In the past, Mac ads have pissed me off. Therefore, I no longer watch them. I don't watch TV much and when I do it isn't in real time (FF is my friend).

I wonder what Apple's market share is these days? I would guess it's increasing. Not that they'll ever overtake Windows PCs.

It's approaching 10% in the United States. Apple doesn't want to overtake Windows. Just get a good foothold in the market.

altho their total share is at about 10%, they dominate the market for machines costing above $1000. I think they have almost 70% of the market for machines costing greater than $1000.

Just desktops, or desktops and laptops? $1000+ Windows desktops are only bought by gamers and idiots these days. $1000+ Windows laptops probably aren't that uncommon.

I can't remember (and can't be bothered searching ;)
the point is that altho apple sells smaller volumes than say microsoft (in terms of installations of vista versus os x), they are making a much higher profit per unit sold because their business is basically luxury hardware. (Apple uses its superior desktop environment and software as a way of selling their hardware, which is where they make the big profits). hence apple is bringing in about half the revenue of microsoft, with only a fraction of the total units shifted.

Luxury hardware is bullshit. They just charge more for the same crap you can get elsewhere for cheaper.

And can you tell me where you can get this superior desktop environment and software? Because Apple certainly isn't selling anything like that with any of their machines.

I love those stupid mac ads talking about all the problems with Vista. What problems? I have no problems with Vista at all. It runs perfectly for me. Everything I have works fine with it and it's stable.

Windows has been more stable than Apple's OS, historically, in my experience. I've used plenty of Macs and these crazy ideas that they "just work" and don't crash is garbage.

No you don't have the blue screen of death on a Mac. You have the spinning gay rainbow wheel of death.

Luxury HW? Superior desktop? Dude, they use the same shit as PCs but with a bios code that will make it only work on Macs and cost 2-3x as much. The also use a unix knockoff like Linux or some other ver. I actually used to use it on a PC many years ago. The new cheaper mac book just switched to Nvidia's chipset, they used to use Intel chipsets. A Mac is a non-upgradable PC with a slighlty more stable OS. I say slightly because when a Mac crashes, it crashes bad and unless you know unix command lines you are fubared.

So that makes them idiots ? but MAC users pay that for machines that cost PC users ~800...Are they idiots ?

im gonna agree with Balr0g here, ive used a PC for as long as ive owned a computer, i used macs for 2 years when my college got them for everything my junior year, in those 2 years i crashed every version of apple OS that was out at the time more then ive ever had windows crash in my entire lifetime of using PCs from win 3.1 to vista

vista also never crashes, 100% of all issues people have with the OS can be sent to the PEBKAC department

Fully agreed. But to clarify: I interpret "luxury hardware" as meaning "the same stuff repackaged in a trendy, attractive case and sold for a huge markup." Like a luxury car or fancy coat. The only advantage is how much you want to show off. Otherwise everyone would just drive around in Corollas and Malibus (they get you around just as well as BMWs or Merdedes) and wear synthetic parkas (keep you just as warm as fur or leather). I think showing off with your computer is stupid, though. I mean you're basically advertising how big a nerd you are.

As for the ads, I also hate them. They strike me as being a lot like negative campaign ads. MS, on the one hand, is going for positive ads only (either the nonsensical Seinfeld ads or the cute "I'm a PC" ads), while Apple just has to be the ones to go negative. Given how many negative political ads are already on TV, the last thing people want is to be faced with negative commercials for products. Apple needs to focus on just showing off their sexy hardware, because it's the only thing they have going for them, and it's the main reason for their success. Most people who buy Macs don't care how their computer stacks up against others in terms of features, performance, or price. They just want the cool-looking one they saw on TV.

Actually I was referring more to the laptops. The desktops are silly but what I always say is, if you're going to buy a pre-built desktop, you may as well at least consider a Mac alongside Dell, HP, etc. If you are at all able to put one together yourself, though, no way. Self-built is a much better deal than any pre-made desktop.

It's not all in the megahertz (MGz or whatever) which you PC users argue about. Today's hardware is so fast, you don't even need that much RAM or CPU power. 2MGz is all you need. The rest is all about user experience and that's what Apple specializes in.

Apple's hardware and software feels much more higher in quality than any PC and to get that, you pay the premium albeit SMALL. It's really a no brainer. They make amazing products and an experience that can only be poorly mimicked. They've been doing it for years and will continue to do it because that is what they do and that's why they sell like hot cakes.

I went with my sister to the Apple store this weekend and she bought the smaller Macbook, I forget it's size but it's great. It's so fast and so elegant. From the inspiring packaging to the first bootup experience, it's been *just* amazing. I just couldn't stop using it. The computer is full of surprises. (is it even a computer??!) At first I couldn't find the mouse button but *laugh* it was RIGHT THERE! hidden INSIDE the Apple track pad. The other cool thing was the hidden camera and built in wireless. It connected to my wireless without having to do *anything* - beat that Windows!

Anyway, Macs need and deserve the recognition they deserve and these advertisements are just the ticket.

smug isn't so bad...

I'm sorry, but if you add 'elitist' and 'smug' on top of that then you have the very definition of a Mac user.

Have you ever used a Mac, or are you just white knighting? Walk into a Mac store - the employee to customer ratio is at least 3:1. Mac users just need a lot more help. Having been forced to use a Mac for over a year now, I can tell you that Macs are retarded. I'm glad that Apple is still in business because I think competition is important and they serve a certain demographic, but that demographic annoys the fuck out of me.

Mac has no reason to exist. This is why they have to remain trendy and cool in order to stay in business.

1) Linux is superior for most tasks
2) Windows is superior for the rest (ie gaming, and no one has quite made a spreadsheet program as slick as MS Excel).

If you like how pretty a Mac is, your solution is the following - install a flavor of linux that's designed to look like OS X. Or, install linux and configure it to look/act like OS X. Done, now you're running a Macintosh! All that's left is to get you a trendy case and you're good to go. But damn, it's just a PC with better software that looks the same as a Mac. Oh well, I guess your e-penis doesn't get any extra points for that.

You people need to stop acting like Linux is better than OSX and Windows. Not everyone has the desire to spend 10 hours untarballing a hash table for each driver, or whatever it is you have to do in Linux just to make it work.

No kidding, I hate it when people bring up Linux and try to talk about it like it's such a great OS. It's not. It's highly configurable and probably great for programmers or something. But it's not a consumer OS and it never will be.

You're insane.

BTW, your mac couldn't connect to my wireless without doing anything. Why? Because I actually SECURE my internet connection so dumbshits like you with an Apple can't just connect to it and use it.

I would argue that you need more than a 2 "MGz" CPU, whatever "MGz" is. Most CPU's these days are over 2GHz anyway. Also, RAM is quite important...but if you want 256MB then fine with me. Perhaps that's the only way you could afford the Apple is to not upgrade to that lofty 512MB model.

If Apple specailizes in user experience, why do I feel like I would need to have a lobotomy in order to enjoy using their software? There's user friendly, and then there's moron friendly, and that seems to be what Apple is targetting.

I've used Apples. I've torn them apart. They are no higher quality than PC's unless you're buying trash. The price premium is not small, it is quite a difference. When I purchased my Dell laptop, I think if I had gone with a similar Apple at the time, it would have costed about $1200 more for similar performance. No brainer all right.

Inspiring packaging? Who gives a shit? I don't care about the box it came in. Though I could see you drooling on it in a corner for a while. Plain brown box is fine. It's what's inside the box that matters.

Oh and why is there only one mouse button on a laptop in this day and age?

Memo to hiromizu:

PC users stopped arguing about MHz a long time ago. Especially after Apple released that dual 2.5GHz G5 and claimed it was the world's fastest desktop PC. Oh that's right, they went to court over that. Sounds like those ads were the ticket.

Also, "Apple's hardware and software feels much more higher in quality than any PC and to get that, you pay the premium albeit SMALL." So in other words, you pay extra for a placebo? I'd like to sell you some snake oil, it's good for what ails ya.

Oh, and laptops of all flavors have had built-in wireless and cameras for a long time now.

So just like previously posted you can't put anything tangible into why you think Mac's are better? Great, and you brought your sister into it?
My Dell Crapspiron has all of it except for questionable mouse button. And even so, single and double clicking is possible like most trackpads.
Built in wireless? Holy shit, say it ain't so!!!! Do you live in a box? Just about every laptop has built in wireless. Mine even has a wifi finder, like most do now. It means you can find a signal without powering on the laptop.
Built in camera, holy crap...say it aint' so.
Oh, and a non-industry standard display port? Why not include something that is the standard now as well? Instead of charging for an adapter.
My laptop is more flexible with a built in VGA and HDMI ports.

Oh and why is there only one mouse button on a laptop in this day and age?

im guessing he meant the lappy itself when her refered to packaging, o_O shiny metal
