"Life-altering cases"? This is why the American legal system fails.

life altering because now they are marked as sex offenders for the rest of their lives.. thats f'd up. the teacher that had them sent to the principals office is going to hell.. not to mention the people who decided they should be put in jail for 5 days

Why is the teacher's aide that sent 'em to the principal condemned for eternity? Seems to me that the boys' behavior was inappropriate ... she was giving the principal a chance to correct it.

I think the trip to Juvie and the criminal charges are overboard, but I also think that the boys needed an 'intervention' to get them to change their pattern of behavior.

They were running down the halls smacking girls asses. Oh noes!

What the fsck is the big deal?

I could see the problem if they were running around sticking their hands up girls' shirts, but this is ridiculous.

This is not a sex crime. These kids need detention for running down the halls and acting inappropriately, they do not need to be charged as sex offenders.

My good lord.

lets do an experiment. you do this in your place of work and let us know the results.
while i think the punishment is too much, the behavior is not acceptable for school.

lets also compare adults to 7th graders.

7th graders are retards, trust me i know because i have one.

Well, congratulations to this prosecutor, he's managed to step beyond the dude prosecuting Genarlow Wilson on level of stupidity and bad judgement.

Doing it to good friends of yours in a different setting (i.e. not in school) is a little different. You can't run down the hall at work and start smacking the butt of any female co-worker you see in the hall.

do you have to register as a sex offender for sexual harassment at work?

I wouldn't know and I don't intend on ever finding out.

I agree. Their behavior was completely inappropriate even for 13 year olds. That is definitely old enough to know better. Good that they are teaching them now rather than later when they are big enough to actually commit rape and do some real serious damage.
Umm....

I meant the prosecution is sick...... not the kids.

Oops my mistake for assuming you were intelligent enough to understand the difference between right and wrong.

Not to mention the fact that if you had done this in the work place, you're most likely to only get fired. Not arrested, charged and if convicted to the fullest extent, facing possible registration on the sex-offender list.

So screwing around is wrong, but excessive punishment isn't? When dealing with ethics and morals you can't pick and choose which ones you think are right.

The kids fucked up, sure. But at 13 years old is that the appropriate punishment? No way.

They should be punished, but ten years in jail is ridiculous. A good ass whipping would be more appropriate.

They haven't even been to court yet. Everybody is getting all bent out of shape like they've already been convicted. That ten year sentence is just the maximum allowable but I promise you they are NOT going to get that. They are not going to get anywhere close to that. What they are going to get is hopefully scared straight.

No, people are bent out of shape because of the very idea that courts would even be involved. It's a gross overreation on the part of the principle, the cop, and the girl's mother.

"Intervention"? Please, give me a break. The kids need a week's detention (which I always thought was more effective than suspension). But I suppose I, and others, are wasting time arguing with you. You've convincingly shown that you're exactly the type of person the majority of us are so pissed at on this issue.

Obviously you, and likely most of the other people here who think the cops and the principle and the parents of the young women are overreacting are looking at it from only the boys side of the fence. Stop and actually put yourself in the shoes of the girls in this situation. Think about it. Really think about it. How would you feel? I know there's no way I'm going to get an honest answer in this forum full of chauvinists incapable of empathizing with others. Go ahead and continue to blame the victims here. Those bitches! How dare they go to school with the expectation they have the right not to be molested by classmates!

I repeat. . .they HAVE NOT YET BEEN PUNISHED. They've only had charges pressed. They'll have their day in court. It won't be nearly as serious as everybody here is making it out to be. You all are acting like they've already been convicted and sentenced to death or something. They'll get a slap on the wrist but hopefully the whole situation will scare some common sense into them. The girls and their parents have every right under the law to press charges against these boys. And they'll have their chance to answer for their indiscretions.

That's alright, resorting to personal attacks and name calling is pretty much always an indicator that the name caller has no thoughtful or intelligent input to add to a conversation and that they have no logical or reasonable rebuttal to an opponents argument. Belittling others is the sign of a simpleton. Not saying this to belittle you. Just pointing out the facts. "Zing!" indeed. Nice insightful, thoughtful response.

I saw that and it's harsh. But better to teach kids at a young age that actions have consequences. Sometimes very serious ones. Think before you act. They are learning a very harsh life lesson and I feel sorry for them. But if they spend any further significant time in jail or end up on some sex offenders list for life after they get their day in court, I will eat all my words here.

As for my opinion on your views, perhaps you're the one that should go live in Afghanistan if you think dealing out such harsh punishment (5 days in jail + fun in court + who knows what after that) is appropriate for these boys. And you seem to think this is all just for show, that the DA and that the court will just play games to send a message. You have no clue what the outcome will be of this overzealous prosecution, so stfu about it.

I have been attacking peoples arguments. Not people directly. The only time I came even close to personally attacking somebody was when I said somebody should be intelligent enough to know the difference between right and wrong. And you have no more clue as to what the ultimate outcome of this prosecution will be than I have. It's just that judging by most peoples responses here, you'd think the boys were sentenced to death for this or something. But trust me, the prosecution is smart enough to realize they'd be virtually publicly castrated for sending a couple thirteen year-olds to jail for 10 years over this. They will agree to a much less severe plea bargain of some kind. They'll probably end up with nothing more than maybe some court mandated counseling, some community service, and supervised probation or something for a few months. That's just how the game is played.

No, but I'm also an adult. If we want to hold a 13 year old kid to the same standards as an adult, let's let them vote, drink, have sex legally, purchase handguns, drive, get married without parental permission, have legal ownership of property ...... um, I can't think of anything else off the top of my head. But you get the idea, there's a reason we don't make children adhere to the same standards. And if I did this at work, I'm betting that the worst I'd deal with is a guaranteed firing. I highly doubt I'd have to worry about going to jail for 10 years or registering as a sex offender. This punishment is unreasonable by all standards.

Besides, anything the children told the officers and principal is inadmissable since they were read their Miranda rights after being interrogated, didn't have parents or lawyer present, and are probably considered too young to understand the Miranda rights to begin with.

The only reason they are in this situation is because schools have all but lost any authority to properly discipline students any more. Our school systems are in a shambles largely in part to this sort of lack of ability for the schools to take disciplinary measures for this kind of behavior into their own hands. And it's only the over zealous and self-righteous parents who threaten litigation if anybody so much as lays a finger on their kids who are to blame. So what can the school do but wash their hands of the situation and hand it over to the cops? The school is looking out for itself. It's all they can do any more.

Um, comparing the case you linked to what these two 13 year-olds did does not even make sense. The case you linked is so many orders of magnitude more severe that it simply leaves me dumbfounded that you don't see the difference.

I have a 13 year old brother. I don't think he knows it's something your not supposed to do or at least not something that should be taken seriously. It's what 13 year olds do! Honestly, if those girls were so upset about it I could see the school reprimanding them but getting the police involved is ridiculous.

How's that pot calling the kettle black? I made a mistaken assumption and I clearly admitted it. Where did I resort to name calling? And if your 13 year-old brother does not know that you are not supposed to go around slapping girls on their butts that speaks volumes about the quality (or lack thereof) of your family upbringing and your parents. That's not something I'd be going around admitting in public if I were you.
