Interchangeable phrases and/or similarities do not a psychological diagnosis make.

Not just phrase, but also actions.

Lets do multiple choice.

Phrase - "I was born in the wrong body"

Proposed solution:

A. Cut leg off so I can be an amputee.

B. Cut penis off so I can be a woman.

Which one is mentally ill?

Sorry, I do not subscribe to your simplistic black/white, either/or view of the world.

Was (s)he not a member of the union?

I do not know.

Our politically correct society says we have to excuse certain sexual behavior as being normal.

If that same behavior was exhibited outside of a sexual nature it would be condemned.

If tying your leg and acting like an amputee is a form of mental illness, then so is dressing up and acting like the opposite sex.

If you listen to what a lot of transgender people say, and then compare it to what people who have been diagnosed with other mental disorders say, the phrases are interchangeable.

This phrase for example - "Born into the wrong body."

If a transgender says it, that term is not a sign of mental illness.

But if someone with body integrity identity disorder says that exact same phrase, they are mentally ill.

Pretend to be a woman, no mental illness.

Pretend to be an amputee, mental illness.

How can we excuse one behavior as being natural, but when someone does something very similar they are mentally ill and need help.

If you listen to what a lot of anti marriage equality, it is the same / similar to those that were anti racial equality. The phrases are interchangeable.

Deny rights based on race, bigot.

Deny rights based on sexual preference, not bigot.

I do not know.

Hint: "normal" is a subjective term.

You are somewhat right and I somewhat agree with you.

However, race is not a choice, sexual preference is.

Why should society accommodate a perverted lifestyle?

Doctors disagree with your assertion that sexual preference is a choice, and as you have absolutely no training in neurobiology, your uneducated opinion on the matter is essentially worthless.

So is yours.

Fair enough. So let's skip right past our uneducated opinions and go with what the doctors say; human sexuality is neither a binary opposition nor a conscious choice. Neither one of us has the credentials to refute the accepted medical wisdom on the subject, so we're forced to accept it.

Remind me again how many times doctors and scientific studies have been wrong?

Scientist can not even agree on global warming, but they can agree on sex?

More like they have a theory on sex. And every time the wind blows the theory will change.

I agree! We should stop accommodating the ignorance spewed by people who think a book written 2,000 years ago trumps science. .

You are not playing nice.

Please quote when I referenced religion.

Too late; we've already agreed our own opinions on the matter are worthless given our complete lack of training in any areas applicable to neuroscience. However, if you do decide to pursue an education or career in neuroscience to help solve this medical dilemma once and for all, the world could be a better place for it. Something to consider.

I think you need to reread those global warming studies. Science is in agreement that is happening, they only disagree with how much, if any, humans are increasing the speed at which it occurs.

Furthermore, nice argument "scientists are sometimes wrong, so they are always wrong".

You are not playing nice.

I never said you did. Simply that we should stop accommodating, as a society, willful ignorance, especially such that leads to discrimination and hatred.

So now that we're hearing cross dressers should be a protected class, because it's not an action, it's how they were born.

As the leftists around here have become fond of saying, conservatism is a genetic defect. Does that mean that firing someone for donating to a right wing cause - something that they can't change if their genes make them conservative - makes you a bigot?

:hmm:

So when do we stop accommodating cross dressers?

Never. Who gets to determine what clothing is acceptable for each gender? And why is it perfectly acceptable for a women to wear men's clothing and not the other way around? If a teacher had worn Wranglers, work boots, and a t-shirt nobody would be causing a fuss, regardless of which gender she identified with. Same with if she had worn a suit.

It's useless to try to educate bigots. Citing the statements of authoritative bodies is lost on these know-nothings. They lack all ability to understand nuance. To them, it is impossible that a completely sane person born with a penis can think and feel and self-identify as a woman.

But let's try:

Imagine a completely normal woman who awoke one morning to find that her female body had been replaced with a male body. Yet in every other way this person continued to experience the world as a woman. If this could actually happen, would you call this person "insane" for continuing to insist "I'm a woman"?

Or is it possible that a totally sane person can look at their body and their feelings and say, "I can see that I have a penis, a square jaw, a muscular physique, and lots of facial hair that needs to be shaved every day. I can see that in every physically-detectable way I have a man's body. But my body doesn't define my gender. In every psychological way that a person knows whether they're a man or a woman, I know that I'm a woman."

Well, this is exactly the state that transgender people find themselves in: their perception of their own gender is exactly the opposite of their biological gender. And professional bodies who assess mental illness do not list being a transgender person as a mental illness.

But of course, the right-wing know-nothings have an opinion. And because they just aren't capable of "getting" what a transgender really is, they make the gross oversimplification that it's just "cross-dressing" and insist it's a mental illness.

If all of the right-wing bigots were replaced with transgender, the world would be a lot better place.

Interesting scenario, but that doesn't happen in real life.

How do they know that they're a woman? I thought gender is a social construct? :hmm:

On a related note, I discovered this morning that on the inside I am a tortoise, despite all outward appearances of me being a human. If you disagree you're a bigot and need to check your non-transtortoise privilege.

Is it acceptable for a woman to wear pants and a blazer in a professional setting?

Due to female privilege, it is acceptable for women to wear men's clothes but not vice versa.

Probably for a good reason, actually. Which one will scare the children?
