I dunno man. It's a nice package, but I just don't see people dropping that cash, even on a halo car. $37K is a lot of money, especially now, and Ford Taurus isn't synonymous with this segment.

What the hell....they rev match down shifts? That's pretty kick ass.

Nissan has this in the new 370Z (as an option) on a traditional manual gearbox. As you downshift the computer will rev match as you engage the lower gear. I think that is probably the coolest thing about the new Z in fact.

I hate flappy paddle gearboxes personally but I remain interested in this car. Sounds pretty sweet to me! :thumbsup:

It definitely is the coolest thing about the Z. I can't believe it has taken a company this long to come out with it...but bravo to Nissan for doing so. Sure, there is a small number of people who would rather rev-match themselves...and for them they can turn it off...but I would say most people would very quickly become accustomed with this feature and the fact that it never misses a beat.

Well like the article said, the car has become a standard rental fleet car. It's going to be hard to get rid of that image especially with a 40k price tag. But the car does look great. Why didn't the big 3 design cars that look like this back then?

This is valid...and would be a reason to buy it used until the value of American cars start increasing. It is a supply and demand argument. If this was a good enough car that everyone wanted them used...then the value of it used would go up until the point where it may just be worth buying it new again. Taurus maybe a bad name right now because of fleet sales...but really buying any Ford for $40K would probably be a bad idea if you are worried about the "name" on the vehicle. I'm all for American companies coming out with good, desirable cars that will in turn improve the reputation and resale values of their vehicles. Ford has come a long way in both quality/reliability as well as offerings. Look at what you had available to you in 2000...and look at what you have available to you now (or in the near future). A Ford Fiesta from Europe...a mid-size hybrid with better ratings than any hybrid in its class, and now a 365HP AWD sedan. And all of this with hugely improved reliability to the point where Consumer Reports recommends the Ford Fusion 4cyl over the Toyota Camry 4 cyl for reliability.

been at every auto show for the past 3 years and all ford will say is 'it's coming.' it's almost as bad as the new camaro

Agreed, not everyone wants to spend $40k on a car now. Especially a ford and definately not a taurus.
 
Two things that I find funny: 1) if this was the car (not simply the SHO version) that Ford came out with instead of the 500, they probably wouldn't have had to make this half-assed attempt at getting recognition by bringing back the Taurus name (they could have left the old Taurus as a dedicated fleet vehicle like the Crown Vic) and 2) why not leave the performance version for Mercury or Lincoln? Ford seems to insist on not really making their upscale and luxury brands unique. GM at least got a clue and realized Cadillac actually needs to have luxury in order to be a luxury brand.
 
I just want to know why Ford even keeps Mercury around. What do they have, 4 vehicles that are all just direct rebadges of Ford bread and butter vehicles?

Dump that useless franchise like GM did with Olds. Let Lincoln be the sport luxury equivalent to Cadillac and let Ford be the bread and butter.

definitely. and the MKR would be an awesome flagship/halo car. they've already taken styling cues from it.

You want a bit of irony? Oldsmobile was still selling as many vehicles as Mercury and Lincoln combined when GM decided to shut them down.
 
Mercury is only around because Lincoln dealers are Lincoln Mercury dealers and they need the sales. I've always thought they should have just made them Lincoln Mazda dealers but whatever.

The SHO is an expensive car but its a lot of car for that money.
 
Mercury doesn't cost much, and different kind of people buy it.

it is a bridge between ford and lincoln. mercury also has great reliability.
 
would NOT buy it because of the following reasons:
-$40k can get me MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH better driving cars such as: 3 series, g37, 370z, TL-S, maxima, IS350... etc
-quality is still "meh" compared to those i've listed (and not limited to those i've listed, which are just examples of better cars IMO)
-the taurus FELL OFF! it used to be one of the best selling cars with accord and camry. A&C stayed up there, and nobody buys the taurus now.
-resale value of fords = sucky
-who knows how much longer ford will be around?

i think this will be another failure like the ford thunderbird of a few years ago.

First of all how do you know that those other cars will be faster than this car? Is this car out yet? Have you driven it? Have you been in a new Taurus, and specifically this one? Also saying if Ford will be around is funny cus Ford has been doing well compared to the other 2 domestics and GM isn't going anywhere.

That pretty much says it all. The only thing that it doesn't have going for it is it says Ford Taurus and people like you will not buy it. No matter how good it is. This car should be faster than most of the cars that you listed but I do agree with everyone that says it's too expensive. To really attract people the MOST it should have been priced is tops 35k.
