Ever heard of right clicking and hitting run as? Guess what, you can run it as an admin!
And for you command people, runas /u:admin cmd....
Just sayin.
EDIT:
I should probably clarify this is Windows XP for the unknowing.
Yes, I know, however not all windows software will run without being an administrator. To make matters worse, this does not solve the problem of knowing which programs need administrative access or give me any feedback as to what the program needs admin access for.
And to answer a few previous posters questions. Yes, I configured my mac so it would ask me permission to perform admin tasks. Why? So that if there ever is an exploit in the wild that targets osx, it's damage can be contained to my home directory. This also allows me to restrict what applications I run can access on my system. If I am unsure about what an app will do I can run it as my user and if I get an admin prompt, then I can decide to not run it. This also limits the damage someone can do if they happen to come across my notebook while it is unlocked. I also use encrypted file containers for important files. So I have to type a password in just to see my tax returns.
Someone else said I did not say what I used my mac for. I believe I said quite clearly. I use it to manage linux and unix servers. I use it to design and write web applications. I use it to as a presentation unit to teach the courses I teach at a community college. I use it to develop flash when required (I hate flash). The adobe interfaces on osx are much better then on windows. I use my mac to browse websites and to edit documents and spreadsheets.
On a personal side, I use my mac to create videos from my digital camcorder. I also use my mac to create music using garageband. I play a few games now and then like spore or warcraft. I edit documents and browse websites. I check and reply to IM's and emails. It's just like a 'pc' only I prefer the interface and software available to me. I could do everything I do now (except flash) in linux. The only reason I do not is because the hardware support for notebooks is lacking on linux. Mac hardware support is wonderful because well, they designed the hardware.
Everyone talks about hardware costs. I did pay a premium for my mac. I calculated it to be about 500.00 over my dell notebook that I got at the exact same time. But when I put them side by side I feel I got my 500.00 worth. Running windows or linux, my dell is still larger, hotter, heavier, and has lower quality display. Running windows it does not have the applications and tools I am used to and running linux the wireless simply does not function.
Yes, i could spend time customizing windows to work the way I want and probably get close. But the design philosophy of windows clash with what I want. Mac has what I want. Linux has what I want. Right now my mac meets me needs and I feel it was a great value.
What I don't understand is why windows users (not really linux users) feel so threatened by the mac they have to argue that it is junk. I have never argued windows is junk. i have simply said I do not like the way it is designed. When I have used windows I have never had a problem with it's operation. I simply do not like the way it works. I do not like drive letters (We frequently have problems with drive letter assignments on campus), I do not like the fact it can not be ran without the overhead of a gui. I do not like the security features. I do not like the general look and feel, and I do not like the HIG that the developers develop to.
Yes I am long winded, but at least I use paragraphs.
P.S I like the fact that mac is elitest. It keeps me from having to solve everyone's computer problems. Friends call me with questions and I can just answer "Sorry I use a mac, you should buy one." They look at the price and decide to stop asking me how to fix their crap. It is better then explaining for the one millionth time why you don't run exe files sent to you via email. On top of that, I don't have to run antivirus, antispyware, or any of that crap. Because I know nobody is targeting mac to build a bot net. I hope they never get a userbase large enough to change that.
