Not strictly true, lots of apps target later versions of Android APIs. My Desire HD on 2.3.5 would refuse to install so much stuff near the end of its life.

I think people running 2.3.5 aren't that worried about running the latest version of things.

Is anyone not surprised that a thread about the HTC One has derailed into a Samsung vs Apple debate?

Apple caught all sorts of hell for releasing the iPad 4 so soon after the 3, which they damn well should have. Fuck any company that squeeze people for money with pathetic upgrades way too fast.

The pathetic upgrade in that case was the iPad 3. It's SoC couldn't handle the screen it had and so Apple put out a 9 month stopgap.

In a way, your original Note was a stopgap until devices had SoCs to really utilize the big screen (in ways such as the Note 2's multi-window). It has a fairly recent version of Android on it so I don't really get the complaint.

What Android, iOS nor any OS ecosystem protects you from is if you make bad purchase decisions. If you decide to buy a product as a techy person that is OBVIOUSLY going to be a bad long-term investment because its not balanced (like the iPad 3, or the first retina Macbook, or a Motorola Atrix, or a a Note 1) you can't blame the entire ecosystem.

Normal consumers are conditioned that the second they buy technology its outdated and they don't know what different Android versions are so they are not harmed by this. The only people harmed are techies that want things like updates and then I think its fair to put the burden of responsibility on people who want those things to make smart purchase decisions.

No. Doesn't this always happen, eventually? BTW, a note about the above post: the original Atrix was a crappy phone, but the Atrix2 and HD are vast improvements. My A2 on CM10 is still my goto device.

The Desire HD was the highest end Android device you could buy at the time. It's not about if you wanted it or not, it was about having a HTC device on a 2yr contract which didn't see any updates past 2.3.5. Google may package their apps separately but if your manufacturer/carrier don't push out updates it doesn't really matter. It's like having a Windows PC stuck on .NET framework v2.0. I don't see why the One is going to be any different.

If I may, the One X, which I own, received official JB at least. It'll probably get 4.2 sometime this year before losing support (that is, it's uncertain whether KLP will be in the pipeline).

So it went from 4.0 to 4.1? Yeah, my DHD went from 2.2 to 2.3. Don't get your hopes up.

I just meant that it's the same as the GS3's situation. The One X came out slightly before the GS3 though.

Though if you are getting a unibody phone, its sort of to be expected.

Problem with that is that if the display ever gets damaged you can't order a replacement and replace it yourself.

For all the flack that the iphone gets, you can replace the display super easily. Only takes a couple of minutes.

i wonder if its creak-proof. My Nexus 4 creaks like mad when I squeeze it... kinda disgusting for something not designed to be opened.

Mine creaks on a specific spot on the right side. It's not to bad and I hadn't noticed it until you mentioned it and I tested it out.

Whatever though each phone has it's design issue. Nothing alarming IMO.

Please hurry up with Brians review Anandtech it has been 10 days since Anand said he was working away at it.

I don't mind waiting this long because I know he gets all ocd on reviews and really tests the device so he can give us the best run down, but I really want to know so I can base my decision off it - big sales on atm : D

Also the battery result from gsmarena is excellent - every where I turn I hear people talking about the mediocre to poor battery life and it just doesn't compute for me

In one of the older Podcasts, they said Brian was nearly done with the Droid DNA review.....maybe he'll surprise us with a 2-in-1 review :D

This was kind of my take on it also. Anyone who has problems in the first year and gets dicked around in the RMA, or anyone who has problems in the second year will almost certainly not be a repeat customer. Broken screens and dead batteries are a fact of life. For a company that is on the ropes so to speak, this is a pretty big gamble.
