I dislike the mac ads since they do nothing but bash windows.

That said, I just bought my first Mac 5 days ago.

So the pot can call the kettle black.
With that aside, these ads aren't for "us".
I guess we can assume they are working as Mac sales have been up since they started running (as in the very start of the Mac guy ads).
If the hardware and price was right I'd consider an Apple product, but I got a very nice deal on my Zune and the entire Mac line is really overpriced so it is a moot point for me.
For someone who doesn't know any better (or my mother trying to get me a nice gift) these can be fairly powerful.
Personally, I feel they should have just ignored the MS media blitz and kept doing their own thing.

I going to get flamed but Im past caring, the amount of stick I've got on some fellow students for being windows/ Linux based has pushed me so far...

For me, the majority of mac users seem like the type of person who derives one's sense of self worth by adopting a elitist attitude. People like you have to find a way to, in their own minds, rise above the rest of the masses. Knowing the "secret handshake", parroting the obscure, and braying against the commonplace is how you sustain your ego.

Makes me wonder if all your anti <fill in the blank> diatribes are merely further expressions of this need for ego-reinforcement. The sheer bulls*it they come out with " Mac are faster, Mac's don't get Virus's ".

I wonder if IBM had lost to the apple of the 80's would we all be sat here posting on a forum?

I applaud MS for the open ecosystem there OS supports...I wonder how many less hardware companies would exist if they did not have this approach.

Bring it

From OC

I think this is appropriate ;

1) Macs are very unpopular compared to PCs: Apple sold about 2.5 million Macs to the world last quarter. That may seem like a lot, and for Apple, they are. Their sales are definitely up considerably over the last two years.

However, the world bought 72 million PCs last year. This gives Apple a whopping 3.5% world market share, which means PCs have the other 96.5%. Yes, 3.5% is definitely better than the 2-2.5% it was getting just a few years back, but when you go from losing 98-2 to losing 97-3, yes, that's an improvement, but . . . .

That 3.5% doesn't even look too good compared to some of Apple's sales in the past. Back in 1995, Apple sold 4.5 million Macs out of a total 50 million PCs sold. That was 9% world market share, or 2.5 times as much as it is now. Put another way, the average computer buyer is less than half as likely to buy a Mac in 2008 as he or she was in 1995.

2) Where the future is, Macs aren't: PCs are a worldwide phenomenon. Less than one in four PCs are now sold in the United States. Asian PCs sales are now about double that of the United States. There is absolutely no doubt that this difference will continue and grow in the future.

The story is quite different for Macs. Over half of the Macs sold in the world are sold in the United States. Europe represents most of the rest. Japan buys 4% of the total, and total Asian sales are probably around 10%. Yes, if you look at the U.S. alone, Apple had almost an 8% market share last quarter, but market share in Asia is probably less than 1%. The growth markets in the PC industry are in Asia, and Macs aren't there.

3. It's just a PC!! Repeat after me, a Mac is just a PC. There is no hardware difference between the two machines any more, they use the same type processor and are built with the same off-the-shelf PC components.** The only technical difference between the two is that a Mac has some added routines built-in to allow the use of MacOsX. That's it. If anyone says the Mac is better because it looks nicer, they are shallow people who are literally judging a book by its cover.

(**What is true is that the average Mac will have a faster Intel processor than, say, the average Dell, but that's because you have no choice in the matter with Apple. It's also true that Apple will occasionally make available PC technologies standard a bit earlier than the PC manufacturer, which might be good if you actually use, say, a Firewire port, not so good if you don't.)

The only grounds upon which Apple/Mac users can possibly claim any measure of superiority is in software, simply because there is no difference in the hardware. The funny thing about that is that the average Mac user can't explain to you why MacOSX is better if you ask them for specifics; they almost always get mystical on you.

Oh, they'll mention a few concrete talking points, but when you look at them closely, you'll see that these "advantages" would vanish if Macs ever became successful. Take "Macs can't get viruses." First, there aren't as many viruses out there these days, it's much more lucrative writing ad/spy/malware. Second, Macs certainly can get viruses. Third, it's true Macs generally don't get viruses, but that's just because there's so few of them around compared to PCs. If you're out to wreak havoc, who are you going to target, 97% of the market, or 3%? Finally, what do you think is going to happen when a serious virus-writer does target that 3%, who think they can't get a virus?

4) The unifying theme: Look at who uses them!! Any ad which just said what I just said would be boring, no, dreadful. You can't tell this story, you have to show it, and the way to show it is through the Mac user. There's no need to reinvent the wheel here. Take the hit that all MS can do is copy Apple, and use the same format, even the same look Apple does with the PC/Mac commercials. Just turn the tables on the Mac guy. If you can't spoof Mac users as shallow, self-centered pompous asses ad infinitum, you'd better hang it up.

Here's a few starters:

PC Guy: How come nobody buys Macs?
Mac Man: Only cool people buy Macs.
PC Guy: (points to graph showing Mac share drop since 1995) How come there's a lot fewer cool people around these days?
Mac Guy: Macs have become sooo much cooler that only the very coolest people, like me, qualify to own one. That and global warming.

PC Guy: If Macs are so easy to use, why do you need Apple Geniuses in Apple Stores?
Mac Man: Because Mac users need to talk to equals.
PC Guy: But if nothing ever goes wrong with a Mac, what do you have to talk about?
Mac Guy: We talk about what geniuses we are.

PC Guy: Why should I buy a Mac rather than a PC?
Mac Man: Because they are superior.
PC Guy: How are they superior?
Mac Guy: Is it not obvious?
PC Guy: Well, no.
Mac Man: You need to evolve some more.
PC Guy: Couldn't you just tell me why?
Mac Guy: Words cannot even begin to explain. Only the greatest minds can understand and appreciate such wonders, and such people have no need for explanations. All the deserving few need to do to get it is sit in a lotus position and chant, "MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAC" for a few hours everyday until enlightenment comes. Would you like to join me?

I know, MS will never do it, but wouldn't it be incredibly entertaining if they did? Smile

I don't think their new product lineup is going to help them. The worlds economy is in the tank and they release minor revisions of their products and jack the price up by $300?! Wtf?

These commercials are ridiculous. MS is on an advertising kick lately, but on the whole MS doesn't advertise that much considering how big they are - meanwhile, Apple is known for it's ads. That commercials is far and away the stupidest ad I've ever seen.

The other just doesn't make sense. Microsoft doesn't call Windows Vista by it's name? Has Apple missed the "Windows Mojave Experiment" commercials? "This is Windows Vista? Wow!" Yea....they never mention it by it's name!!!!

I've always hated those Mac vs PC commercials for their subtle false advertising - these might be even worse than the previous commercials.

I agree with you. Microsoft has done so much more for the software development community than Apple could ever hope to achieve. Even disregarding the past 20 years in which MS has revolutionised the way we use computers we can look to the next 7 - 10 years which will tell a very interesting picture indeed.

While Apple keeps pimping more and more of their proprietary bullshit and making the lives of developers hell, MS has developed some of the most amazing development environments the software world has ever seen. The .NET framework allows software developers to develop Windows software in their choice of several languages with such a incredibly powerful framework and toolset. All at no cost (if you develop in the very powerful Express Edition suite).

We are able to write amazing 3D game software in the MS XNA studio so game developers are able to produce software for the PC and XBOX in parallel with performance so close to C++ that I'm confident we will see AAA titles developed in this environment very soon. We can create supremely powerful web applications utilising ASP.NET, MS SQL database transactions and powerful AJAX tools almost by dragging and dropping. Complex Windows applications can be prototyped in a matter of hours or days and development times (and therefore budgets) can be cut in half or better.

What has Apple done for software development lately? They put a gag order on developers creating iPhone apps (lifted only recently) which stopped devs from talking even amongst themselves. They bog developers down in proprietary environments and when apps are ready for release, Apple has the final say on whether or not the results of hundreds of man hours will ever see the light of day.

Oh but look! They has a glass trackpad!

Mac users are, in my opinion, superficial boneheads.

Both ads suck, but that's how software commercials work. Best way to advertise software is by giving free trials and free full software.

Thats been pretty much constant since the early 80's. The only reason Apple stays alive is they dump most of their money into marketing.

What about the Windows ad with Jerry Sienfield? MS paid him like a million bucks to do it.

I'd say all of Apple's commercials combined haven't cost them a fraction of that one dumb ass MS one with Jerry in it.

And? Apple is still spending money to make ads and is giving Microsoft shit for doing the exact same thing.

"regular people" = R-tards who can't follow simple instructions like "don't fucking go to any and all random sites and infect my computer with spyware and viruses - assfuckbitchho!"

smug isn't so bad...

I'm sorry, but if you add 'elitist' and 'smug' on top of that then you have the very definition of a Mac user.

Have you ever used a Mac, or are you just white knighting? Walk into a Mac store - the employee to customer ratio is at least 3:1. Mac users just need a lot more help. Having been forced to use a Mac for over a year now, I can tell you that Macs are retarded. I'm glad that Apple is still in business because I think competition is important and they serve a certain demographic, but that demographic annoys the fuck out of me.

Mac has no reason to exist. This is why they have to remain trendy and cool in order to stay in business.

1) Linux is superior for most tasks
2) Windows is superior for the rest (ie gaming, and no one has quite made a spreadsheet program as slick as MS Excel).

If you like how pretty a Mac is, your solution is the following - install a flavor of linux that's designed to look like OS X. Or, install linux and configure it to look/act like OS X. Done, now you're running a Macintosh! All that's left is to get you a trendy case and you're good to go. But damn, it's just a PC with better software that looks the same as a Mac. Oh well, I guess your e-penis doesn't get any extra points for that.

I do wonder where the f*ck computing would be if it wasn't for MS/IBM.

I'm used to be a die hard pc user until i recently got a macbook but I must say, the Mac vs PC ads are annoying as hell. I'd much rather they save that money they're spending on those ads and reduce their prices. Just my two cents.

I wonder what Apple's market share is these days? I would guess it's increasing. Not that they'll ever overtake Windows PCs.

It's approaching 10% in the United States. Apple doesn't want to overtake Windows. Just get a good foothold in the market.

altho their total share is at about 10%, they dominate the market for machines costing above $1000. I think they have almost 70% of the market for machines costing greater than $1000.

Just desktops, or desktops and laptops? $1000+ Windows desktops are only bought by gamers and idiots these days. $1000+ Windows laptops probably aren't that uncommon.

I dunno, I just got a brand spankin new loaded Lenovo Thinkpad T61 from work and I can't stand it. I love my MacBook Pro so much more. OSX just beats the pants off of XP it's isn't funny. Doing software development in Windows is so much more awkward than using the command line. Cygwin is ok, but it just doesn't feel the same.
