I was ragging on a co-worker that was wasting a lot of paper about all the trees he was killing. He had no idea what I was talking about and said so.

I explained that paper was made from trees and he said that he didn't know what paper was actually made from, but that he knew it wasn't trees. He said this quite loudly to ensure that I knew he was verrrry confident in his statement.

Yikes.

Sounds like upper management or maybe a director?

Don't feel bad, I didn't find out that euthanasia does not mean "Youth in Asia" until I was in high school.

Got an F on that report....

Perhaps named for their preferance by buffalo soldiers (also not buffalo). Indeed, buffalo be an ignant misnomer as they (water buffalo and such as) are no relation to bison.

As for "pickles", yeah, I likewise figgered out early that it is a process applied to a variety of foods. Oddly, it does not involve jerkin the gherkin.

I mean I knew to pickle something was a process. Feet, eggs, that sort of thing. But I don't know. I guess I just never figured that the pickled vegetable deemed simply "pickle" was actually a cucumber.

Why was the cucumber the only one to take the name "pickle"? Why was it most worthy? Imagine if we called them pickled cucumbers and a Pickle was in fact pickled pigs feet...

While your coworker is obviously and idiot, you do know that the US grows trees at a rate of about 45% faster than we use them currently.

That's probably why he was "ragging" instead of seriously informing him with concern.

You can pickle wood, too, although today's process is just a stain. For the true wood enthusiast, you need to learn how to fume your wood.

As for my own lack of knowledge, I'd have to say I got so flustered by a physics teacher in junior high school with him flipping rapid fire questions to us and expecting rapid answers, I totally goofed on the equation for velocity. Intuitively, I knew it like I know mph, but I felt really, really stupid when he gave me one of those I can't believe you don't know that. And I never forgot it either.

Yeah man, i'm really embarrassed that hundreds of people I don't know and will never meet now knew that I never know what vegetable a pickle was. How will I show myself in public? How will I leave the house?! :)

Yes, but the Africans thought so. Needless to say, Gerber pulled their product line from there.

Shens?

Please?

I'm not kidding at all. I've seriously never known that. I'm not an idiot, this just little tidbit of info slipped through the cracks. Cucumbers are always so much larger then pickles so I guess I just never put 2 and 2 together.

the subspecies of cucumber they use to make pickles are smaller than the type of cucumbers they use for salads and other things

ie they are special cucumbers that are generally smaller that are used for most pickles

I always thought they were just baby pickles which were picked while they were still small.

I understand I should have known that, its common sense and all. But have you noticed that the examples that you guys have given so far to make fun of this all have the main word of the item in title of it? There is no mention of cucumber in pickle.

they're being turds, it might be common knowledge, but common sense? Nobody who's never heard where a pickle comes from will grab one and say "this use to be a cucumber!" that's about as logical as magically knowing a raisin use to be a grape.

I am surprised you hadn't heard this, but for people to call you dumb is pretty funny.

BTW I've never seen the cucumbers they use to make pickles, and every cucumber I've see was huge. I'd say the OP is pretty normal, I mean the knowledge of where a pickle comes from isn't exactly going to help you in life.
