$1.25 for an 8oz beverage? How is this in any way better than just buying a 12oz can?

The only good soda from a can is Throwback Pepsi, otherwise the can seems to mess up the taste.

I can almost understand the draw of Kold if you are getting a good fountain product, but this is still way too spendy.

I can see how this would save the companies billions in distribution while increasing profits crazy high. Its a good gamble for them and I must admit it is an elegant product. I would love to taste it to compare. If somehow it produced a better taste or if perhaps you could control the sugar content, with a lower price after the first push, I could see it making market share.

I buy soda for $2.50 a 12 pack on sale, way cheaper.

Whenever you Yanks talk about the price of food, I keep thinking "I really should just move to the States". Might get a 12 packs have been pushing $6 here regular price, even before the Dollar went in the crapper.

a guy at work bought a used soda machines for less than this. the only problem he had was sourcing the mix for the machine because pepsi wouldn't sell it to him.

Back when I thought about planning a home theater, I was reading up on actual soda machines ... And you have to keep ice in the machine, and have to cleanup the nozzles every day you use it ... It seemed like too much work

And it's difficult to source a machine since most are leased

^ and that's why the Kold almost sounded like a nice idea. But it would have to be priced closer to $1.5/32oz

You don't have to keep ice in the machines. They usually use a direct water line feed. They also normally have lines running out to where you want to put the syrup.

I thought the ice kept the plate (at the base of the ice bin) cold, and the water and syrup ran through that plate to dispense cold soda.

It's miserable to get soda at a store in a machine that is out of ice. Warm soda melts your ice faster, and then you get watered down, kinda flat soda.

I suppose you could plan for warm soda and set a strong mix that you intend to be watered down.

Ya know, those Coke Freestyle machines can get messy. I've been splattered by the cherry flavoring goo that they use a few times when I made myself a diet Cherry Coke. That shit stains, yo!

And they need regular cleaning.

Heard from someone that worked in a fast food joint that said their drink fountain never really got cleaned, and at one point they had to take it apart and it was full of mold in it.

Would be more hassle than it's worth to have that at home really. I guess if you entertain a lot it could be cool but even then.

tangent: i am glad canadians also say "pop", which is the correct word, instead of "soda" or "coke" (shudder) like the coasts or the south do.

This isn't up for debate: pop comes from soda-pop, not the other way around. Soda or soda-pop may be used, as well as soft-drink. Pop is a sound, not a thing.

:hmm:

I don't know. No idea how they actually work in the inside. I figured a cold water line would actually be plenty, and you could just add the ice to a cup yourself from a freezer before you pour.

let's consult wikipedia about this:

wikipedia said:
Schloss gives the following years as the first attestations of the following terms for such beverages:

Year Term
1798 Soda water
1809 Ginger pop
1812 Pop
1863 Soda pop
1880 Soft drink
1909 Coke
1920 Cola
1939 Bubble tonic
1951 Fizz-wa

so the word "pop" was used 50 years before "soda pop", and almost 70 years before "soft drink"?

looks like your etymology derivation hypothesis has been disproven

Hmm, a dose of history that I had not known.

As usual, Ohio is right about everything. We are the Heartland, we are the decidedly average folk against whom all others are judged. :colbert:

I think it's an over priced piece of shit. Isn't there another soda maker out there? Could have sworn I seen an infomercial on one.

Yeah, the Sodastream. That requires CO2 canisters, though, and it doesn't sell name brand soda mixes.

I like fizz-wa. I'm bringing that baby back.

I'm disappointed... I came here hoping for a classic lxskllr "closed source software and DRM are evil" type post and didn't get it :(

Seriously, though... I wonder what kind of DRM they are going to use on these soda pods to attempt to "prevent" cheap knock off pods, and how quickly we'll find a way to bypass it :)
