If you get 19-60 fps in PU, that is quite good at this point.

Also, at which resolution?
Running at 1920*1080. The 1080 had the same freezing and stuttering with the same frames rates as the 970.

Is this game massively CPU intensive?

From my limited experience its massively intensive on everything. I can barely fly but I can't fight. I can walk around the hanger pretty easily but the ports are much more laggy.

Here's my position on the Terrapin (I argued this several times on the CIG forums today): it's impossible to compare it to other hulls or assess it's worth when we have no idea what components come with our hulls (or their capabilities). The Terrapin might damn well have the best Chimera scanning suite in the game. The DUR might have crap. The Terrapin might have the most powerful and efficient powerplant in the game allowing it to scan AND keep it's shields full charged. The DUR might have weaker power plant that requires shutting down the shields in order to appropriately power the scanners. We just don't know.

You're right - when these ship systems are actually in place, the Terrapin might shine. It might out-explore the DUR in every category except cargo (and having enough beds for the crew.. 😉 ). It might be able to land on a harsh planet or fly through an anomaly that the DUR's shields and armor can't withstand.

There's no indication that the DUR can do anything C&C or recon related, so it definitely has that advantage.

That's why I said I'm just going to wait until I see it in action. CIG is billing it as THE starter explorer for those who want to take that on purely as their career (and I do) and mention several times that deep space exploration is its strongest suit, so it is relevant to my interests. I was just a bit disappointed at some of the design decisions (which are always subject to change), since I'm an exploration nut.

On a positive note, CIG says they choose concept ships when they want to start introducing a game mechanic (like mining with the Prospector), so maybe that means we'll see more in the way of exploration mechanics in upcoming builds. We also know that the Carrack is getting resources next after the Cat is complete.

So framerates in the ptu last night were great! I played for about an hour, and it kept steady at 23-35 and even got up to 45 fps sometimes. There was a lot of people on the server and everyone was talking about how good it was running. To the point where several guys were spawning their biggest ships at Grim at the same time to try and get the server to hiccup.

Best I've seen the PU run in a long time.

I thought that Aurora ES, Mustang Beta and 315P are starter explorer ships.

I believe what they mean is purely dedicated-role "starter" ships - as in they aren't converted vessels but purpose built for a certain career (the Prospector being an example). I don't think "starter" was a good term for them to use at all - - they're really more like Tier 1 dedicated role ships.

I'm guessing it will go something like the progression of anomaly detectors in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. A 315p might have something like a Bear or Echo Detector, and the Terrapin might be like the Veles (I guess only STALKER fans are going to have any idea what I'm talking about).

Yeah, you can use the Echo Detector to get your feet wet, but if you want to be dedicated to navigating anomalies you better have a Veles.

Which leads me again to why I'm a bit disappointed with the Terrapin as a long-range explorer design, as even the Mustang Beta seems to have a more well-suited interior to such pursuits (at least from what we've seen).

I think the Terrapin is going to be well suited to LOOK into deep space. Not necessarily TRAVEL into deep space. And that's the distinction I think most people are missing (and they're missing it because CIG's marketing/information sucks as usual).

Wow. So it's not just me. This sucks because it makes the game almost unplayable.

The FPS issue in the PTU is a result of the current network code (which at the moment is a worked over version of the CryEngine code they started with). It doesn't matter what machine you have, your frames will be limited at this point to the range you're seeing.

They have been at work for months completely rewriting it, and we'll likely see it introduced in 3.0. It's such a serious issue, that I'm pretty sure 3.0 will never make it out the door unless they have the new network code in place.

They seemed to have done something with the latest PTU, because it was running amazingly well (relatively) last night. Busy server (head count in chat showed at least 20), and many of the players said the server had been stable for 5+ hours and that they've been running smoothly the entire time. Except for a few hiccups (very brief), i never dipped below 25 and often got into the upper 40's. It was remarkably better.

I'm on an i7 4970k w/970gtx

That's very nearly the specs of my last system. I think I had a Q6600, and a GTX 260. Oh, well I guess I read the video card part backwards if you're referring to an R9 model.

I jumped to devil's canyon...i5 4690k. At the time I was running off of a HDD and had 8 GB of DDR3 1600, with a MSI R9 290 card. I was able to run (at 1080p) the original incarnation of arena commander. I have 32GB of RAM and Windows 10 now, but everything else is the same. I wonder how this will handle?

Last summer, I went from a Q6600 with a GTX 275 to the build in my sig. Talk about a change... The old build is still kicking around as the wife's PC for some light gaming.

Haha I started with a GTX260, changed to the 280x to mess with SC
