in the case of TV).

That said, when you go from SD to HD you can tell the difference immediately.

This. I think you and I are watching on very large screens though, so the differences would be easier to see.

I watched an upscaled DVD of Christine that looked fantastic the other day, but it was very obvious that is was not 1080p.

I have a 51" Samsung and a 60" Panasonic Plasma, both 1080p. From the couch I can easily see the difference between 720p and 1080p. I don't hate 720p, but 1080p is the preference when available of course. It's particularly noticeable with CG stuff like Pixar films and games from the HTPC. Occasionally I'll install a game, fire it up, and immediately tell that it's not running 1080p, go to check, yep .. 720p, ugh. Fix resolution, boom perfect.

Yeah, definitely more noticeable on certain things. Probably depends on the transfer too. On my ~100"+ screen though, it can be seen quite easily.

Boy I really need to get an HTPC going. I feel like I'm in the dark ages compared to most of you guys. ^_^

Hahah yeah I had the early BR release of Gladiator, it was terribad. Thankfully they re-released it and I re-bought it 😀 I read reviews before buying titles now haha.

Yes, very important! Gangs of New York, Patton, etc...

Is there an announced release date for it? Haven't been following...

no clue, really don't have any interest in yearly racing games by ea sports anymore. nfs has looked the same for years now.

EDIT:

gamestop shows it on 11/22 for both consoles and amazon has it at 12/31 so who knows.

I ended up sending the disk in for the free swap.

But anyhow it is possible to tell the difference in some circumstances but I don't know that I could say a game looks outright bad if it isn't at whatever resolution someone holds up as the gold standard.

The release dates for this game are conflicting. It says the Xbox 360 / PS3 version releases on the 19th, but the PS4 version on the 15th and the Xbox One version on the 22nd. Perhaps, they all were pushed back to the same date?

This is one of EA's talked about Frostbite 3 games, so maybe they are trying to get Mantle baked in to the PC release before all versions come out? I always was on the stance, this game wouldn't get Mantle support due to it being released in Nov.

So.. what game is everyone buying with their PS4s? I need to pick up something but no idea what. I'm waiting for reviews of Killzone and Knack before plunging. Not really into CoD or Battlefield either. I wish I could upgrade my PS3 Madden 25 copy to the PS4 one without taking a huge hit..

Well, when I do get a PS4, I'll be looking at Watch Dogs.

FIFA 14 right away, then Knack once it comes out, whenever that is.
