And if I don't play with the public I end up with a 2 square kilometer village. No thanks. SimCity reached its peak with 3000 Unlimited IMO.

So, if you refuse to interact with the outside world your city won't grow very large or prosper? Sounds a lot more realistic than I thought it would be.

And the idea that you are fearful someone will "wreck" your experience by trolling is laughable. Sure, there might be a couple. But that is true the in rest of the world as well. Afraid of someone spoiling something. Stay at home, off the internet, alone forever. We will move on just fine without you.

Exactly! +rep

Another child defending an unreleased video game.

Sorry, I played SimCity to build cities, not towns and villages, not densely populated towns and villages, cities.

From what I've seen and read about the game I won't enjoy it. If you're the kind of person who gets your panties in a twist over that opinion, and you're representative of the type of people who will be playing this game, then I sure as hell don't want to play with the public.

“We need to keep in mind that SimCity is a mainstream game,” Quigley clarifies. “It’s not a game that’s only going to run on high-end gaming PCs. It has to run in your dad’s PC as well. We’ll eventually get around to expanding the city size, but I can’t make any promises as to when.”

Enjoy your lowest common denominator.

IrishScott what is your problem with Simcity 5 ? Are you hurt you can not afford it ?

I want to be able to play with my friends and not all of them have the latest and greatest computer. That what make Valve games so great. Anyone can basically play them even on a low end computer.

Believe it or not, but there are lots of people that don't want to deal with always on DRM, and if this game wants to force you online so you can expand, bombard you with microtransactions to nickle & dime you to death, then what does it bother you that he won't be getting it ?

Heck, if the game only allows you to expand that way, I wouldn't want it either.

It is not always on DRM. If you get disconnected from the internet you can still play. It not nearly as bad as Diablo III.

You don't have to use the microtransactions either to expand. It is there if you just want it. I don't see the big deal.

Hahahahahahahahahaha. *gasp* HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Well there's no more doubt, you're one of those people who ties their purchasing decisions to their self worth. I disagree with your pre-order choice and you accuse me of being poor. 😀 What are you in 4th grade? I don't like your choice of candy bar so you accuse me of lacking 50 cents to buy it because my family's poor? 😀 Come on, let's talk about who's dad can beat up who's next. 😛

I've listed my problems. Cities are too small, potential for trolling, dislike of online environment being effectively a pre-requisite, and dislike of EA in general.

For $60 I can buy a finely prepared Surf&Turf with sides/beer at a local restaurant, 10 lbs of quality coffee, a better full-priced video game, tickets and refreshments for 3 movies, or any number of other things that will, from what I've seen, give me more enjoyment than a copy of SimCity 2013.

You want to play it for social purposes? Fine. Tons of people play farmville for that very reason. I have no desire to join them and think farmville is a boring waste of time.

According to whom ?
Addressing fan concerns regarding SimCity's always-on DRM in a blog entry on the SimCity website, Maxis vice president Lucy Bradshaw said "creating a connected experience has always been a goal" for the game.

She further explained that some of SimCity's simulation aspects must be rendered on EA's servers for the game to run. Bradshaw said a "massive amount of computing" goes into this, and the game's Glassbox engine can only achieve these tasks through a constant Internet connection.

"You’re always connected to the neighbors in your region so while you play, data from your city interacts with our servers, and we run the simulation at a regional scale," she said.

More specifically, trading between cities and simulation effects like pollution and crime, are processed on EA's servers and then data is sent back to players' cities on their local PC. "Every city in the region is updated every three minutes, which keeps the overall region in sync and makes your decisions in your city relevant to any changes that have taken place in the region," she said.

In addition to technical necessesities, Bradshaw said SimCity requiring a constant Internet connection is in the best interest of "fun." She explained that features like leaderboards and challenges would not be possible without being online.

That seems like once you get knocked offline, then you can't do squat, until you get your connection back.

Look who now is tie their purchasing decisions to their self worth.

And how am I doing that exactly? I just listed a few things I'd rather spend $60 on. I'm not tying my self worth to them.

I've never insulted you over buying SimCity 2013. You on the other hand started immediately insulting me when I so much as offered a dissenting opinion.

Says a child berating an unreleased game, careful not to fall off that EA hate bandwagon. I hear it hurts.

I'm berating it based on what EA/Maxis have chosen to reveal to the public and what their representatives have said, and my own opinions of what make a good game.

So like you, I'm basing my decisions on what information is available and my own personal preferences. What you can pcslookout don't seem to understand is that it's OK for two people to look at the same thing, and one like it while the other doesn't. I believe this topic is covered before age 10 in most families.

If you buy gold or silver amc tickets you can get 4 movies out of $60. Or you can go to one of those ones with comfortable lean back seats that serve beer and you can get 2 sessions out of that $60. 😀

Anyway, as with all EA games, cautiously optimistic. Being too excited about any EA game is always a bad move.

I guess the family that covered it for you forgot to say, even differing opinions on something shouldn't resort to name calling.

Calling you a child isn't name-calling, it's an indictment of your maturity level. A point you seem intent on proving in this thread.

You got pissed off and defensive over my opinion of a video game. Act like a child, you're going to get treated like one. Hell this is an internet forum so for all I know you are, literally, a child.

I think I'm having enough fun watching Jesse cox's playthroughs though I am very skeptical of the always online requirement. I think I'll just keep looking at walkthroughs and play Simcity 4 if I need to actually play. Still holds damn well even after all these years especially with the Rush Hour expansion.

The new Sim City is going to be Diablo III all over again.

It will be purchased by thousands of ignorant people whose excitement is based purely off of the nostalgia from older titles in the series, without realizing that the company developing it already went to shit years ago, and this shiny new version coming out is actually a marginalized, dumbed-down, heartless shell of what the franchise used to be, with half of the features.

On release day, there will be massive server outages with the forced always-online DRM, because of the massive influx of people overloading EA's server infrastructure. The problem will last for days and the forums will explode with technical support requests.

When the server login problems finally subside, people will then realize how mediocre the game actually is, and there will be dozens of nerd rage threads all over the internet, complaining "WHAT DID THEY DO TO SIM CITY?" and "THIS IS LITERALLY ONE OF THE WORST GAMES I'VE EVER PLAYED" because people still haven't learned their lesson about giving into hype about unreleased games.

The resemblance will be uncanny. It's hilarious. (I was also going to say depressing, but I have no sympathy for people who blindly put down $60 for a game they know very little about).

Scott, you're being a bit harsh. Personally I won't pay $60 for a game and generally I won't pay more that $25. I adopted a no demo or open beta no purchase strategy for new games years ago and its served me well. If crap loads of people start speaking about the great time they're having I may make an exception but I really doubt I'd pay $60 for it.

I forgot Dan is thinking the right way. There are several warning signs out for this game:
Always on
Many people say the cities seem small
Single threaded

The warning signs are all there of it being a hit, but user reviewed very poorly. The DRM is reason enough to avoid it, but it fails to utilise modern hardware and the restrictions placed on the gameplay that causes are problematic. This is a lowest common denominator game targeted at nostalgia + pretty graphics.

No offense, but that's an incredibly arrogant, asinine view.

This isn't an MMO we're talking about. This isn't an online area shooter. This is Sim ****ing City.
For those of us who've been with the series since inception, who grew up with it, the idea of FORCED, always on DRM/interaction has no real place with this style of game. Multiplayer has it's place and can offer up exciting new avenues in the series and genre. But the way it's being implemented has ways of making older, more jaded gamers less than optimistic. Especially when you consider EA is in charge.

I have no opinion on the game itself. I hope it's great, and if it is, I'll likely buy it. But this idea that you're somehow some backwards old curmudgeon or anti-social recluse just because you question the need for always-on DRM and the possibilities of troll exploitation, in a game that doesn't need it to begin with? Laughable. Just stop.

This.

I still haven't stopped playing SC4, and if this game is a flop, I'll still continue to play 4. With the NAM, CAM and all of the custom content being released daily, even 10 years after release I don't think SC4 is going anywhere. Unless for some reason this game is really amazing, and they give us the tools to completely modify it like they have in previous versions.
