Good movie overall but I have some criticisms.

1. I was disappointed to see the recycled plot.
2. Phasma was a letdown. I would have expected more fight in her.
3. Kylo Ren is far too much of an emo wimp.
4. The discovery of the light sabre was very forced.

Also, I'm going to see it again with the wife but I might recommend 2D. 3D not necessary for this movie.

I found the 3D to be necessary for this movie because it played at 7:00pm rather than 7:30pm Thursday. No way in hell I was going to be watching previews and commercials and shit for another half hour while another group is watching fucking STAR WARS. :colbert:

Will re-watch in 2D.

What makes you think it destroyed their fleet?

This I don't get either as their fleet would had been in space around said planets and I suppose if they were close to the planet when it exploded they could had been but we never saw it.

The problem is there are 2 forms of the alliance, republic and resistance, and they never explained things very well so movie viewers assumed the few x-wings they had was all was left of the good guys from the original films.

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Destruction_of_the_Hosnian_system

After gaining Supreme Leader Snoke's permission to fire the superweapon, Hux chose the heart of the New Republic to demonstrate the power of the First Order in an attempt to wipe out the "illegitimate" government of the New Republic in one fell swoop. The test was a success and Hosnian Prime, home of the Galactic Senate, all other astronomical bodies in the system, and an unknown percentage of the New Republic fleet were annihilated by the First Order's superweapon.[1]

It doesn't say how much of the fleet was lost but we have been led to believe it was a lot. They could have done a much better job of showing that in the movie.

This is basically the case according to the novelization.

Everyone give it a read if you're interested in what finer points couldn't be crammed into the movie.

this plot is kinda similar to the Naruto anime. The main antagonist emo kid Kylo Ren (Sasuke) must sever his ties to his loved ones to attain the greatest power. Snoke is actually Darth Plagueis (Orochimaru), who will take over Kylo's body when he is powerful enough (that is how Darth Plagueis cheats death). While the person he grew up with as a child, Rey Skywalker (Naruto) will do anything to bring him back

"I used to be pretty good with a lightsaber until I took a bowcaster bolt to the knee." - Ren

Also, I think the reason Ren decided not to use the force or just kill Finn immediately is because it's the first time he's seen another lightsaber in who knows how long. Thus also the reason he just looked at it laying in the snow for a bit before he went to claim it. A little bit of practice, especially against someone much less skilled would do worlds for his ego.

They're not twins, and the Jedi Order was destroyed before Luke, lol.

Rey exhibited a natural ability to pilot something she'd never flown before, who does this sound like? Who were insanely great pilots from Star Wars? Only Anakin and Luke, not Solo/Leia. Rey and Kylo are cousins, which also explains why the light saber went to Rey (and called out to her earlier) - it belonged to her father and his father. She is the direct lineage. Disney also made it clear that Star Wars is a story about the Skywalker Jedi family, not the Solo's. Try not to think too hard about this, JJ made this movie for the average layman and his kids to understand, not PhD doctoral students.

EDIT: I will say, however, that the story would be much more compelling if Kylo/Rey were brother/sister. However, you would have to explain why Solo didn't recognize her, nor Leia to a lesser extent (Leia faking it to protect her daughter? ehhhh, lame). Maybe Leia was pregnant and then Han left before he knew she was? This would also be lame as opposed to a story where Luke banged another Jedi chick which is why she is so much more powerful than Kylo - she would have the DNA of 2 Jedi's vs only one like Luke/Anakin/Leia.

Hey, genius: Leia and Luke are siblings. They had the same parents. All of your arguments for Luke as the parent also apply to Leia as the parent.

Rey carried the show.
R2's sudden involvement seemed way too convenient.
Finn was pretty good.
The top gun pilot seemed almost superfluous at times.
Why did they bring in those Indonesian guys from The Raid? They didn't really do anything in the movie. It would have been awesome to see some badass martial arts, just because.
Freema Agyeman did even less, but she looked beautiful doing that nothing.

This guy's review nails it. I agree with pretty much everything he has to say in his review.

Good movie overall, with great new characters in Rey and Finn, but it re-used too many plot points, the camaraderie between the old guard and new characters were not really there, Kylo doesn't seem very imposing, and even the score is a bit lacking.

A good popcorn movie, but not a masterpiece. A safe re-introduction to the Star Wars franchise.

And now because of Ep VII events Disney can get really edgy :sneaky:

Good movie. I was entertained the whole way, which is what I wanted.

Plenty of things aren't perfect, but it was just as good as the original. People complain about plot holes like the originals were flawless, but they had their own problems.

The Millennium Falcon abandoned in a junkyard as scrap in Jakku. Han Solo and Leia separated?
Not sure how different now are the story lines from the EU. :\

Hey genius, Leia isn't a formal Jedi and environmental stresses are now found to be transgenerational - hence why "The Force" is so much stronger in Luke and that would be passed down. Also, Solo isn't a Jedi, so it's only 1 parent with "The Force" DNA vs 2 if Luke banged another Jedi woman and the result was Rey. Hence why Rey comically beat Kylo without any formal training, they both have The Force from the Skywalker DNA tree so why is Rey's so much stronger? Use your brain. Rey would be much more powerful because she is the offspring of 2 Jedi's, not 1. But Disney will probably cash out and make them brother and sister by either explaining that Han's memory was wiped (lame) or Leia was pregnant with Rey after Han left (double lame).
Summary: It would be much better if Rey's amplified power was due to being the child of 2 Jedi's and not because "girlpower!" or "the Light side is more powerful than the Dark!" BS.

You are way, way overthinking this.

Just saw the movie. Here is my take...

I got the same feeling about "Force Awakens" that I got when I first watched "Independence Day"*, it was a very fun/entertaining movie but I know I shouldn't think about it too much or it completely falls apart.

-KeithP

*I am not saying those two movies are of the same caliber.

Perhaps it is their "passion"? It's something that I once had when I stood in line six times to see the original 38 years ago. I was thinking that I had seen the wrong movie as I did not see what others are seeing when I watched the movie. I saw a little humor, some very strange casting choices and very little "heart". I cannot reconcile what I saw with all the raving.

I've learned one thing through this thread ... I am no longer the target demographic ...
