Star Citizen: Chris Robert`s new space sim (the Wing Commander guy)

I played 2.5.0 for a few hours Friday and Saturday and then I melted my game package (again) to load up on more LTI tokens (Argo). Just in case. This system is ridiculous.

I have no idea what you just said. Not a clue.
I think I need to actually start playing this game.

He traded in his game package for store credit. Then he bought lots of the new small (and cheap) ship, the Argo. The reason he did this is that it has LTI (lifetime insurance) and any ship he upgrades to from the Argo will keep that LTI. Cheap ships with LTI therefore can make any other available ship have LTI, hence why they're called LTI tokens.

OK, I got in, finally. Had to make a user.cfg and copy data from some dude on Youtube. Now it runs at a playable framerate.
All I could do was run around the tiny space port and look at other players. Everything seems washed out. Gonna need to find the setting for image softening.

They went a little overboard in 2.5.0 with the lighting, but I still think that overall the objects in the game look better now.

Regarding LTI tokens: there are a few more years until the game will be released and maybe at one point I would want to have some. Since you can't know what will be available in the future (for instance maybe they will only sell $200 concept ships from now on) and since it costs nothing to get them with Store Credits (so they are available in your account to be bought back at any time - until the game reaches beta stage), I purchased them now.

The ship insurance topic is one you're going to run into every 5 minutes if you frequent SC forums of any sort. Just so you understand the mechanic:
  • If your ship is destroyed in the released game, if it is insured, you will receive a replacement. If not, you'll have to save up enough to buy the ship again.
  • CIG has stated that in-game expense for insurance will be minimal.
  • When you become a backer and pledge for a ship, it comes with some level of insurance (3 mos., 6 mos., etc...)
  • If you pledge for a ship when it's just in the "concept" phase, it comes with Lifetime Insurance (LTI) as a perk. This was also given to early backers before a certain date for all ship pledges.
  • If you let the insurance lapse on a pledge ship and it is destroyed, it will not be replaced.
That last point is where the forum fun begins, and also the general SC backer obsession with LTI. Hands have been wrung and vitriol has been spewed over the chance of losing a ship that was "bought" with real money. I personally think the whole LTI thing was one of the worst decisions CIG has made for backers, and all it's done is created a bunch of unneeded drama and criticism.

I personally don't care about LTI, and I'm not worried about losing any ships I've pledged for (if any video game makes me worry about anything, I have no interest in playing it). I'm sure there will be numerous Bitching Betty warnings in the game if I have a ship that lapses on insurance, and I simply won't fly it until I go through the incredibly complex, error prone and arduous task of clicking a "renew insurance" button in the HUD. 😉

I understand a lot of folks just don't want to worry about it, or want to maximize their in-game earnings. LTI tokens are a good way for them to get that, and heck - they're still pledging for the game and that's good all-around for the development.

All of that mess is one reason why if people ask me if they should "buy" a ship, my response has always been "PLEDGE to back the game at the amount you're most comfortable with. Nothing is guaranteed for early backing a project."

I've pledged for additional ships because I believe in the project, have gotten to this point over 100 hrs of fun with the alpha, and believe it's worth diverting funds from my entertainment budget, so it gives me a chance to play around with these things in the meantime while waiting for the official release.

Completely agree. And this decision is going to haunt this project for a long time.

I wouldn't mind if they took care of it by just giving all pledges during the Alpha LTI. Until then, I'll play the meta game.

Especially when LTI can still be obtained at no extra cost for stand-alone ships.

I agree that all ships bought with real money should have LTI (including ships from game packages).

In fact, the obsession with LTI comes from the insane ship prices (I am talking about prices in real money). The fact that ships are so expensive also leads to another concern: pay to win.

Wait, what? I have 3 months insurance on my ship (mustang alpha), if I crash or destroy it after my insurance lapses then i lose the money I've invested for the ship I paid for?

also after upgrading my new rig, gameplay is smooth and i get between 20 - upper 40's and sometimes low 50 fps in game so at least i'm content for now. hopefully this improves.

I really need to watch some beginner video too. sometimes i'm lost trying to figure out things, and my joystick is definitely not setup to do anything, which makes this so frustrating.

You will have to make sure that you renew the insurance before it expires.

how do you do that? don't tell me you have to pay out of pocket again?
We'll have to pay with in-game money (UEC). Insurance is not yet implemented in the game so the cost of insurance is only speculation at this point. Initially CIG said that the cost of insurance will be low, but we'll have to wait and see.

I am sure that insurance will be proportional with ship cost. So even a low percentage for insurance fee could end up as a hefty amount for expensive ships. Hence the safe approach to get expensive ships with LTI. Even with LTI, any upgrades and cargo will have to be insured separately (or risk going without insurance on them).

I wouldn't mind it either - I think that's what they should do at this point. I think a vocal group of veteran backers might, though.

The "pay to win" scenario is something I don't feel is a concern, as what will people with big expensive ships "win?" I don't believe SC is set up in a way that will allow for player-influenced economy or organizational or political control of systems. If someone has a bunch of disposable cash and buys an Idris, all they're saving themselves is time, and it doesn't have any effect on my game.

Even if a big org gets together and buys a bunch of Hull-Es, along with a fleet of Javelins to escort them, they don't even put a dent in my gameplay, because CIG has already stated players will not be able to control trading and commerce.

I have a feeling SC is going to end up being far more like a multi-player space adventure game than an EVE-style MMO.

I think a lot of people might be disappointed with that, but I would be pretty happy with it.

I was thinking more about the ship combat than about gathering resources. As the game stands now, entry level ships do not have a chance against more expensive ships. And this gap is widening with every patch.

@Linux23 one other important thing to note is that i believe it is 3 months of in-game time, not 3 months of real life time. the game-time to real-time scale has not been set yet. but if you only play a few hours a week, 3 month insurance will last a lot longer than 3 real time months, and if you go a couple months without logging in, your insurance timer will not be counting down.

I'd like to get my $125 back at this point. This game will never be released. Estimated delivery date of Nov. 2014 my ass.

They never promised to deliver what they're currently working on by 2014. The entire date/scope changed after the successful crowd sourcing campaign. They promised a $10M house for a $10M budget, but ended up with $100M and are now working on a $100M house that will take longer to build.

It's important to note.. Their frankfurt studio didn't even get up and running until July 2015.

If you want a refund, that's great. Head over to reddit.com/r/starcitizen_refunds and follow their advice.

Just know the 'it will never be done and arguments about 2014 promises' are mostly going to fall on deaf ears, as the company has been very open, vocal, and public about the change of plans that happened due to the crowd funding success. And even if the game isn't finished until 2019, they're still well within a reasonable development cycle for a game of this size.

I'll do that.

Have you been following progress lately? They recently wrapped up a major overhaul of the CryEngine's precision engine (32 to 64bit), and are quickly moving into the 'content' stage.

Also, if you're concerned about how your money is being spent, please make sure you watch the 2016 Gamescon demo, which basically silenced all but the most vocal haters, and 'should' satisfy reasonable expectations as well as neuter any 'it will never be done' arguments.
