This is Sony's answer to the iPod. Plays mp3's and videos on a 20 gig harddrive. Kinda big, but it Looks pretty sweet!

I don't need a multimedia station that small. My ipod is just fine - simple, and clean interface.

Like Sony's other digital music players, it will only play songs encoded in the company's own ATRAC 3 format.

I had expected Sony, the inventor of the famous Walkman, to come out with an iPod killer well over a year ago. They missed the boat on this and now have to play catch-up. Personally speaking, I think their entry looks like crap.

¥63,000 ($563/£310).

and to correct "GTaudiophile" The Creative Zen and Rio Karma are both better alternatives to the iPod then this thing, hell the karma is just better IMO

Nice. Their $465 music player supports only ATRAC. Less than $100 more and you get one that supports MP3 and plays video. It looks huge compared to a standard Pocket PC though.

I have been considering the Karma and the Dell DJ but was reading that the Karma was having quality issues with the hard drive dying after a couple of weeks use and the buttons becoming recessed in the case.

LOL.. then no matter what, it's a complete piece of sh!t. Screw Sony. Every time they come up with something neat, they gimp it in some proprietary way. What a worthless company..

No this one plays mp3s instead....but from what I can tell, that's it.

iRiver, OTOH, has had this kind of player in the works for a small while now (I think working with M$ on it) and will probably also plays wavs, wma, asf and ogg (considering their iHPs do), in addition to mpeg4 stuff.

Didn't read the article or the thread. Doubly stupid.

That said, I don't really want a portable video player. I don't have the time to reencode all my movies to an optimal resolution for the player on top of ripping cds as I buy them. Plus 20gb wouldn't go very far...I've already filled up my 20gb karma, and that's just with music.

What I did like about the previous Vaio Pocket (VGF-AP1 -- the one that does only support atrac and no video capabilities) was the color screen that displayed album art. I thought that was really cool.
