Star Citizen: Chris Robert`s new space sim (the Wing Commander guy)

One man's "sadly" is another man's "thank God."

If this was just a space shooter, I would have absolutely no interest. That being said, the space-shooter component of the game seems to really good, so I don't see any reason to worry if that's the role you want to play.

Agreed. More than anything, I'm excited about the economy simulation. Trading cargos with dynamic prices that move based on supply/demand within a persistent universe.

How cool is that? Hell, they even hired an economist to guide the modeling of it. It doesn't get much coverage because it's one of the less glamorous aspects of the game (a business simulation doesn't sell nearly as much as pew pew pew). But I'm really excited to see how that turns out.

And not only that, but it's possible trading cargo is going to be more involved than just pressing Buy and Sell buttons because it is an actual tangible thing in the game world. We will actually see the cargo on our ship, so trading may actually involve physically moving it on and off your ship.

For those that didn't watch the PAX East Presentation, some timeline/release information:

Arena Commander (now renamed StarCitizen) 1.1 release date: imminent
FPS Module included in 1.2 release date: End of March 2015
Multi-crew ships in 2.0 release date: Mid 2015
Squadron 42 Module 1 release date: End of 2015
Persistent Universe Beta release date: End of 2015

Important changes/additions:
-Gimball mounts optional for most hardpoints, but limit weapon to one size lower
-Multi-player free-flight mode being added
-REC store for using credits earned by playing the current modules being released (either in 1.1 or 1.2). Can be used to rent weapons/ships/equipment to test out different loadouts, etc. (so that we don't need to spend real money to test things)
-2 game modes in FPS module being released with initial release, one a Pirates vs Marines fight, the other an "Ender's Game" zero-G arena (with addition of a laser-grapple)

Some of the release dates surprised me a little. With the inclusion of using some DX12 features, I was assuming the game would be possibly delayed slightly until the release of Windows 10. I guess it really depends on if MS releases in June/July as they thought they might.

I thought I heard that the planetside/social module would debut in April. That's the big demo event this weekend at SxSW (which I'm attending - can't wait).

Things are really starting to pick up steam with SC.....

You guys think it's too late and/or pointless to pick up a ship or two now? I generally hate preorder/kickstarter kind of purchases, but I definitely want to play this game. I can wait, but does it make sense to still buy something now?

For sure. I might wait until later this year when more modules are out or maybe even the full beta is released.

I haven't done a lot of Arena Commander since .08 or whatever it was called last year but I'm really looking forward to trying out the FPS module. So, if that's something that interests you...... It'll be out out end of month. A ship package would give you access to that as well.

To clarify (I think), a ship package would get you beta access to all modules of the game. But if you want alpha access to FPS, you'll need to spend the $5 for a FPS module pass (and actually, no one knows how much an FPS module pass will cost....AC was $5 so that's what people think).

Ah you might be right about the $5 pass. My package has alpha access with it so thankfully I don't have to worry about the module access addons.

I would look to buy an Aegis Bulldog-class Twin-Engine Deep Space Fighter when it becomes available with LTI. Im buying a minimum of two of these.

Thanks for the replies guys! I'm still reading up on everything. It can be overwhelming heh. I found a "buyers guide" that attempts to match your intended playstyle to the right type of ship as well, so I'll use that. Thanks for the recommendation ToySoldier, ship sounds cool and actually fits how I think I'll play.

It was posted November 2013, so I'm sure some of it has to be outdated.

I'm pretty sure I've come across newer versions of buyers guides. Search the RSI forums and I'm confident you'll find them.

But two thoughts:

1) Don't forget everything will be earnable in-game with in-game money. So you don't HAVE to purchase a Super Hornet today just because you want to be a fighter pilot.

2) More ships are in the pipeline for development so you may very well change your mind at a later date.

Dev just mentioned download size will be about 100GB... ouch. Sorry for those with slow internet connections and/or data caps.
