I think it's funny that we tried to set this record, but I guess you have to try and set the records for things that matter to your community.

Cereal grain farmers (wheat, barley, etc) really don't make an awful lot of money. Economically it doesn't make an awful lot of sense. They have $2-3million of land, $800-$900,000 sunk into equipment, $250,000 in buildings & grain storage, etc. All this and they maybe make $100,000/year off of it. Seems kind of silly actually.

When the plains were settled back a hundered years ago they surveyed it out into one mile by one mile pieces which are called sections. One section is 640 acres. Each section is split into 4 quarters (160 acres each). a quarter is the smallest piece of land that used to be available (though now of course things have been subdivided beyond that in some areas).

A lot of city dwellers need to understand there is a big difference between farmers and redneck white trash. I went to college in central Illinois where there are a lot of farms. Consequently there were a lot of farm boys at my college. Overall they were some pretty cool people and fun to hang around with. Now on the other hand I'm currently living in northern Kentucky, and redneck white trash is all over the place here.

I would NEVER compare farmers with janitors anyway. Anyone can be a janitor, you could quit your job right now and probably make a decent janitor. Farming, on the other hand, takes a lifetime to master and more money than many MANY jobs to finance.

The rednecks that you so like to make fun of most likely do the "dirty-work" for the respectable farmers that you're trying to lump them with.

Farming may be dirty, but it's not the kind of "dirty-work" that you are implying it is. That being menial labor that is only for folk who you perceive to be inferior to yourself.

I've met a farm owner online from playing total annihilation about 8 years ago. I keep in touch every now and then.
I agree that it isn't lowly for many(farm managers, biotech farms).. but it is for most(labor workers).
