If you mean I will not give up when I am right, then, yes, you are correct, this is one of those threads.

I was unaware that arguing a correct point made you an asshole.

MotionMan

No, arguing like an asshole makes you an asshole.

I don't care if you're an asshole, but I don't recall you making a bunch of dumbshit threads just to argue with people like you seem to be lately. You take anyone disagreeing with you at all or asking questions and then respond calling them idiots and then spend the rest of the thread arguing little points that don't matter when you're still just arguing your own personal opinion.

Plus, there is no, correct in this situation. You're arguing about something you find stupid, that frankly is one of the single dumbest things I've seen people argue about, especially considering the ridiculous number of worthwhile stupid shit you could actually take issue with in sports.

Its to show that both the team and the player are on good terms and there's mutual respect. This is not a difficult concept, and considering your propensity for pointless symbolism in other facets of your life, I'm not sure why its such a difficult concept for you to grasp.

I think it is stupid. Others may think otherwise, but their reasons for thinking that way are stupid or non-existent. That being said, I actually have not argued in this thread about "retiring as a <whatever>". I have simply said it was stupid. Others have argued dumb points with me (the whole bit about Montana, Rice, etc.) while failing to support their positions and failing to answer the actual question in the OP.

You have also failed to answer the question in the OP.

people who care way too much about sports, and have created a society that cares way too much about sports, are to blame. therefore, you are to blame

If I created the problem, then it is part of my duty to help solve it.

This thread is the first step.

Why? Do league rules require that he retire "with" or "from" a certain team?

MotionMan

I thought it had to do with the HoF rules. I.e., retire with the old team so you can go into the HoF as a member of that team.

I could be wrong. I've never even been to the HoF.

You're wrong. The football HOF does not induct you as a player from a certain team.

The baseball HOF puts a cap on your head, but you have no choice as to what team it will be and it will not necessarily be your last team.

Didn't Jerry Rice and Roger Craig (and probably others) retire as 49ers?

Yes. And as I said above, I thought and still think that was stupid, too.

My opinion on this does not change because it involves a player or team I like or dislike - It is just stupid.

Hehe, I was going to mention uh..."Jerry Rice?"

But assumed that had been mentioned earlier, and I seem to recall it setting off a heated discussion.

Meh, I'm sure Manning will retire a Colt and I'm all for it.

I hope he retires a Brown just for shits.

:D

oh , wait.... :hmm:

This makes me wonder: when a guy like Terrel Owens retires, who does he retire with? ...who would actually want him, now?

Because it doesn't alter their career in anyway in the HoF, it is just for press and attention or some sort of mental or emotional check list, nothing more.

If Jerry Rice didn't "retire" as a 49er and opened a business in SF, would everyone suddenly not go there because he didn't end his career there? No don't be stupid. Same could be said for anyone else that had a storied career in another city and came back to do the same thing.

Oh shit--I just realized that you forgot to update when LT retired as a Charger earlier this year.

They can just hold a press conference (at the old team's facilities, if they'd like) to announce their retirement, without the "retiring as" idiocy.

It's just a dude retiring from the NFL, not sure why that bothers you so much. You have nothing to do with it. Calm down.

08/28/12 UPDATE:

Brian Westbrook to retire as Eagle

And the stupidity marches on...

And my original quest remains unfulfilled:

"I task you, ATOT, find the earliest reference to this happening so I know who to direct my venom."

MotionMan

The first I can recall doing it was Eugene Lockhart with the Cowboys, I think in 92 or 93? But I'm pretty sure he wasn't the first to do it. It was relatively unusual then.
