Not only does the HMP-A1 support MP3 natively, but Sony will ship it with MusicMatch's Jukebox software.
Your quotes directly contradict my quotes. So, I suppose noone knows if it really plays MP3s or not. My honest guess would be that since the MP3s are apparently converted on the fly while being transferred to the player, the reviewer in your link simply was unaware that his files were converted to ATRAC.
I could be wrong and I apologize if I was. *EDIT* It turns out I thought this thread was referring to the VGF-AP1, which DOES NOT PLAY MP3s. In any case I apologize for the inaccurate posts, it was an honest mistake. :beer:
