Hopefully we get and APU with at least 14 CU on DDR 5. I also hope AMD gets their APU processors out around the same time as the non APU processors since they no longer have to utilize Global Foundaries.
While I would love that, I find it relatively unlikely as it would require AMD to bet on the market viability of a very large die SoC (Renoir with Vega 8 is already quite large, so unless there are dramatic density improvements from 5nm anything with 14 RDNA CUs would be very large) - unless of course MCM APUs are feasible at that point. That would of course be the ideal scenario, as they could pair an already existing CCD and possibly even reuse a low-end dGPU die for the iGPU as long as it's small enough to fit on the package, which could give us a lot more than 14 CUs (though likely at low clocks to avoid burning our motherboards). But without MCM APUs I doubt we'll see that big an increase.

Well next quarter its going to be then.

Also ASMedia's record orders from AMD. Somebody is dreaming BIG.

Damn, June for B550 - must have missed this. The missus needs a new computer and I wanted to do a 550 build :(

Regarding the 16 core Zen 3 cpu spotted,
the best would be if that 16 core is actually the successor to the 3900x, so being the 4900x.
That could potentially mean a 60% multi core benchmark increase (20% IPC, 5% clock, and over that 25% a 25% increase in core count) for perhaps the same price? One can dream.

Depends on how the CPU works. If along with combining the cache is a combining of the CCX (so a single core unit per CCD) I could see that being the case. They would have much more flexibility in core counts in both the desktop chips and TR/EPYC. Meaning the 4925 and up can be filled different TR sizes from 20C and up in 4c increments.

I think it would be nice to have a clearer naming scheme, rather than 3100 and 3300 having same # of cores, 3700 and 3800 having same #, and 3900 and 3950 being different # of cores.

differentiation non-X vs X is by base/boost clock and/or even TDP
e.g.
4500/4500X are 4C/8T
4600/4600X are 6C/12T
4700/4700X are 8C/16T
4800/4800X are 12C/24T
4900/4900X are 16C/32T

Wake up, amrnuke, stop dreaming!

You know what will also make a lot of sense? Unifying the APU and CPU numbering. So logic would not be defeated by things like 3400G and 3300x.

I'd like something like this:

4400g 4c (Renoir)
4400x 4c
4500g 6c (Renoir)
4500x 6c
4600g 8c (Renoir)
4600x 8c
4700x 10c
4800x 12c
4900x 14c
4950x 16c

X = performance option
G = integrated graphics option
possibly later
E = low power option (as in GE or XE)

I can tell you with absolute certainty that he is wrong.
Or maybe not.

Or maybe not.

I guess it's not a coincidence this is popping up a day or two after Comet Lake reviews, huh?

1usmus says only 4900x and 4950x in October. 4600x-4800x closer to new year.

Makes sense to try to get early adopters to pay more. Doubly so if they have any glut of Zen 2 they need to unload. It would start to get really cluttered if they also have Renior desktop at the same time, maybe that will get delayed until after Vermeer is fully launched.

Zen 2 was a big jump for AMD. But they still fell short in the key category of gaming. They need to release Zen 3 ASAP. This is intel we are talking about. You can't take a 10 year vacation and come back with Ryzen without running the table in all categories.

And yet, it has become the 'go to' generation for DIY systems. Are you saying that OEM prebuilts are the choice of the gaming community based on performance criteria?

Zen2 is a huge jump for AMD. This is my Ryzen test system. It started with a R3 1200 in Zen. But they did not dethrone Intel in the gaming category. Expecting excellence is not something that is unreasonable. If Zen 3 wins across the board they can change the name of Ryzen Master to Zen Master. The reason DIY choose Ryzen is simply because Intel has been sticking it to consumers for a decade. AMD is still #2. They have to earn #1 by winning in every category.

Indeed. AMD needed a July/August launch though. Had they managed that, it would have been a crushing blow.
Given that both Zen+ and Zen 2 came to market >1 year after their predecessors, expecting Zen 3 to hit <=1 year sounds unreasonable to me. While a yearly launch cadence would no doubt be beneficial in a lot of ways, that's not how product development works.

July 2020 would have been one year. August would have been 13 months, well within a reasonable launch window. September was "a bit late". October is pushing it.

To just remind you: Zen+ was released over 13 months after Zen and Zen 2 over 14 after predecessor.
15 months for Zen 3 is rather reasonable, especially with whole coronavirus situation.

Fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine

I still think AMD is slacking. Just because the competition is stumbling doesn't mean they can afford to be lazy. Maybe they pulled in more features (like TAGE for Zen2) for Zen3 so it won't sting so much once it shows up.
