Freespace junk? Freespace 2 is one of the greatest space games ever made.

(IMO) The best ever space game made. Heck, it still looks decent today :)

Elite, I suppose, could be a contender (like Dune II for RTS) as being the game that spawned the genre.

I just cannot understand his/her comment either.

It'll be interesting to see how much money they've pulled in just in the first day. Given what happened to the website and the number of people I'm seeing get the $125 packages, it could end up being quite a bit.

Still, the guy promises a super duper game with only 2 millions??? I really hope we`re not looking at some space version of Duke Nukem.

No, he has private investors lined up that will contribute 12-14 million...IF at least 2 million can be raised via crowdfunding. That is at least 14 million, should be a good start.

I could not help but think the same thing... However, I am the biggest fan (along with others) of him and his work. The problem with this project is that it seems 'too large' and 'too big'. To my knowledge he never did a sandbox type game, and all of the sandbox games I have ever played have felt empty... With that said, every game he has done has been great. Wing Commander 3/4/5 were absolutely incredable. Well, except that Mark Hammil is a crappy actor.

I hope he can pull it off. We need new space game of epic quality.

Fun Tale: I remember when I first purchased Wing Commander 3. My video card did *NOT* pass the test. It was a 1/2 meg vid card, and I hada 486 50Mhz DX with I think 8mb of ram. Well, even though it could not pass the test completely, it did allow me to play. Te funny thing is, the game itself ran just fine (except with the dreadnaught was out, then it was a slide show) but every mission took (no lie!) 5 minutes to load. Most people would have thought their PC locked up.. But I waited and waited. So if I failed a mission, it was another 5 minute wait. Then, one day I loaded the game on my friends Pentium-100Mhz. It loaded the game in about... 5 seconds. I couldn't believe it. I guess both my processor and hard drive were horrible. Thanks Dad! :-D

Yeah, but still this game is bigger and more complex than all the previous games combined. Not mentioning that he took a 10 year break from gaming;I wish that they will deliver all that was promised but it will be a very though thing to do.

do the higher tiers get alpha/beta access any earlier than the $30 tier?

edit: also, is there going to be a monthly fee for the mmo aspects?

edit 2 - for the latter:
Not a subscription but not free-to-play; rather a hybrid of these two business models. Much like ArenaNet's Guild Wars 2, you will purchase the PC game and pay no recurring subscription charges. Your purchase of the game will allow you to play in the universe for free, forever! The game will offer a variety of virtual items for purchase with in-game credits allowing you to spend money on items that offer more ways to express yourself, provide convenience, and customize your experience. But the cardinal rule regarding "in-game purchases" is: Players who spend money purchasing in-game credits will have no advantage over players who spend time!

Is this MMO or Single player with some MMO elements?

mmo, but will have single player elements.

or single player, with mmo elements.

not quite sure which way it will slant. i'm thinking the former.

It's closer to an MMO with a lot of SP elements. There's a proper MMO-ish server, but there are also private shards you can run if you want to play with yourself.

the $30 may be an early-bird discount?

The $30 is a limited quantity version of the $35 tier and grants you the Scout title in game. The $40 tier contains the same stuff as the $30 and $35 but grants the Mercenary title instead of Scout. Or at least thats how I read it.

I'm still trying to decide between the $60 and $125 tiers. :/

In the meantime, we can tide ourselves over with WC Saga : Darkest Dawn

You would think he could get some massive money from amd, intel and nvidia. This is looks to be one of those games you have to build a pretty mean rig to enjoy to its fullest.

He already has private investors willing to chip in between 14-18 mil as long as he can get at least 1 mil in crowdsourced funding. Interesting way to go about it but it makes sense, backers want to see that there's interest in the game and people putting their money where their mouth is a good way to find out. I'm pretty darn sure that he'll easily raise and likely surpass the 1 million needed. I've put my money where my mouth is and gotten the "Make mine a Double" pledge.

I never played the Wing Commander games. How do they stack up to Xwing/Tie Fighter?

Tie Fighter is still one of the most memorable and awesome games I have ever played.

There's a bit more variation in the ships in Wing Commander and there's a bit more storytelling in the Wing Commander universe than what they did with Xwing/Tie fighter. Don't get me wrong Xwing/TIE Fighter are awesome games as well but there's just a bit more to Wing Commander. I came across my Wing Commander III discs while doing a bit of cleanup today, going to have to see if I can get them working under Windows 7 somehow, probably will end up using DOSBox or some such.
