in a dfi ultra-d thread someone mentioned that zalman hooked them up with a backplate for his older model 7000- so i think you'll be ok

I grew impatient waiting for an email, so I called Zalman's California branch just a little while ago. They took down my name, address, and email and said they'd ship out to me a backplate and an alternative set of nipples. Jawesome.

Did you give AMD's CPUInfo a try to see if it could properly ID the Sempy? What about everest? Just curious if they show something different for you.

Just tried everest, and it says my CPU is a Winchester 754. lol.

Nice article on Sempron 2600 (754) at XBit Labs

53% Overclock 😀

If I get my backplate in tomorrow, I'll beat Xbit labs for sure.

😀

These chips are definitely awesome, though.

*Edit*
Xbit labs says these chips are of the D0 core.
I was under the assumption it was from the E0 core with SOI.
Maybe I was wrong. Can anyone find anymore info?
I'd like to find out.

They also didn't state what PSU they used, or at least I didn't see it mentioned. That's probably one of the most important pieces of your hardware. Very cool that the L2 cache matters so little. I'm still kind of glad I got a 256KB L2 cache chip for an extra $10. I had the money to spare, and it would ensure I got a few more FPS in games.

*Edit #2*
Well, I went back to digit life, and checked the AMD road map. They both say Palermo is made with SOI, and even Xbit claims these are the Palermo cores, to which I have no doubt, so these should be SOI chips, like I had thought.

If I get one I think I will go with the 3000+ to have a 9X multiplier, this way I would not need to get a DFI board with the high fsb capability.

I figure I'll get it this Tuesday, unless they sent the piece express mail. I'm working on an assembly code project Monday (hmm, that'd be today now wouldn't it) that would prevent me from taking the time to install the DFI Monday anyway. Tuesday it shall be.

How bout that 3300+ with a 12 multiplier...WOOT

What about it?
You have to buy a $700 HP to get it.
This thread is mostly to explore the cost benefits of taking the overclocked s754 sempy route, as well as see if SOI has allowed AMD chips the headroom to stretch beyond the norm.

They will and they will be quite the nice little CPU

There is a possibility. The AMD roadmap does indicate that higher clocked semprons will be coming out for socket 754 eventually. The first thing we need to see, though, is a sempron with a 10x multiplier first. Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves 😛
I'm probably going to purchase a 3100+ Palermo when it drops under $100.
These chips are just awesome.

The sempron is the palermo core a derivative of the winchester so I can see how it was possibly read as a winchester sckt 754!! LOL

41s in 1mb of superpi?? is that at 2.4ghz??? NOt bad I hit 30s at 2.65ghz finally...I hit 29c at an unstable speed of 2.7ghz....

So I install the DFI at noon like I planned. I get everything hooked up, and I power on. The system hangs on the DFI lanparty logo screen. Great. I took the system apart again, made sure everything was seated properly, and tried again. Hangs. I took the computer apart once more, and took off everything that was not vital:

My two hard drives, my two burners, and my floppy. So now it's just the video card and the motherboard. I power up, and the system hangs on the logo screen. That's just fvcking fantastic! I've waited over a week to get this stupid motherboard installed, and the damn thing appears to be DOA! Not only that, but it took me an hour to do the motherboard install! While AT and other review sites may praise the layout of the board, it wrecked havoc for my small case. I had to reinstall my hard drives into different locations so that my video card could fit without bumping into the IDE cables, which btw, made a horrible mess all clumped together on the right edge of the board. I was also having an extraordinaly difficult time routing my primary IDE cable to my HDs, because it was to the left of my video card, so I had to find a way to snake it over that so I could plug both ends into my drives. Plus, the ATX cable had no room in there between all the freaking IDE cables. I am so freaking pissed. My only option is to waste MORE time to fiddle with the board again, and then RMA it, causing another week and a half's worth of delays.

I'd ship it back to Newegg, but they don't accept motherboard RMAs anymore.
I don't know how slow/fast DFI will be about this.

Well...I'm glad I decided to play with it again. I figured I'd play musical chairs with the memory before I RMA'd, and sure enough, when I didn't use DIMM slot #3, the board boots. Nothing like having a bad DIMM slot!

I am so relieved. I didn't want to have to deal with an RMA and reinstall my Epox again. I'm going to go plug back in my HDDs and my opticals, and see if I can't get it running now.

DFI says I'm idling at 43C @ stock 1.6ghz!
Seems like it's reporting high. Anyway...the overclocking commences.

I got tired of waiting for you Avalon 😉

Just got myself a 3000+ and will be installing shortly but first suppertime. 🙂

what are you doing?? just posting in windows or runing some benches???

Run some superpi32 and let see what 2.7ghz does on a sempron machine with 256kb of cache and SC controller...heck run the 1mb one if it is easier...
