"soda", "pop", "coke"... What do you call it?

Pop. Soda is what you do if you have a girlfriend of 6 months and still hold her hand as you go down to the local burger cafe and drink a freaking float

an open question to all coke sayers:

what do you say when you want a coke? how do you specify that the type of drink you want is coke when everything is coke to you?

i say pop and i have never heard anyone refer to it as soda except for soda water.

I remember a university did a research on the US on what people say, coke, pop, soda, etc. with graphs, I had the link but lost it 🙁 IIRC, Soda was New England through Minnesota area.... coke was mostly Texas to Georgia, and pop was west of the rest, IIRC.

I grew up in Southern California, where everyone called it soda. Then I moved up here to Washington state, and everyone calls it pop. It sounded awkward at first (probably because of my passionate dislike for pop 'music') but I got used to it.

Pop originated long before the 90's. (See Micheal Jackson, when he still had a nose)

Here's how it works. If someone comes to your house and you want to offer them a carbonated beverage, you ask "Would you like a coke?" Then when they say yes, you say "Well, we have Coke, 7up, etc, etc. Whaddya want?" If you go to the grocery store, and you can't find the carbonated beverages, you ask "Where are the cokes?" If you go to a restaurant and ask for a coke, you don't get upset if they don't bring you a 7up. You're not dumb, you say exactly what you want, you say "Gimme a 7up." It's not that complicated. 😛

It's mostly moot for me though since I usually say soft drink, which isn't one of the options.
 
Growing up in SE PA, I always called it soda. But after I spent a year in Michigan and now in Canada.. i've seem to acquire the habit of calling it pop.
