Sexuality isn't binary, it's a spectrum. A person's physical gender can be male/female/both or in extremely rare cases neither. For a person to be non-conflicted their physical gender must be in sync with their gender identity and sexual orientation. In Ms. Klug's case we have incomplete info: the KBMT story refers to him as transgender which means he's either in the process of getting SRS (taking hormones) or has already completed it. From a Facebook page another poster quoted it would seem Ms. Klug is a cross-dresser.

Wrong. Gender isn't a spectrum:
Non-Binary Genders are gender identities that don't fit within the accepted binary of male and female. People can feel they are both, neither, or some mixture thereof. It might be easier to view gender as a 1-dimensional spectrum with male on one end, female on the other, and androgyne in the middle- but the reality is that gender is more complex, and 3-dimensional models with axes for male, female, and how strongly you feel attached to that gender identity have been suggested.

If wanting to cut off your penis isn't a sign of mental illness how can we legitimately call anything a mental illness?

People are quick to blame bias against transgender people for their high suicide rates, but I disagree.

If bias raises the suicide rate of a certain demographic, blacks and other minorities should have a much higher suicide rate than white men. If bias truly drives suicide rates, muslims should have been killing themselves by the droves after 9/11.

Transgender is a mental illness. Suicide is a byproduct of that mental illness.

A lot of other groups have higher suicide rates than the general population.

Did you bother asking yourself why their suicide rates might be higher? Of course not, your mind was probably made up before you found the article. Bullied as children and teens, ostracized by society for conditions of their bodies and minds over which they had/have no control.

Assuming they make it through that, to then make the decision to bring into sync their physical gender and gender identity so that they may live as a whole person. And you answer, "...herp mental illness, derp..., ...herp can't accommodate, derp..., ...herp won't tolerate derp...?

You, and an unfortunately significant amount of people, have got some fucked up thinking.

She's transgender and she has an addiction. Neither of which fit the definition of mental illness.

She believes that she has chosen the correct gender, with which she functions in societal and personal relationships.
