I wouldn't mind getting a macbook if they will just let me put a decent graphics card in their macbook. Why the fuck do I have to pay 2000 bucks just to be able play a couple games like warcraft? I got a t60 and it came out to be only 1200 bucks with an x1400.

On the other hand, they're ipod and iphone line won me over pretty bad. I've owned most of the brands and the ipod and iphone have to be the best devices i've used (I don't need all those gimmicky features like radio, and a mic to record onto my mp3 player.......) in those categories. With an exception for iphone fw 2.0 and 2.0.1. Those crashed really bad and were shit.

Well, the new MacBooks actually aren't that bad a deal. You get a GeForce 9400M, 2.1 GHz Core 2 Duo, and an LED-backlit screen, for $1300. If you configure a Dell to have the same stuff it comes out to about the same price.

The problems:

1. Not everyone wants or needs all that new stuff. Apple does still sell the old style MacBook with the crappy Intel X3100 graphics for $1000, but that's about $300 more than you'd spend for an equivalent Dell. Apple does not want people to buy their stuff on a budget, and if you do, they punish you with huge markups.

2. For people who do want all the bells and whistles, the MacBook still isn't necessarily the way to go. It has some cool features but it still lacks ExpressCard (that's a "pro" feature that requires an extra $700 for a MacBook Pro) and it has no option for a Blu-Ray drive (which is available as an option on nearly any laptop from other companies).

3. The price/performance of the new MacBook may be good right now, but in a few months it'll be bad again because Apple updates their stuff so infrequently and charges such crazy prices for BTO options like RAM and hard drive space. Good thing is you can replace those things yourself.

I really don't understand why you guys hate Mac users/lovers/fanboys that much to the point where expletives are necessary to convey your negative emotions. If you think they're arrogant and annoying, than don't click on these types of threads where you know you're going to see them. I recently bought a macbook, and I like it . . . specs wise, i probably could have gotten a cheaper PC but in terms of build quality, you really can't take anything away from apple. When I used to hold my asus laptop from a corner with the screen open, i could noticeable feel the palmrest and keyboard flex, not so with the macbook. I can't even find the heat sink vent for my macbook . . . it seems like the entire block of aluminum is the heatsink and the heat is dissipated through the shell itself. Also, I can't even find where the speakers are mounted . . . it just makes for a really clean looking laptop. It's not your money they're spending so why does it bother you that they chose to spend some extra money for better engineering, looks and ease of use?

I think hating on Mac users is a lot like hating on people who drive BMWs, it's their prerogative to spend their money how they see fit and they think its worth it for them to spend that extra money. You don't have to agree with their reasoning for it but again, they're not spending your money. Why all the hate?

I think Apple's recent ad campaigns have caused the Mac vs. Windows wars to flare up again. People had pretty much moved on but now Apple has to put a smug, arrogant bastard on TV to represent Mac users. It's annoying because it's like they're insulting everyone who uses Windows.

$400+ over similary HW equipped PC is not small premium, buddy, even if you are typical atot poster that makes 100k a year and works 20 hours a week.

Same hardware you noob.

Bah! They both suck!

Atari 800XL FTW! Works on any TV. Its plug and play, on-chip OS. Never crashed in the 25 years that I have had it. :)

PC vs. Mac, Canon vs. Nikon, Ford vs. Chevy, my dick is bigger than yours...all those arguments are silly! Instead of people advocating one tool over another, how about taking pride in the actual work you produce with said tool? Does anyone remember what brand of brushes Michelangelo used on the Sistine Chapel?

And for you command people, runas /u:admin cmd....

Just sayin.

EDIT:

I should probably clarify this is Windows XP for the unknowing.

Yes, I know, however not all windows software will run without being an administrator. To make matters worse, this does not solve the problem of knowing which programs need administrative access or give me any feedback as to what the program needs admin access for.

And to answer a few previous posters questions. Yes, I configured my mac so it would ask me permission to perform admin tasks. Why? So that if there ever is an exploit in the wild that targets osx, it's damage can be contained to my home directory. This also allows me to restrict what applications I run can access on my system. If I am unsure about what an app will do I can run it as my user and if I get an admin prompt, then I can decide to not run it. This also limits the damage someone can do if they happen to come across my notebook while it is unlocked. I also use encrypted file containers for important files. So I have to type a password in just to see my tax returns.

Someone else said I did not say what I used my mac for. I believe I said quite clearly. I use it to manage linux and unix servers. I use it to design and write web applications. I use it to as a presentation unit to teach the courses I teach at a community college. I use it to develop flash when required (I hate flash). The adobe interfaces on osx are much better then on windows. I use my mac to browse websites and to edit documents and spreadsheets.

On a personal side, I use my mac to create videos from my digital camcorder. I also use my mac to create music using garageband. I play a few games now and then like spore or warcraft. I edit documents and browse websites. I check and reply to IM's and emails. It's just like a 'pc' only I prefer the interface and software available to me. I could do everything I do now (except flash) in linux. The only reason I do not is because the hardware support for notebooks is lacking on linux. Mac hardware support is wonderful because well, they designed the hardware.

Everyone talks about hardware costs. I did pay a premium for my mac. I calculated it to be about 500.00 over my dell notebook that I got at the exact same time. But when I put them side by side I feel I got my 500.00 worth. Running windows or linux, my dell is still larger, hotter, heavier, and has lower quality display. Running windows it does not have the applications and tools I am used to and running linux the wireless simply does not function.

Yes, i could spend time customizing windows to work the way I want and probably get close. But the design philosophy of windows clash with what I want. Mac has what I want. Linux has what I want. Right now my mac meets me needs and I feel it was a great value.

What I don't understand is why windows users (not really linux users) feel so threatened by the mac they have to argue that it is junk. I have never argued windows is junk. i have simply said I do not like the way it is designed. When I have used windows I have never had a problem with it's operation. I simply do not like the way it works. I do not like drive letters (We frequently have problems with drive letter assignments on campus), I do not like the fact it can not be ran without the overhead of a gui. I do not like the security features. I do not like the general look and feel, and I do not like the HIG that the developers develop to.

Yes I am long winded, but at least I use paragraphs.

P.S I like the fact that mac is elitest. It keeps me from having to solve everyone's computer problems. Friends call me with questions and I can just answer "Sorry I use a mac, you should buy one." They look at the price and decide to stop asking me how to fix their crap. It is better then explaining for the one millionth time why you don't run exe files sent to you via email. On top of that, I don't have to run antivirus, antispyware, or any of that crap. Because I know nobody is targeting mac to build a bot net. I hope they never get a userbase large enough to change that.

Oh please name one substation windows only application that is a "Oh shit! I need to go buy a windows license". Nobody even mentions what is so great about windows they have to keep using it for. This is a strawman tactic. 99% of users out there have no need of windows at all. They could get buy without paying some overpriced premium on an operating system and just use linux. Why are you chumps paying that such a huge premium for the ability to do the same stuff as what you can do for free in linux?

All computers can do the same tasks. It's how they do them that make the sales. I have explained valid reasons why I like my mac. I'm sure it bothers you to know I get actual work done and I am happy. It's called personal preference. Get used to it. I want to get as much done naively as possible. That means no cygwin, no wine, etc. Mac lets me use all the tools I'm used to in linux and the proprietary software I want to use (such as flash) but does not have a linux version.

Windows simply can not do that.

My stepdad simply can not use a mac. The only way he would get it is if I could put a red X in the right hand corner to close apps and put shortcuts to all his programs on the desktop. My mom loves the mac. She came over one day, saw mine, asked me what it was, used it for about an hour and went out and bought an iMac. My grandma used linux for about 2 years until she finally wanted a new computer and bought a dell. She went from windows 98 to debian linux to windows vista. She's not very computer smart. But she follows directions really well. I used to just ssh in and install the software she wanted and show her how to access it via the gnome applications menu. She has had quite a few questions on vista. She didn't understand why when she plugged in her usb stuff sometimes it was E and other times it was F or G. After I hooked her back up with open office, firefox, thunderbird, and picasa she was set.

Call me an idiot, but the X moved from the right side to the leftside and shortcuts to all the programs are on the bottom of the desktop...

My biggest issue right now is turning CTRL c + v into apple c + v

I'd gladly pay a $100 premium to be able to use my computer without having to ever touch a command line.

Linux is fucking COMPLICATED. Installing, using, and maintaining the OS is a gigantic chore. A lot of apps require you to compile them. I barely even know what compiling is, much less how to do it. And if I were to ask a Linux expert how to compile something, he'd spout off a bunch of jargon and make me even more confused.

I prefer the "download exe, run exe, delete exe, use software" approach.

I run 0 antivirus / antispyware or any of that crap either.

It is knowing what to open and not what to open.

In the 10 or so years I've been building computers, I have not once used anti-virus.

I will admit I've installed something I didn't mean to, and my sister has destroyed a computer, but common sense should deter you from these mistakes, not anti-viruses.

That being said I'm not a pc fan boy and I've had minimal uses with Macs. But these so called "advantages" can be narrowed to common sense, but luckily with Macs you don't need it as much (apparently).

I don't think anyone mentioned specific "need windows over OSX" because the obvious is the price. If both are equally as "great" (or as you put it, all computers do the same tasks), why pay more? You even point this out in your post. Its the tax on the hardware we like avoiding, not necessarily the opsys.

That being said, if I could get a Mac at the same price as I can a WinPC, I'd get Mac just to try it. Until then, what is the point in paying more?

The only thing I like more about the macbook design is the aluminum casing. But that isn't worth 600$+.

This is my similar experience with Linux. I can get the OS up and all of the hardware running, but when it comes time to actually get new programs to work it all goes to hell.

FAR from it. I like the fact that it'll zoom without the ugly pixelation and will animate when a certain iprogram needs attention. The Windows one is blocky and goes all crazy when you try to do stuff. It's just far more efficient.

define "goes all crazy"

and IN FUNCTION, that's pretty much the same damn thing =P

Admittedly, I've only played with my MB for like 3 hours so I don't know shit about that OS =X
