At least Samsung are brave and try new form factors and Ideas. Galaxy Camera? Galaxy Note? Galaxy Tab 7 instead of 10, a flip phone (lol) and now a curved phone and soon bendable phones?

Yeah, you may argue they copy colours but so what? It's a colour and there have been a ton of gold phones before. The iPhone wasn't first. But Samsung do a lot more interesting things than anyone else including apple. They Experiment with new form factors. They deserve credit for that.

I cannot wait for bendable display so I can carry my tablet in my pocket.

I was expecting that. One would assume that if gold-colored (whatever we might think of it regardless) being such a big seller in some Asian markets is fairly well known, it would be surprising for Samsung not to have ever offered any previously.

I think the point is that Samsung is cashing in on Apple's gold iphone when it turned out to be a popular color. Where was gold when they released brown and red?

If I was at home, I'd photoshop this pic with him holding the phone.

funny anyone would try to pretend Apple is the pioneer of gold phones....

Well they did seem to pioneer the gold phone people actually want. I've seen about 3 dozen gold iPhone 5s's in the wild, and it just came out a few days ago. On the flip I've never seen a single gold Samsung phone in the wild.

Don't think it's a fluke that Apple already not being able to keep the gold iPhone 5s in stock anywhere will result in seeing other gold phones for sale in the US very soon. Samsung having a gold S4's laughable, gold colored plastic's about 10x more tacky than the already borderline tacky gold iPhone 5s

This is true, but it's equally true that Samsung loves to copy Apple.
I'm not saying they needed to for a gold phone, as it could just be timing or us paying more attention because of Apple's 5c, but it's not out of the realm of possibility.

In any case, there's nothing wrong with gold as a color, it's just flashy and attention-grabbing. It's not terrible when it's used more subtly, but it usually looks tacky when used on anything but jewelry... or in electronic components. Some people just like the color, but in the case of the 5s, you just know a good portion of the buyers want people to notice they have a new phone. Nothing wrong with that, it's akin to buying a sports car in red. I prefer less flashy colors myself, though. I'm not a fan of gold phones any more than I am a fan of gold sneakers.

Don't you think the popularity of the gold iphone has more to do with having an easily recognizable latest and greatest iphone? The new one is the only gold one, so people can see your status symbol from across the room. Couple that with it being the ONLY outward change for the new model, and i think you've got your reasons. Honestly, if apple had released the 5s in almost ANY new, neutral color, it would have sold more than the black and whites too (and probably even the gold one since it's ghetto fabulous).

Also, I agree that the gold s4 is a troll by samsung- those promos are 2nd year GD student tacky.

I think there's several factors:

1) As you said, since Gold is only available on the 5S, it helps show off that you have the newest iPhone. I'm curious if they retain gold for the iPhone 6, will sales be roughly the same? Or will it drop now? If they introduced an ugly alternative like purple, would just as many people make a run for it?

2) The iPhone crowd tends to be younger, and so the bling factor of gold is semi-attractive. I can see plenty of teenage girls going for it as well as the women in the OC. I know quite a few guy friends who went for gold too.

3) White and black are getting old. People wanted something new.

4) Possible artificial limited supply by Apple.

Samsung says the gold S4 preceded the gold iPhone by 2 days: ‘Golden’ History of Samsung Phones

About a month ago on August 27th, Samsung launched the GALAXY S4 Gold edition in the United Arab Emirates (These were available in stores starting September 8th). It’s since also been released in Kuwait and Qatar.

Everybody loves gold, which is why we sometimes make phones in that color. (Or sometimes even with actual gold for the body!) See below to check out some of the phones we’ve released in gold in the past (just off the top of my head).

في 8 سبتمبر 2013 ، كان أول هاتف Samsung GalaxyS4 من النسخة الذهبية موجوداً في محلات البيع. 8 يأتي قبل 10

On 8th September 2013, the first Samsung #GalaxyS4 Gold Edition was already available in stores. The 8th comes before the 10th ;)

No doubt. Samsung "researchers" were probably "researching" on the internet and came upon the Apple rumors about watches and gold iPhones...

Or maybe they just released a gold version of their phone where other gold versions of their previous phones sold well?

Doubt it. The GS4 came out in May or June. Between then and now they've come out with different variations of the GS4. It must've been a hell of a coincidence that this gold GS4 came out so close to Apple's iPhone debut.

So you're saying that Apple copied Samsung's gold S4? They didn't have much time.

If you re-read what I wrote about samsung "researchers" you will understand...

You think when they found those rumours they were all "Ohh thats a bit of a coincidence" or do you think they were pissed at Apple copying them?

I think they were "oh, if Apple does it we get free R&D and/or free marketing. We'll just keep doing what they do but more discreetly this time. What's not to like?"
