Hmm weird that's the opposite to here. We have one Starbucks in town and about 25+ cafes. Mind you our coffee culture here is different to the USA - almost no one drinks percolated coffee, and when you "go out for a coffee" it's always an espresso type coffee. I don't think any of the cafes here serve percolator coffee any more.

And here Starbucks seems to be the hipsters/teenagers hang out. Normal folk eg working folk go to the cafes around town.

Most people go to coffee shops and order espresso based drinks. They do sell normal coffee and tea though.

Some places have fairly cheap ($2ish) unlimited self serve coffee. I'm a big fan of that.

This is really unusual in NZ. When we were visiting my bro in Christchurch we went to an American themed restaurant that had this. I had like 4 cups of coffee in an hour :\

i hope its like that now, the first and last time i was in starbucks was in 2001 at 620 am, i asked for a large black coffee and was told "we don't have large black coffee"

to this day im still amazed i didn't end up killing him

if you left without coffee...then that was a good call, that stuff is horrible.

I had that experience one time in Philadelphia, where the Starbucks clerk was playing dumb at my working-class order "medium black coffee". He named 6 or 8 kinds of coffee in an exasperated tone and asked me what size, like a sales clerk asking a 5 year old what kind of candy he wants.

I generally don't go to Starbucks unless I'm with my wife (she likes it) but it was only that one time they gave me trouble about ordering "medium black coffee". Every other time has gone smoothly.

I asked them for some coffee and they didn't have a clue what that was.... ???

They started asking me for specifications, as if I was engineering this coffee or something.

I left and went to McDonalds.

And why don't they have a English menu. That place is so wierd.

awww... screw you man... just screw you... you cheap ass dimwit... don't have money to buy Starbucks and so you blame your lazy welfare whore ass on Starbucks... just buzz off...

no i ended up getting coffee but only because my GF realized i was about to commit murder and handled it for me. Honestly at 6 am my mind just went blank when he said that. Im pretty sure i tried again asking for plain coffee and he asked me "what flavor"

i would have just gone to any other place that sells coffee but the GF HAD to have starbucks before she got on the train

Regular coffee at starbucks is more expensive than coffee purchased elsewhere, but its not $4. A large black coffee at my local store is just under 2 bucks. More expensive than the gas station or mcdonald's, sure. But in my opinion its much more tasty.

And for those of you that say Dunkin Donuts coffee is the best, I don't know how you can think that. IMO, Dunkin's is way too damn weak. Maybe if I scraped by tongue repeatedly with a metal rasp it would taste better?

Just say medium next time.

Their sizes are tall, grande, venti instead of small, medium, large. That's likely what they asked you.

I've gone in and asked for a large black coffee and the only thing they asked me was whether I wanted dark or light roast. Not really all that complicated; people just seem to want to bitch about nothing I guess.

anyone drinking sb or dunkin for flavor or claming they are the "best" is out of their mind. they're there as a means to an end. brew your own coffee if you want to go down the path of drinking good coffees

I never had an issue. The only issue I have had was when you ask for a large....they just replay back with "You mean a grande?"

DD used to be good. I swear, they have watered down their coffee now. If it's not watered down, they put too much cream and sugar in it.

Yes, that's right, according to ATOT, putting cream and sugar in your coffee is a bad thing.

a little bit is acceptable, but the levels that places like DD and McD (and usually *$) put in their coffee is outrageous.

their coffee is pretty bad. some of their specialty drinks are pretty tasty though. the stuff we have in the office is really bad. i've switched to 200mg pills unless i'm in the mood for the coffee taste.

Does America have coffee that isn't fast food coffee? Probably 95% of coffee bought in the city I'm in is from small cafes rather than Starbucks/Mcdonalds. Particularly as SB is so damn expensive - at least $6.00 for a coffee that would be $3.50 anywhere else.
Haha sucker. McDonalds large coffee - $1.77 CDN after tax

Starbucks always taste like ass. It's extremely bitter, like it's 2-3x as strong as regular human coffee. I'm amazed it doesn't give everyone the shits.

Luckily they're never cunts to me. I say large, they give me large. I say medium, they give medium.

"Waah, Starbucks uses 'trendy' names for sizes instead of small-medium-large! My tiny brain can't handle it!"

"Boo hoo hoo, Starbucks charges $5 for coffee! I'm too lazy to check their menu and learn that a regular cup of coffee costs less than $2!"
