Doesn't look like they will hit the target - Crowdfunding ends in 26 days

Goal: $2,000,000
Raised: $655,204

32.76%

They do have an option to refund the money if the goal isn't hit.
:(

On the other hand those stats mean that the average pledge is just shy of $100. Apparently other space sim fans are just as crazy as I am.

They should maybe have gone with kickstarter, but are the rules different?

Can't say that I have heard much about crowdfunding or much advertisment of Star citizen.

I doubt Kickstarter would have made much of a difference beyond forcing them to raise another 250K to cover the costs of using Kickstarter. If by the end of 30 days you haven't heard of Star Citizen, whether it was on Kickstarter or not would be irrelevant.

So it's made $600k+ in 4 days? I thought that it had started a month ago...

And I already have my Golden Ticket...

You guys are slow :p The website was posted on AT PCG a few weeks ago with a countdown for the reveal (which was obviously today) :)

That explains it my bad :(

We can only hope for something like a modern Freespace. I don't know why other space sims are so disinterested with capship battles. Besides being a spectacular game in terms of fundamentals, Freespace's titanic capship battles were a thing of beauty. I doubt there will ever be anything quite like it again.

Star Citizen, looks like they got the awesome ship design and graphics down, now the question is what part wing commander and what part privateer is this, and how strong is the SP/MP narrative.

Otherwise: huge boner.

Cap ship battles are difficult to do right and resource intensive (it's a lot of art). Of all the space sims I played, I'm not sure how you could pull it off without ripping off Freespace 2. Giant colored beams is the only way to make it look so exciting on that scale.

interesting point, it would be fun to log into some random battle and be a gunner on a huge ship, or an invading marine or even an engineer running around fixing stuff.

Missiles work as well. Fire your AMS missiles and see waves of explosions as waves of enemy missiles explode before reaching you, and see the readout of the ones that made it through coming at you.

Also assault shuttles to board the enemy capital ships would be very exciting, make it so that you need a crew of players to man turrets for your heavy beam weapons, give players on the ship ship wide voice chat and only the command crew get fleet wide voice chat. Give officers on the ship each a crew of npc's that they can give orders to that they will carry out autonomously.

The problem is most games just make capital ships large single player controlled fighters with heavy arms and bad turn rates.

Missiles only work if you're on the receiving end. For cap-to-cap you'll never even see them since they're so far away.:(

Starlancer actually tried to do missile based cap ship battles and it worked fairly well. They tried to make the player feel more involved in the battle's outcome by being able to intercept and disable the missiles before they turned your cap ship into scrap. Turns out its just annoying having to play babysitter and hunt down these tiny ass missiles in lieu of *fun* ship to ship combat.

While the beam weapons really took the Freespace 2 experience over the top, little stuff like flak cannons shredding your fighter if you got too close to a cap ship and that power-up sound of the beam cannons made the experience really visceral. If you give cap ship weapons enough *oomph* in the sound department and made sure the weapons were visually engaging, I think it would go a long way to providing a satisfying beam free experience. I agree if we get a bunch of *pew pew* like the trailer's place holder sounds then cap ship battles would be very anti-climactic.

Just made my pledge. It wasn't much but I would love to see a new space sim by Roberts become a reality.

I've been reading and pouring over everything about this. I now think this is the game I've been waiting for my entire life. lol. I hope it gets enough backing. I'm far more interested in this than the Obsidian kickstarter.

I mean, come on, they are showing graphics for the thrusters for turning instead of just 1 thruster in the back and physics is going to be simulated for these. The cockpit is fully animated, 3 dimensional, and interactive. Watch the damn videos! They also plan on having Oculus Rift support.

This guy doesn't plan on just making a game here; this is his life project. He wants everything for it. Just listening to him you can tell that he has worked out every bit of detail, all the detail that I've dreamed of having in this type of game.

This thing needs more backers meow!

There's a bit more variation in the ships in Wing Commander and there's a bit more storytelling in the Wing Commander universe than what they did with Xwing/Tie fighter. Don't get me wrong Xwing/TIE Fighter are awesome games as well but there's just a bit more to Wing Commander. I came across my Wing Commander III discs while doing a bit of cleanup today, going to have to see if I can get them working under Windows 7 somehow, probably will end up using DOSBox or some such.

gog.com has all the Wing Commander games for sale and they work on W7.

I think he'd be doing a lot better on kickstarter... Even I'm hesitating a bit to pay into it because there's fees for the refund if it's defunded, and then you need to register specifically for it. Kickstarter you have a huge base of people that just need to have a link shown to them and a couple of clicks. Very easy to get people to impulse invest/preorder.

22 days is a long time. this hit 1 mil way faster than planetary annihilation and that ended up at 2.2 million. we'll definitely hit 2 mil - only question is how many stretch goals we'll get.

If they deliver on their promises this is likely the space game of my dreams (that EVE Online could never quite reach).

is the kickstarter fund drive separate from their own website or are they combining the totals for the various goals?
I thought they weren't going to kickstarter because it didn't offer everything they wanted..

wonder why they changed their minds?
