Dunno bout you guys, but if some retard put up a huge flag in my office I'd take it down. Not for being offensive, but for being tacky and overzealous. The office or workplace is not your place to spill out your patriotism. Keep what you want on your desk but don't presume everyone else will like or enjoy what you do to the whole office.

I would generally agree, bad form. However, I believe she put it up just for Memorial Day and certain temporary expressions can be completely acceptable, especially in this case of a national holiday. 3x5 is a little large though...
A flag that size isn't intended for an office and hanging it on the wall is out of line. A smaller flag bigger than a desk flag on a stand probably would have been fine, like one you see in the Oval Office.

Actually the article didn't state that the person was offended by what the flag stands for, it could very well be that such a large flag was offensive as in it might disrupt the office decor where as a smaller flag would have been perfectly fine.

Actually it did ...

"When McLucas came to work Friday, her boss told her another supervisor had found her flag offensive. "I was just totally speechless. I was like, 'You're kidding me,'" McLucas said."

I'm still on board with the idea that such a large flag was visually disruptive but the whole "offensive" thing is another issue entirely.
Where does that say the other Sup found what it stood for offensive? It could have been that it totally disrupted the decor of the office and that the other Sup found that offensive.

Jesus Christ! (and im atheist) its f'ing Memorial Day Weekend. If you cant stomach a large flag on that holiday you have some serious problems. Im sure she planned to take it down once the holoday was over.

Here in California it's OK to hang Mexican and Rainbow Coalition flags everywhere, but the American Flag is offensive. Especially if you hang the flag in honor of Memorial Day - extra offense must be taken :).

Really? What sort of kooky employer do you work for that allows people to hang up whatever huge flag they want anywhere they want in the workplace?

I think they both have some issues, the gal for taking upon herself to hang such a large flag on the wall the the Supervisor not willing to let it slide for a day of two even if she found it offensive looking in the office. Of course there's this reporter looking for a story and is probably making it seem to be bigger deal than it really is and it seems she/he found an audience willing to go along with it

"I was just showing my patriotism and an immigrant with dark skin got mad at me!" You really have to want it to not think that story sounds a little fishy, especially since we're only getting one side of it.
You are not alone. That was my first thought as well. It sounds like another "Attack on Christmas" propaganda piece. The story as presented just doesn't sound plausible to me. To whatever extent it's accurate, I'm betting they omitted information about the reason the other supervisor complained.

That said, in my opinion there should have been a damn solid basis for the complaint before management took action, especially with Memorial Day coming up. Perhaps the size of the flag was a problem in a small office, or the way she set it up was interfering with work. If the only objection was that it was an American flag, my response would have been, "Welcome to America. This is a free country. One of your freedoms is the right to be offended. Now get back to work."

A 3x5 flag isn't really that big if it's hanging from a pole. It's only a couple of square feet of floor space and could easily tuck into a corner. That assumes, of course, she was trying to place it out of everyone's way.

I've told you a million times not to exagerate :).

But seriously folks, 3'x5' is not huge by any stretch of the imagination. And you lefties getting all bent out of shape over someone honoring Memorial Day is just sad IMHO.

Meh, The reason for getting rid of the flag is poor at best. The national flag is not offensive, People that find it offensive should move to another country.

However, if the reason was more of something like "It doesn't look professional" Then I would support the managers decision. If someone comes to work in a red white and blue flag decor outfit I would be all for them getting sent home to change.

I don't see anybody here getting bent out of shape for a Flag being displayed in Memorial Day but I do see a lot of people questioning the validity of the story.

This article sounds like complete BS. Its likely she was asked to take it down because of the size of the flag or its obstructing something in a shared space. Then she decided to make up a story about it as retribution for her boss at work. Because its hitting so many buttons with the Flag Wavers, you can tell its pretty much made up. I wonder if she carved a B into her face as well. I can't wait to get this is an email forward for the next couple of years.

This is America. The corporation owns you and everything at your work. You can be fired at any time, for any reason. The corporation decides what you wear and when you work. The corporation owns your computer and everything that passes through it. Of course the corporation can tell you what flag you can fly and how big it can be.

Why are righties questioning what the corporation is doing? This country is based on the rule of law, and the law is all on the side of the corporation.

A 3' x 5' flag is only large if they work in a wind tunnel. Under normal office conditions, hanging from a pole, that flag would be reasonable size.

If it was put up on the wall it wouldn't be appropriate but if it was on a proper pole made for displaying a flag indoors then you have a point. Usually though flags of that size are usually hung outdoors off of a pole in a holder on the porch.

I think it's worth mentioning this was a shared workplace, its not like this other worker went itno her cube to pull down the flag. I had a shared workspace before, if someone hung a giant flag in there I'd be kinda pissed too.

Thus patriotism is hardly an admirable quality.

WOW, Did you just learn to type what you heard on the radio>
You've posted about Nationalism in 2 posts in a row now. You should have stayed a lurker now ou will be lumped into the group of Phokus, JPeyton and the likes.

Even on Memorail Day when you most likely would know that your office mate had military family and ties? That would be pretty tacky of you. I mean goddamn its only 1 day or a holiday weekend it would be up.

Patriotism, like Prayer and Charity should be practised quietly, not advertised in hope of praise. "Hay Debbie put away your big ol' flag and volunteer to clean up a cemetery!"

BTW What do you people mean a 3' by 5' flag isn't too big, you need a nine or eight foot tall stand to keep it off the floor!
