i think this will be another failure like the ford thunderbird of a few years ago.

First of all how do you know that those other cars will be faster than this car? Is this car out yet? Have you driven it? Have you been in a new Taurus, and specifically this one? Also saying if Ford will be around is funny cus Ford has been doing well compared to the other 2 domestics and GM isn't going anywhere.

Oh and here's a direct quote from Autoblog

That's a lofty price tag for a Taurus, but not for a 365-hp, all-wheel-drive sedan stuffed with this much tech and luxury.

That pretty much says it all. The only thing that it doesn't have going for it is it says Ford Taurus and people like you will not buy it. No matter how good it is. This car should be faster than most of the cars that you listed but I do agree with everyone that says it's too expensive. To really attract people the MOST it should have been priced is tops 35k.

okay i changed it to just "better" i actually dont care too much about faster in a straight line. i'm 99% sure it will not drive better than a 3 series. nor would ford give the SHO enough luxury to match infinity/bmw/lexus/acura.
doing better than GM isn't saying SHIT. Gm is probably doing worse than 90% of the car makers in the world.

you do realise the Taurus is the size of a 7 series... right? right?
you can get massaging seats in the vehicles you listed?
you can get the same features the taurus has, for under 40k?
you can run low 12s (this is fast as hell) in those vehicles for under 40k?
you can tell by the looks how it will handle?

again, show me ANY, yes i state ANY car that has the level of technology, the features, and specs, along with size, that this vehicle has, for $38k, and i will give you $1000. must be new however.

can u please tell me where the article in the OP says it can run the quarter mile in low 12s?
and must they have the SAME EXACT features??? because that makes this game not so fun.
no 2 cars (unless identical) will have the same exact features.

okay i'm not going to stay up and wait for your game. i'm sure you'll just beat around the bush and say that the Hyundai Genesis cannot compete with the SHO, but lets compare the specs a bit:

Genesis:
engine: 4.6-liter V8 375 horsepower. 333 pound-feet of torque.
weight: 4,006lbs
tran: 6-sp auto
warranty: 100,000-mile warranty
Outstanding feature IMO: from MotorTrend: "Other than the Rolls-Royce Phantom, the Genesis is the only car that presently offers a Lexicon-brand 7.1 discrete audio system with HD radio, 17 speakers and more than 500 watts of power"
Price: $38k

SHO
engine: 3.5L 365hp, 350lb-ft
weight: 4000+ lbs (est)
tran: 6-sp auto
warranty: 60,000 mile warranty
outstanding feature: massaging rear seats
Price: $38k

so my guess would be that these two cars would be VERY VERY similar to each other on a drag strip. i'd say within 1-1.5 seconds in the quarter mile of each other; with the Genesis having 10 more HP, and the SHO having 17 more lb-ft of torque.

given that the quality of these cars are still unknown (new for both models), i'd give the purchase to the Genesis for the better warranty.

but in the end, i'd still take a 3 series/used 5/TL-SH AWD/RL/M35 over any of those with unknown quality.

Not in the OP's link but linky as well as a few others I've seen have said the same thing about it doing a quarter mile in the 12s. Impressive for a car this size. I can't afford to spend this kind of bread on a car, but if I had 40k extra I would at worst test drive it. I like everything I've read about it. I could care less it has the Taurus name. If a person buys one and people laugh when they see it coming because it's a Taurus that's dumb. The cars specs are awesome and it should be one hellova car. Nothing in it's size class will come close for the price. $40k is a lot for a car but not a lot for what you get here.

and MIKEMIKE was saying he wanted people to bring up a car in the same SIZE range with similar features. People are bringing up cars that are much smaller saying "the Taurus won't be as fast or handle as well" You cannot mention a BMW 3-series in the same breath as the 2 cars have nothing in common.

Fusion is just a name though, I drive a 2000 Taurus and ummm my car shares 1 thing in common with the new SHO, the name. Outside of that there's nothing I can say about my car to compare it to this beast. A SHO Fusion with these specs would probably be better perceived, but it was the exact same car so the name shouldn't matter. Reminds me of when Microsoft changed Vistas appearance for the commercial and called it Mohave and a bunch of people who hated Vista were like "OMG THIS IS THE WINS!?!" And all looked shocked as shit when they found out it was really just Vista with a different theme. Ford should have done that here and released it as a Fusion then like 6 months after it was out went "surprise, it's a Taurus SUCKAS!"

maybe Ford is making a mistake selling it as a Taurus, but it seems to be a hellova car from the specs and it looks very nice to boot.

My motorcycle goes faster and handles better than this P.O.S Taurus :| On a good day, I can haul just as much cargo and people, with bungie cords. So just STFU.

K, I guess we need to clear a few things up. The SHO is fully loaded at $37k. It comes with just about everything you can get. Sync, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning system and plenty of other things.

The cars you keep listing are, for the most part, start around 35k. Most of them are not in the same class either. The Taurus is a full-size sedan. The 3-series is a compact sedan. The 370z and IS350 are both coupes. TL-S starts at 38k. The only one I'd say comes close is the Acura, only because Honda tends to sell their cars fully equipped, so at 38k, it has just about everything you can get, but it is a midsize sedan.

Also, you keep using Infiniti/Nissan. Actually having good cars is new to them. Historically, they've been shit. The interiors weren't very good and the reliability sucked. The idea of performance Lexus was a joke until the IS.

Here's the deal - in the eyes of a consumer would most people consider a Taurus to be on par with an Accord or Camry?

My guess is no - perception is reality.

If you accept the fact that most people don't consider the Taurus to be on par with the competition and realize that even the biggest fanboi would never pay $37K for an Accord, then you have your answer about what's wrong with this car.

Massaging seats? Who gives a fuck, it's a Taurus.

If anything, that will hurt it more than anything. Ford didn't need to bring back the Taurus name, they just needed to make the 500 not suck (well, it wasn't a bad car, it was boring; it was as vanilla as it gets).

No, the new ones are better than the Camry and Accord, and people are going to start realizing it.

fail, to get navigation, which is standard on the SHO, the Genesis costs 42k, plus the SHO has AWD... a major difference...

try again.

uh, you do realise exactly how large a 1-1.5 second difference is on the track, right?

And those people should just buy an automatic transmission and be done with it.

I don't know if I agree with you. I see your point where it is a bridge between the two...but it is an option you can turn off whenever you want and if it gets more people buying manuals...I'm all for it. It still is a manual transmission that you can heel-toe rev-match to your delight.

in all reality, ford still just sucks.

i wouldn't give it a 2nd look (or even a first) when given the chance to drive a honda, acura, lexus or infinity.
everyone here swears that american (or ford in specific) cars r THE SHIT, but they're really not, which is why nobody IN AMERICA buys them.
about 7 of europe's top selling cars are EUROPEAN , about 8 of japan's top selling cars are japanese, while in america, only 1 of the top 10 list is an America Car, + 3-4 pickups. how i'd interpret this is that... americans dont even like to buy american cars? which is why ford and GM were BEGGING for some money to stay alive for a few more years where honda and toyota show now signs of going bankrupt

okay, i absolutely LOVE this arguement...

tell me then, last month, what percentage of cars sold was by GM, Ford, Chrysler... if it was less than 30% ill give you the benefit of the doubt and say "yup no one is buying american cars"
if it wasnt, you can stop posting in here.
and uh... Ford has yet to take any government money... get educated before you talk troll

Careful, you might shatter his world.

Looks like a cool product. I don't buy the whole "OMG, eeewwwwwwww, it's a Taurus. I'm not even going to look at it!" argument.

If I'm somehow magically able to afford one and buy it I might dig the fact it might well have that "eeeewwww it's a Taurus!" Stigma. Right now I drive a silver 2000 Taurus and I see about ohh 20 that look exactly like mine every hour on the road. With the price tag the new one won't appeal to Taurus owners, and the people who can afford it will go "what! I can get a BMW that's half the size for the same price *phhsst!*

I could buy one and NOT see them all around me lol.
