No way would I use one of these as a netbook/laptop when the screen is the same angle as the keyboard and would suck using two hands to type.

I wouldn't buy one even if it was cool, but since its not I plan to laugh more at those who do.

You know being a kindle owner and reading paper material are not mutually exclusive. I see people reading in direct sunlight all the time. In fact, I think I see more people reading with kindles than with regular books ! I guess NYC is just that much more advanced than where you live.

i live in california
ny folks are posers😉

"At an invitation only event Apple has released their new MP3 player called the iPod. iPod is the size of a deck of cards. 2.4" wide by 4" tall by .78" thick 6.5 ounces. 5 GB HDD, 10 hr battery life, charged via FireWire. Works as a firewire drive as well. Works in conjunctions with iTunes 2. Here are Live updates". No wireless. Less space than a nomad. Lame.

All I'm sayin is that a 10" multitouch internet surfin, app playin device ain't such a horrible thing. I'll be buying one, because I'll be able to use it to drag to work, surf the net and trade stocks during my breaks.

My current employer has terminated 3 people for using the internet on work PC's in the last month.

I can use one tethered to my Cyanogen ROM'd G1 and not have to add yet another monthly bill to my expenses. It'll replace my heavily modded Dell Mini 9. I already carry a man bag for my lunch & gadgets.

As far as my being an Apple investor, that's subject to change at a moment's notice, it doesn't make me a fan boy.

From my point of view, this thing kicks the holy living shit outta my first laptop:

Amstrad PPC640 (UK 1988) Amstrad tried to make a real low cost portable PC. This is a really funny shaped PC. It can be folded together and carried around with the handle on the short end. The screen is a 9" flip up LCD with poor contrast and probably the reason this computer never made any big success. It is powered by 10 standard D-cells or a external power supply. One 720 K 3½" floppy drive on the right. Standard full size PC-keyboard. External monitor could be connected. There was also a PPC512 model with a lighter color case, otherwise same as 640.

Didn't you hear Lord Jobs? They're crusty and icky and run clunky old PC software. They don't do anything better because they're lo-res and slow lolololol

Yeah, my 1366x768 netbook screen is low res compared to the ultra awesome 1024x768 of an iPad!
Oh wait...

I'm a huge apple fan. I own a iphone, 3 ipods, 2 macbook pros, even that stupid expensive 24 inch cinema display, but this iPad thing doesn't make any sense at all.

No flash support and if it still holds the video file restrictions of it's iPhone OS I won't be able to throw on anything but video files converted to Apple's format specs.

So it's great for watching videos...if you buy your videos from iTunes.

The form factor and touchscreen refinements (much like on the iPhone) are to be commended though.

I could say more, but it's all been said in this thread. Seriously, if this sells in it's first iteration to a significant degree I'll facepalm.

On the other hand if it had a dual mode display like I've seen tech demoed (switches from LED backlit to e-ink when in book mode) it could have been a Kindle killer. Speaking from experience with both, I like the e-ink display more for long reading.

One More thing...extra cost for the 3G capability (+ you need a $30 plan on top if it)...lol-tastic.

How is the form factor to be commended? It's a freaking tablet. There are only two form factors that they come in, and it picked one of them. Hardly commendable.

And it sucks for watching videos: 4:3 screen aspect ratio. No thanks.

err, what were they supposed to do? It's not just a video playback device.

what do you expect? well thought out criticisms?😉

He stated it was good for video playback, I refuted that.
Arstechnica also have an article up in which they criticise the aspect ratio as being unsuitable for web content and books.
A book isn't 4:3, or 1.25:1, it's usually closer to 1.5:1, where movies are typically 1.77:1, so a 4:3 screen isn't good for books and it's terrible for movies.
I have a 16:10 monitor, and swiveling it to portrait mode is better for viewing lots of content on a web page than landscape mode, and the iPad can switch display mode depending on orientation as well.

So what is 4:3 good for? Tell me why criticism of a 4:3 screen is not well thought out by telling me why a 4:3 screen is good. Some examples of where a 4:3 screen is more useful than something less square.

Video is a little more mixed. I don't need a super-high-resolution on a portable screen, so 1024x768 is probably more than fine, but in this widescreen era the decision to go with a pure 4:3 screen is somewhat disappointing. The reality is that just about anything I would watch on this screen is going to be letterboxed pretty hard. When you only have a 9.7" screen to begin with, it's hard to give up so much of it to black bars. The video-out options are a little lame, but I'm having trouble thinking of times when I'll want to plug an iPad into my HD TV. Not a huge deal, because it was never meant to be a primary video player, but it could be better.

How about a comic book? This is a real geek killer app. E-ink isn't a player here without color, and laptops are pretty marginal as readers. Laptop have keyboards that get in the way, they aren't easy to rotate for optimal screen orientation, and they're either pretty heavy or not so great in the screen department (dinky 7" screen netbooks need not apply!). Could this be the comic book reader some of us have dreamed of? Sort of. Once again that 4:3 screen rears its ugly head, and makes me scratch mine. Maybe you couldn't nail a perfect piece-of-paper ratio, but couldn't you have come closer, Apple?

its not. if you had a 10" 16:10 monitor you'd see the problem, its just too narrow. wide screen takes on a different character at such small sizes. 4:3 is for web surfinb apps and for usability in either orientation. wide for viewing webpages in portrait only works on a much larger and higher resolution screen. and books can easily be reformated to fit a 4:3 screen just fine. it doesn't matter that its more square, it only matters that the text isn't so narrow that becomes like reading a column. simply the handling of such a narrow pad would be more difficult. it would simply be awkward.

I'm gonna go against the flow and predict this will be a huge success. The reason is pretty simple: It is the right size for what it's designed to do. All those saying it won't fit in a pocket or it's just a larger iPhone are completely missing the point. That point is: Would you be willing to Read a Book from an iPhone or something small enough to fit in your pocket?

I highly doubt it.

Apple is going to dominate this Market until Competitors adopt a similar sized device. Mark my words.

And that's without considering what might come out based on an ARM CPU.

wut?

If people want to read a book, they'll buy a book or an e-reader (if those things had internet access, they'd be a giant success).

The typical tech guru is disappointed, the typical buyer of this device will never see or hear the criticism of the iPad.

Think of it as an iPod Touch for old people 😀
