Oh, crime happens everywhere all the time. Violent crime is a different story though. Especially violent crime that involves the need for weapons. If you bring fists to a fight, you probably are going to walk away. If you bring a knife or gun to a fight, who knows. I would rather risk getting beat up or getting my wallet stolen than risk getting killed. I would be very interested in some statics that show how situations without weapons involved and with weapons involved end up.

right violent crime that actually happens is rare. But why take the chance of getting murdered, raped or such?

In the city i live Muggings don't happen very often. But there has been a few murders and a bunch of rapes. My wife and i would rather have her attempt to fight etc and escape then get raped. Considering she works nights i think her carrying pepper spray, etc is a smart move even thought the chances of anything happening is really low.

Pity that you think protecting yourself is stupid or wrong. I just hope your family never know the trauma of being raped.
Don't mock me. There is a HUGE difference between just being in the suburbs and working the 9-5 than being a woman who works nights and has to walk through a dark parking lot every night. Pity you can't keep your story straight. You go from "safe neighborhood" to "working graveyard shifts and dark parking lots".

hate to tell you but while i do live in the suburbs while it is safe during the day. AT night it is dark and not safe. NOT to mention if you read the back post i mentioned the closest neighbor is 1/2 mile away.

I have no worries about her walking around during the day. At night again it is a different story. IF you do NOT understand that its not my problem.

I have NOT heard of a city that does not have rapes. WE do not want to take the chance of her getting raped. no matter how "SAFE" you think the area is it still happens.

As stated this area is pretty safe (heck of a lot safer then the larger cities) but is safe enough to not worry about getting raped? HELL NO!

I have kept my story straight. I said she carries pepper spray. I carry a pocket knife (also mentioned it would be useless in a fight) but i also have a club in the car and trunk. Regardless where you live you should do your best to be safe.

I also stated i want a handgun for the house. again as i have stated our house is secluded. There is no neighbors near us.

IF pointing out that we want to be safe is mocking you then i bet you feel everyone mocks you. I'm glad you are OK with just being UN-armed and willing to take whatever someone does to you. While if anyone bothers me they just want my money (considering i carry maybe $5 at a time I'm not out much) But if someone bothers my wife odds are they want more then that. We are not willing to take that chance.

Get out and see the world. It is not as pretty as TV makes it out to be.

wtf, read my post again. I said it made sense to carry something if you are walking around in a dark parking lot at night.

Nothing you said contradicts ANYTHING I have said in this entire thread! Since you simply do not comprehend and cannot make the connect from a to b let me help you out a bit!

1.you carry a pocket knife for random things but not for self defense (this does not contradict anything I said)

2. I agreed that a dark parking lot is a place to be armed with something especially if you are a woman (are you beginning to learn?)

3. having a gun in your home for protection while you sleep also does not contradict anything I said (I never even MENTIONED! protection of your home with a firearm or other weapons)

While you may apparently have "seen" the world (not much of it if you live in a town where people live 1/2 mile apart) you might want to take a break from seeing the world and go get some education so you don't get so darn confused!

I have seen a good portion of the world. I did not grow up in this town. I have not only started my own business (been held up twice and broke into 4 times) i went to college at RIT (rochester NY)

you are contridicting yourself.

Well it must suck going through your life being so scared that you have to carry a weapon everyday to feel safe.

Unless i am wrong night time is part of "everyday".

but then you say its ok to carry stuff at night. wich is it?

So all those soldiers all over the world that carry weapons every day are scared? No, I don't think so. They just know that the world is a dangerous place, and no one is going look out for you but you.

I also stated i want a handgun for the house. again as i have stated our house is secluded. There is no neighbors near us.

If all you need is a weapon for home defense, then might I recommend cleaning up that old shotgun and getting your wife and yourself qualified on it, at a proper range, with an experienced instructor.
I have a CWP, and at times have been known to carry a Baretta .40, but in reality, it's a lot of hassal, especially in the summer.
Since I hold a private security business license I was able to take more advanced training sessions and qualify, every year, alongside the state and county police. I consider this the minimum training. Mostly it's about gun safety and mental preparation. The actual range qualifation is more like serious recreation.
The fact of the matter is if you carry, and get into a life threatening situation, you have to be prepared to place 3 rounds, of a large caliper hand gun, "center mass" and live with that. Most people can't, and shouldn't be carrying. Most likely their own weapon will be used against them.
As to statitics, I think if you do a search you will find that crime rates have dropped in states where a carry permit is accessable to its citizens.

TwoBills, you're right, a lot of people aren't prepared to kill another person, and shouldn't be carrying a gun.

Yeah i should take the shotgun in to the local weapons smith (yes we have one! lots of people hunt around here) and see what it would take to get working.

I have been shooting for years (granted .22's but man they are fun!). but my wife has never fired a gun. She is also rather small. her license says 5" evne but i think she is more like 4"10 and maybe 120lbs.

But then again if she cant fire the shotgun i doubt she will be able to fire a handgun.

They make handguns for small women. Check out som Kahr's in 9mm or even .380. Great small pistols. Ask a gun dealer, they will be able to find a gun that will work for your wife.

A shotgun is indeed an imposing weapon for home defense. The sound of the action working is enough to deter most criminals.

I have a collection to choose from, but my concealed carry of choice is a Taurus Model 38UL. I replaced the sticky rubber grips with smooth wooden grips, had a gunsmith mill off the hammer tang, and smoothed the front sight.

Live in central Texas & have found the only comfortable way for me to carry is to use a pocket holster & do a pocket carry.

I've had a CWP for years & actually rarely carry, but I want the right to carry if I see fit. The state agrees with me, even if 3/4 of the posters in Politics & News disagree.

I've actually been in a situation where I could have been in a heap o trouble because I didn't have a CWP, and have stopped a robbery & an assault with a gun. I could take a human life if it was a choice between shooting someone & harm coming to me, my family (& here's where it gets sticky) or my property.

If someone's got a better solution for carrying in hot climates wearing shorts & a t shirt, I'm all ears...

First person that says Pager Pal will be forced to put one in their pants & then climb in their car & drive for an hour with it digging into their crotch.

PliableMoose, I've found a great way to carry a gun w/ shorts and a tshirt is with a fanny pack. I have a leather fanny pack with a quick draw string. Fits my Sig 228 very well, with a pouch for an extra mag. Of course, fanny packs around here just scream "GUN" but I can live with that.

I also have an IWB holster that goes in the small of your back. So it's concealed by your tshirt.

I can't abide fanny packs, and here in TX, if you see a male over the age of 21 with one that isn't pink, you can be reasonably sure he's carrying.

I have a sidearmor IWB & don't like it either, course I wasn't wearing boxers when I tried it either.

Have never tried a pancake/paddle type IWB, might be an option....

The thing is, only people who are into the CCW scene know that a fanny pack = gun. And those people are the criminals you should be looking out for. Most people just think you're a fruit or nut of some sort. Suprise suprise for them.

Aside from a shoulder or hip holster under a jacket, I can't think of a faster draw from a concealed holster.

I usually just tuck it into the small of my back w/o a holster with a wind breaker over it or use a high rise belt holster that replaces the small tool pouch I usually carry there.

Depends. If you're really up close when the sh!t hits the fan, having a knife that you can get to very quickly isnt an automatic disadvantage (especially if you have already palmed it ;) ).

But in general, a handgun (with a caliber that starts with a '4' or a "10") is a much better weapon to have on your person for when the sh!t hits the proverbial fan.

I am not going to read through this thread for fear of gun-bashers.

Until now I havent really felt it necessary to carry a weapon, but with some of the things that have been happenning at work and with the increasing crime rate around here I have been shopping around. I am thinking about getting a handgun. I dont want anything huge and bulky. I am thinking of getting a nine mil or something similar. Here in Kent Count, MI, they just passed a law that says that you can carry a concealed weapon unless the state/county can prove that you shouldnt. I asked my buddy who is a deputy what that meant and he said basically that as long as you dont have any violent offences or any felonies, they have to give you a permit. The law before was that you had to show a reason to carry one, and the only people who got the permits were former cops and friends of cops.

I still am not sure I am going to get a gun, but I like having the option.
