I agree, debt forgiveness without fixing the system just means we have to do this all over again.

That being said, a revamp of the student loan system is currently politically impossible and so I'm not entirely against it as this will be a tremendous help to a ton of people. It's only a band-aid though, like you say.
You need an act of Congress and state governments to fix costs. However, beyond the forgiveness aspect, the Biden administration also revamped some of the repayment rules, so it's not like future borrowers are being left completely in the cold.

Yea. It really is up to the parents to teach their kids about going into debt. Even if it is for an education. I have talked with a few 18 year olds this past summer. When I askeed them if they were going to college, not one person said that were going. They all brought up that they didn't want debt. They talked about going to trade school instead. I only talked to a few young people, so its not a reliable source of data. But, I wonder if the internet, specifically YouTube, has played or is playing a part in the decision to not attend college. There are a ton of videos on YouTube warning young people about the high risk of college and student debt. Also, there are a few social media influencers who are warning highschool students about the high cost of going to college. And that it just isn't worth the cost.

I know people say trade schools a lot and in some cases that's great, but I think people seriously underestimate the level of restrictions that trade groups put on workers as well. While it's true these jobs pay well and there's a lot of demand for them, one of the reasons they pay well in a lot of places is those in a particular trade act as a cartel and restrict membership. So...if everyone went to trade school a lot of people are probably going to get locked out.

This is more a condemnation of how we've changed how higher education is paid for/what it costs rather than that trade schools are intrinsically superior. The trades may be a better fit for some people than college but they should be the ones who get to decide that not the ruinous expense we've imposed on obtaining a degree.

Next up in 20 years when we've managed to overload those positions:

These people deserve their declining wages. If they didn't want to make shit money they should have gone to college.

Why do you hate social justice? We need more equitable distribution of free degrees to counter the systemic cost of higher education.
Did this sound in your head like a gotcha or something? In case you missed it I'll repeat - the reason why people don't take your suggestions is because they are stupid. If you think this resembles Democratic policy positions then you're either stupid too or you consume too much right wing media.

Regardless, any thoughts about your forthcoming apologies? You seem to owe quite a few and I know you're a person of character and are enough of an adult to admit when you're wrong. Right?

The only one who owes an apology is old man Biden for not going far enough to address the social ills plaguing this country like the millions and millions of illegals he let into the country who do yet have a free law, science or engineering degree the dems owe them.

Plus it's generally pretty rough work and not something you're going to do until you retire, from what I understand.

I mean seriously, we can just set up DDCs (degree distribution centers) all over the country and illegals can just show up and get a free degree of their choice from the University of Democrat Handouts.

Fridays special is a Doctorate in Mathmatics. First come, first served!

You can do better than this. It’s not clever or funny and you’re trying way too hard.

And, what about the people who went to Trump University? Do they get debt relief...

Or, what about the folks who attended Rich Dad/Poor Dad University? But, why college? Those instagram influencers are telling me that if I buy their $2000 course on bitcoin I too can make millions! MILLIONS!!!

Yeah the PSLF program was modified to include more repayment plans. Already applied for mine.

But the Biden vote buying scheme spits in his face as well as all the other responsible people who paid off all their loans without a government handout.

First off it would be a terrible vote buying scheme, not only does it target the young who are the least likely to vote, and those that do vote are already going to vote for him. If he wanted to buy votes you would think he would go after the ones that probably won't vote for him. Maybe loan forgiveness for trailer homes and oversized trucks? Perhaps the government could subsidize a free carton of Pall Malls for every confederate flag purchase?

And second it does not spit in anyone's face. One person being helped does not harm the ones that were not. Society is not a zero sum game. The rising tide lifts all boats and all that. We want educated people, our economy requires it. Our society benefits from it. Our future depends on it.

20 years? I feel certain that some of our more conservatives commenters will forget that they are supposed to be anti-education right now and say that in a different thread in a few days. Bootstraps and all don't you know.

Just another class warfare thing. Those who paid are mad with those who may pay less, or not required to pay at all.
What people should be mad about is the unfairness in the tax system. People like Trump and Bezos get to spend their tax money on overthrowing the government or building spaceships. However, you the middle class have to pay your taxes to the government. No coup d'état for you, no mission to Mars for you either.
And people are mad simply because someone "might" get an education, at a discount.

No wonder the middle class continually votes against their best interest. The forces that be do a pretty good job at dividing us against one another. And, somehow we are convinced election cycle after election cycle that we are not deserving. Whip me more massa... I likes it lots.

Why doesn't Biden just give people degrees? Didn't finish high school but want an MBA? Kamala and Joe have your back!

Well given that academic grades are predicted fairly-well by parental income, just award everyone academic qualifications based on how wealthy their parents are, and skip all that time-consuming and resource-intensive education and examinations and stuff. It's fun to pretend the system is a meritocracy, but it's a lot more efficient to just be open about its plutocratic nature. Saves on resources that way.

That's pretty-much what the Tories here tried to do during the pandemic - awarding students exam grades based on the past record of their school, which is essentially a proxy for the social-class and income bracket of the school intake.

Right now Alaskan crab fisherman are begging for socialism. Should we help them? If we do are you going to be mad that we helped them and not you? Do yo benefit in ways others don't? Just something to think about when getting angry about this student loan aid.

I'm on SSDI and got sick towards the end of going to a 1 year trade school. I have a student loan that I couldn't pay back. I get less than $1000 a month and since I defaulted on the loan they take everything over $750 a month. Starting Jan. 1st that is what my take home will be once again. This aid package would help my situation greatly. Otherwise I'm stuck with $750 a month for around two more years paying off the loan. That's normally fine but the price of everything has skyrocketed the last 10 years and that $750 a month doesn't budge. I can't even afford a car and am a burden to family.

You know, I feel your pain. My brother is on SSDI because he lost his vision in both eyes to glaucoma in his 60s. He was making $100,000 a year in IT but now lives on less than a 3rd of that. He has to led around by holding on to someone's shoulder when he goes out. I've been with him on this journey and have learned a lot.

And here you are trying to do well for yourself despite life's setbacks. Did you try to get a Pell grant? That might have helped when you were in school.

I wish you well.

You do know Republicans’ stated intention for reducing inflation is to cut social security, right?
