Downloaded and played for the first time in at least a year... it's utterly confusing as to how to do anything!

I can appreciate huge complexity but "the basics" should be logical and straightforward... other than running down some hallways to visit shops and look at things, summon our ship and fly around the station for a while - we just didn't know what to DO. 🙁

Squadron 42 is what I'm waiting eagerly for... something single-player with clear objectives. Of course, if I c an ever figure out an online component where I can join some missions or go solo mining without being constantly mobbed by dozens of other players/pirates, I could get into it.

I feel very much the same way. Occasionally I try to read up on the game, but way too many details. I then log in and have a new, but empty hanger and not exactly sure what to do. Hopefully once the game releases, it's not a steep learning curve to get started.

I'm not too current either but in the past you'd find a hanger option inside your star citizen profile. You add the ships to your hanger there.
You're in the AT Ballers right Kent?

Even though it's only 20 hours (supposedly), I'm thinking SQ42 is going to have huge replay value. Tons of different NPC interactions that could be different depending numerous things.

It's also important to note that when you finish SQ42.. there's the PU to go have fun in then. It's not like if you beat SQ42 and are done with it, that 'that's it'. You can just take your fun to Star Citizen and play indefinitely.

I can understand that. The thing you have to keep in mind is that in alpha it doesn't make sense to spend a lot of effort on player education. Most of the backers that are running the code know what they're getting into....buggy alpha code that needs testing. If you step away for awhile and come back, you're going to be lost. Best place to start (and CIG doesn't really tell you this) is the patch notes. ALWAYS read the patch notes before you launch the code. They're detailed and worth the effort.

There is going to be a learning curve, no question about it. All simulator games have a learning curve. It can and will be steep at times, more so depending on what hardware/software you are using, since the game is thankfully (and rightly) attempting to usable for any/all control peripherals (keyboard/mouse/gamepad/1-2 flightsticks/footpedals/aux screens/aux control modules/etc...). So everyone will have to spend some real time getting accustomed to how you have mapped out your controls. And on top of that, you may also use things like VoiceAttack and similar for many things. You will need to get accustomed to it to get the most out of some things.

You will also want/need to spend a couple hours learning how to fly. Testing the control limits with the ship, and how it affects your pilot performing certain manurers and learning tactically what is the right thing to do in the situation you encounter.

That's pretty much the direction I went. Melted Aquila package, UEE Exploration pack, and my 300i. However, I have to wait 24 hours so I can melt it and do it again. I forgot to use my 10% off coupon.

Fixed as of today. Reclaimed $50 of store credit with the coupon. I can just let it sit there for the time being, I guess.

Someone noticed that you can see the ring shaped space station in low orbit (that they pass by in the demo right before entering the atmosphere).. you can see it from the ground.

That draw distance though.....

Correction: That 'lack of' draw distance though.. (CIG said they disabled any draw distance so pop in is strictly due to insufficient hardware).

imagine being on a planet or moon and watching a massive space battle take place above you...drool.

That would be awesome, but lets not get ahead of ourselves. Something like that would require data from a distant space battle being sent to your client (i.e. types, trajectories, and positions of projectiles). That's something the network LOD is going to have to figure out so it doesn't saturate clients or connections with data they don't need. Hopefully they're thinking of that with their network refactor.

I'm sure they could use tricks it wouldn't have to be line of sight

Chris said there's no draw distance limitations, so I'm assuming that, just like in the pic I posted in #6072, that if its in line of sight, then you should be able to see it, even if its far away. I think the problem with the netcode lies not just in distance, but in usefulness. Maybe we could see a space battle going on from planetside, but the netcode shouldn't be sending us data about what suits and armor the players in the ships are wearing.

By "no draw distance," he means just that. The engine doesn't have a distance value that it doesn't draw something beyond that. It's quite impressive. However, that's dependent on the client being aware that something is there, and that's up to the network LOD. The example in the picture you posted is a static object the local client would know about without network data being required.

I'm not saying it won't happen. I'm just saying to temper expectations as there's still technical things they're working out.

I just watched the gameplay presentation over, and I can't wait to have those Dragonflies and Rovers in our hands. Going to load up into my Connie and do some driving!

Heh... kind of you to offer. I'm a complete, total noob who won't be much use to any kind of team... at least for a while.
Any really good how-to videos to get started and master the basics... maybe even start earning some currency to start buying ship upgrades, etc?
