You all make fun of farmers, yet without them the vast majority of you would starve to death.

Or maybe it's funny that they tried to set the world record for harvesting wheat? I find it uniquely funny how people think they have higher moral standards because they lack a sense of humor.

I think it's funny that we tried to set this record, but I guess you have to try and set the records for things that matter to your community.

London for instance tried to set the masturbating records today. (Or it was in the UK anyway)

A combine costs more than my house. I wonder how long a farm takes to pay one off.

Cereal grain farmers (wheat, barley, etc) really don't make an awful lot of money. Economically it doesn't make an awful lot of sense. They have $2-3million of land, $800-$900,000 sunk into equipment, $250,000 in buildings & grain storage, etc. All this and they maybe make $100,000/year off of it. Seems kind of silly actually.

Accipiter22,

When the plains were settled back a hundered years ago they surveyed it out into one mile by one mile pieces which are called sections. One section is 640 acres. Each section is split into 4 quarters (160 acres each). a quarter is the smallest piece of land that used to be available (though now of course things have been subdivided beyond that in some areas).

Not sure how things are in the US but here in Canada the heirarchy of land classification is oulined here: Text

To make this a little more impressive for the city dwellers think of the dollar value in combines that it took to achieve that.

Additionally for those who don't know (I had to look it up) a 1/4 section is 160 acres.

Viper GTS

Thanks, you beat me to it with the definition of "1/4 section."

Still, I have never heard of a "section" before. 😕 Bushel, foot, meter, inch, kilometer, acre, hectare, mile etc. Sure. But "Section?"

What makes this feat even more bible belt middle America is that they did all of that...for charity.

Farmer 1: Allrighty Jimbob!!! We done did it! (spits tobaccy on the ground)
Farmer 2: PRaise the lord, Jeremiah! Yes we did!
Farmer 3: We set the record, heck yes!!! Now we can give the money away!
Farmer 4: Uh...fellas...don't we all still live in trailer parks?
Farmer 1: Oh sh!t.

Morality? Bah, this is a case of supposed elitism disguised as humor.

I see no humor in hard working people trying to take pride in what they do.

Let's face it, if elitist city folks stopped doing what they did, farmers would barely notice. If farmers stopped doing what they do, you'd all starve.

You make fun of janitors.. yet without them, the vast majority of you would be living in slum.

Farmers live in farm houses. I've never seen a trailer park on a farm.

Do any of you EVER get out of the city?

I don't make fun of janitors... but honestly, I'd rather be dirty than starve to death.

Point is that even the lowliest of the jobs benefit our society. We need them to do our dirtywork. It doesn't make them respectable because of it.

A lot of city dwellers need to understand there is a big difference between farmers and redneck white trash. I went to college in central Illinois where there are a lot of farms. Consequently there were a lot of farm boys at my college. Overall they were some pretty cool people and fun to hang around with. Now on the other hand I'm currently living in northern Kentucky, and redneck white trash is all over the place here.

Yeah, I knew quite a few of the farmers involved and most live in 1500sqft+ houses.

And yet farming isn't a lowly job. It requires not only hard labor, but an education and signifigant knowledge.

And most of you seem to have never met a farmer, and have them confused with white trash trailer park residents... which they are far from.

Sections of land are part of the Government survey system. It is the standard system for the vast majority of America.

Even implying that farming isn't a respectable job shows your ignorance.

I would NEVER compare farmers with janitors anyway. Anyone can be a janitor, you could quit your job right now and probably make a decent janitor. Farming, on the other hand, takes a lifetime to master and more money than many MANY jobs to finance.

The rednecks that you so like to make fun of most likely do the "dirty-work" for the respectable farmers that you're trying to lump them with.

Farming may be dirty, but it's not the kind of "dirty-work" that you are implying it is. That being menial labor that is only for folk who you perceive to be inferior to yourself.

How many of the numbnuts posting here could afford the "redneck's" $300K combine? Yeah, that's what I thought.

I've met a farm owner online from playing total annihilation about 8 years ago. I keep in touch every now and then.
I agree that it isn't lowly for many(farm managers, biotech farms).. but it is for most(labor workers).

A farm worker and a farmer are entirely different things.
