oh, and is that a drop, or an incline that he ran into? If it's a drop, WTH is a drop doing at the end of a runway? That seems a bit... hazardous? If it's an incline... wouldn't you have seen it from far enough away to brake? An M5 has good enough stock braking equipment to come to a slow enough speed, if not stop outright, before running into it if brakes are applied immediately upon seeing there is an tall incline.

I don't see how it would be all that hazardous. It could also be that they went the wrong way down the runway for takeoffs (as in, it is flat at one and and a dropoff at the other).

I'd say, "Why oh why were you stupid enough to go with them!? Must've come from your mother!"

Quelland said the community was "devastated" upon hearing of the accident.

I don't doubt it. I'd also bet there will be some pretty hefty lawsuits as a result of this accident.

I feel for the families of the kids who lost their lives. :(

Ah. Well, truth.
But I can't help but believe that a drop at either end would be dangerous, in event of an emergency landing. If they landed short, and the drop is at the front.. well they're basically dead when they crumple up. If they land and can't stop and fall down a drop, well again quite a high chance of no survivors when plane crumples.
But I guess a lot of runways do have such features due to the limits of the terrain surrounding the airport.

Well, the runway was designed to accommodate planes as large as 747s. Commuter planes are apparently the only ones that use it however. The largest is Travolta's 707. So, there is way more than enough room for the planes that regularly use it without having to worry about coming up short or going long.

4 of those were just along for the trip, not the ones doing the dumb act.

ive been up over 120 on my bike and up at 110 in a car. i have no real desire to do that again, unless its on a track.

looking at the pics of the runway, i cant seem to find this 85 ft embankment they flew off of. looks relatively flat to me.

Looking at the runway in google maps, this end seems to be raised. If you look at the other end it appears to have a concrete wall.

I wonder if they thought they would see another concrete wall coming at the them and be able to stop in time, lol. Instead they see the top of a house and trees.

Look at the pic in the link in the OP. You can clearly see how far up the embankment is from where they hit the tree.

Car accidents NEVER make the Darwin Awards. You've got to be a lot more clever than that to be immortalized with a Darwin.

they got into the car, it doesn't say they were tied up or handcuffed
it is like the 9/11 hijackers, they could have stopped him if they tried

at least they did this in a secluded runway in secluded neighborhood, rather than public roads

No one here would have wished this upon anyone or their families. The driver was obviously dumber than a box of rocks, and those that got in the car with him knowingly went along for the ride. It is a horrific accident but it's pretty easy for those of us here to be detached.

They chose to get into the car, ride out to the development, break in, and then ride in a car at high speeds with an 18 year old driver. They are just as responsible as the driver here.

Had to read that article carefully to make sure it didn't involve my nephew.

So which family do you think will be the first to sue the owners of the runway/estate for "wrongful death"? You KNOW it's going to happen!

While we're at it, let's sue the owner of the M5 for "wrongful death" too!
