never seen the tv show, got dragged to the movie by my GF.

it's lame. the acting sucks, the story sucks (100% predictable), the one-liners can barely muster a groan. the action is ok, but still totally incapable of making me the least bit interested in what happens.

official worst movie I've seen all year. it's worse than fantastic four.

I want to see this so bad, but I don't want to ruin my expectations! Damnit, why did they have to make a movie!

Awesome movie. Felt like a season finale episode. I understand that since it was a feature length film there wasn't much room for the 'downtime' which made Firefly so enjoyable. Nevertheless the crew banter was great. Man I wish they'd start up the series but I'd be somewhat content with another movie or two. Watching it, I was so glad to be watching the actors back in their rolls, after the fact I wish they could have left more mystery to the Reavers and River, but all in all I was satisfied.

Spoiler about actors.

And about wash and book, i think the actors were reluctant about continuing the series/movies so they kind of had to kill them off

Are you f'ing kidding me. That movie was great. And I have never scene the show. 3 of my friends went to see it with me, none have seen the show, and all of them loved the movie and want to watch the show now.

The genre of the movie is definitely based on a Western theme with a Sci-Fi twist, so one liners are a given in this type of movie. It isn't supposed to be Shakespeare, with alot of melodrama. If you wanted to see something like that, turn in your man card and watch the English Patient. ;) If you wanted more action, (which any more than that would have been superfluous) then watch something stupid like Transporter 2. The action was just enough to add to the storyline, not over the top.

I would give a 8.5/10, and only because I probably would have enjoyed it more if I had watched Firefly before and you could tell it was definitely tribute movie.

I am definitely going to watch Firefly now. Hopefully, this movie will make FOX reconsider its policies with great shows.

In regards to what happens after this movie, the contract was inked years ago to make a trilogy, though the first one has to do reasonably well. It is stipulated in the contract that there will be no revival of the show on television before the movies are all made, but if they saw a way to make more money doing that than a full trilogy I am sure Universal might be amenable to change.

Of course, they could always do a spin-off like Angel was to Buffy. I wouldn't mind seeing a series documenting the war between the Alliance and the Browncoats that also happened to star some of the same characters. :)

I'm surprised by some of the responses here, but I did like the movie. I hope it does well, because I think writing like this could make a good sequel. I hate myself for talking about a sequel, but it would be nice.

:disgust:

I like a good dumb, fun action movie as much as anybody. This one just wasn't any good. one liners are fine, just don't make them of the lameass 10 year old variety. I at least expect that the story is creative enough and the characters interesting enough that I'd be bothered if they all just died suddenly. I wouldn't have been. every "stressfull" crash landing or escape sequence, I wasn't into it - I just didn't care. the movie might as well have been made-for-TV.

you honestly want to tell me the acting in that was good? the doctor? the horny mechanic girl? the f'ing captain? none of them could even pull off the lame characters they were given, much less make them interesting.

I meant that the quality of the action was ok...the effects were passable...it's just everything else that wasn't.

"The science-fiction tale "Serenity," a continuation of writer-director Joss Whedon's cult TV series "Firefly," debuted in second place with $10.1 million, according to studio estimates Sunday."

Is $10.1M good or bad!?! how much did it cost to make the movie?

It's kinda weak, but i think due to word of mouth, it may continue to post good numbers for longer.

Heh, smart decision. Although the first one wasn't totally awful. It's good up until the point in the movie where you realize he's no longer the Transporter and now he's the Asswhupper. Transporter was pretty enjoyable if you could just sorta...dull...your higher brain functions. Transporter 2 required a full lobotomy, and I ain't going through that for my movie enjoyment.

I'm still shocked someone with at least a shred of taste couldn't have liked Firefly. I figured the only people who wouldn't get it were the people who couldn't follow the plot or didn't have a sense of humor.

40mil to make, ~80mil is required to get a trilogy. So yes, this is weak.

If it only cost 40 mil to make why would it need to make 80 to ensure sequels? If it makes even 40 mil in the theaters (which it should). The DVD sales (and it will make alot on those) will make up for any of the marketing costs.

I took my oldest boy to see the movie on Saturday as a reward for getting honor roll. We both liked the movie a lot and neither of us saw any of the series on TV.

I liked how the science fiction was almost plausible unlike the science magic we get offered in other sci fi movies.

I didn't really like Serenity that much. I've watched Firefly and enjoyed it, but I'm not one of the rabid fanboy types. However, for some reason I felt that the movie was worse than the TV series.

I know I might get beat down for this, but the last 3 movies didn't do much for me.

Personally, I think Lucas had the right idea when he had someone else direct Episodes 5 and 6. For 1, 2, and 3, he should've outsourced the dialog to someone who knows how to write interesting characters, and outsourced the directing to someone who payed attention in film school.

But that's me.

to convince the financers to take a second risk when the first wasn't very profitable? sequels always cost more. and the 40 million is simply an estimate, budgets are secrets, studios release such figures as marketing(accounting tricks make numbers very pliable anyways), and in this case to keep expectations down i bet. who knows. lets just say sith opened to 108 million and jodies movie on its second week still beat serenity by 50% even with the firefly geek turnout.

Just saw the movie yesterday and enjoyed it immensely. I laughed, I cried... :p

The movie cleared up quite a few things but it still didn't really go into Book's past (and why he had an Alliance security clearance).

Questions though (POSSIBLE SPOILERS!!! STOP READING HERE IF YOU DON"T WANT TO KNOW!)

How do the reavers continue to exist if they were created from a violent reaction to the Pax gas? Wouldn't all the radiation from their ships' cores have killed them all off over time? This is asked, of course, on the premise that reavers don't reproduce through the traditional means. Also, if the majority of the reaver fleet engaged the Alliance ships and the Alliance came out victorious, does that mean that the reavers, for the most part, now cease to exist?

Another stupid/geeky question - how does Mal know to act like he's paralyzed by the Alliance assassin's blow? Is he a more skilled fighter than I give him credit for? :p

No your actually right on the ball. Lucas is a great man...has great visions, stories and loves special effects...but goddamn he cant direct

1) In the series we encounter at least one reaver who came from a regular crew attacked by reavers and who was driven insane by the experience.

2)I don't know... there's probably some explanation for this... maybe something to do with how they use EPS conduits... :p

3) They probably ran off when the fight went badly and there's enough left to continue harrying... but yeah, I'd guess most are gone

4) He's more skilled than you give him credit for... he says "That nerve cluster was torn out", which implies he knows what it's for...
