So it is a league rule that bona-fide stars have to retire with a team. Link?

And, yes, I think it was stupid for Joe Montana to retire "as a 49er". He could have just held a press conference (in the Bay area, even) to announce his retirement without the fake "as a 49er" 1-day contract B.S.

Then the 49ers can't retire the number, have a celebration to retire him at the field and put him in the home town Hall of Fame. You make no sense

How are those things related at all to "retiring as a 49er"?

Before these "retiring as a <team>" things, teams could not retire the numbers of players who left the team?

You make no sense.

There's a lot of stupid shit going on in sports at any given moment. Sorry but Fred Taylor's retirement doesn't even sniff the top of the list.

Proof you are no 49'ers fan if you don't want to see him as a 49'er for life.

Are you saying that if Joe Montana did not sign a 1-day contract with the 49ers so he could "retire as a 49er", the 49ers could not have retired his number or honor him on the field?

Really? Someone better tell Hugh McElhenny.

i think wade boggs set the precedent:

Hall of Fame plaque cap logo controversy

Before his retirement, Boggs was plagued by newspaper reports that the expansion Devil Rays gave him financial compensation in return for selecting a Devil Rays cap for his plaque at the Baseball Hall of Fame, though he has denied that any such condition was part of his contract.[15] In light of those reports (and other rumors that teams were offering number retirement, money, or organizational jobs in exchange for the cap designation) the Hall decided in 2001 to change its practice of deferring to players' wishes regarding cap logo selection, and reinforced the Hall's authority to determine with which cap the player would be depicted. Boggs is wearing a Boston cap on his plaque.

Nobody cares what you think. You're one piddly little fan... one of millions. How does this affect you in any way at all? Who touched your bunghole in such a way that you feel the need to bitch and moan about everything, especially the things that don't even have anything to do with you.

What is it with Broncos fans and this issue?

I like it when former 49er stars come back and retire with the team. It's nice.

You do have a point in the sense that it's stupid as there is really no reason behind it, it's all for show and means nothing, but that reasoning could be applied to all of pro sports. This retiring thing happens to be one aspect of pro sports that I like more than most. It gives me a warm fuzzy feeling.

I would be interested to find out who did it first. Wonder if this sort of thing started with free agency.

I guess they just want their official last team to be the one they retire with? I don't see the problem, it's not stupid at all. It's stupid to get worked up over it.

They have Saint Elway to lead the way in moral superiority amongst all franchises, his arms anointed by the Coors-laden spunk of several million fans, the great Elway remains untainted by the burden of being traded away without his consent, and thus no such controversy stains his involvement in this hallowed issue.

He stupidly and uselessly retired as a 49er, as did Roger Craig and Joe Montana. They were all stupid and useless acts ("...and we're just the men to do it!!!")

MotionMan

I don't get it, though. Would you rather see him as a Raider in the HoF?

WTF are you talking about? First of all, he WAS a Raider (and a 49er and a Seahawk). Second, under your logic, he would have been enshrined as a Seahawk. Third, you are not enshrined in the NFL HOF with a team logo on your bust.

You clearly have no idea what you are talking about.

With whom did Jerry Rice retire?

:hmm:

IIRC correctly if MM wanted his way Rice would have been a Bronco when he retired. I thought he went from Oakland to Denver in the off season and retired before the season started. I may be wrong though.
