But in addition to being physically larger than the iPod - an issue that has dogged other iPod competitors - the VAIO Pocket, like the PlayStation Portable, has two critical Achilles' Heels: the first is Sony's proprietary standards. As is the case with Sony's other digital music devices, the VAIO Pocket requires users to convert their songs into the proprietary Sony ATRAC audio format, which takes more time and hassle than transferring MP3s straight onto an iPod. Notably, users of other Sony devices have previously complained loudly about the poor performance and stability of Sony's ATRAC conversion and uploading software.

AGAIN, LINKIFIED FOR THE UNINFORMED

So yeah, I suppose everyone in the world is wrong and Werk is right.
Ok, you can't be serious. Nobody is truly this stupid.

And in a rare move for Sony, the player supports MP3 rather than the company's own ATRAC audio format.

Or maybe this...

Not only does the HMP-A1 support MP3 natively, but Sony will ship it with MusicMatch's Jukebox software.
hmm...maybe he finally figured it out. Nothing but DeafeningSilence from SickBeast.

Your quotes directly contradict my quotes. So, I suppose noone knows if it really plays MP3s or not. My honest guess would be that since the MP3s are apparently converted on the fly while being transferred to the player, the reviewer in your link simply was unaware that his files were converted to ATRAC.

I could be wrong and I apologize if I was. *EDIT* It turns out I thought this thread was referring to the VGF-AP1, which DOES NOT PLAY MP3s. In any case I apologize for the inaccurate posts, it was an honest mistake.

So this will play MusicMatch's music which I think is protected with WMA DRM. Will it also play Napster files which are protected by the same protection scheme?

good god, sony never learns. they could have owned the market early on considering how small nice their players were..cept for the whole big brother breathing down your neck software/hardware sh*t they love to do. f*ck sony.

It looks alright but it would be better to be thinner. Price isn't so bad if you are already going to spring out for an iPod anyway.

I may switch depending on the actual size and if the remote has an LCD screen like my MD. I REALLY can't stand the sh!tty iPod remote. SO BASIC and doesn't even have repeat or shuffle on the dam remote.

But it is still nice.
