Ugh looks like its single threaded...

Well it'll be a pass from me. That is almost certainly the reason why city sizes are so small and it means city sizes will never increase because they would basically have to rewrite the entire game for it.

They managed 8 threads with BF3 why not the same with a game that debatably could make even more use of multicore CPU's.

I was surprised by this too, there are a lot of calculations that run on a city, I would think using multiple cores would have been a high priority for them. The more I find out about this game, the more I think it's not going to be too popular. And for a game that seems to be going in the direction of co-op play that's not going to be a good thing. It could turn into a ghost town in record time if people hate it. Unless of course it becomes popular by farmville fans.

CitiesXL is a good game in my opinion, but it's unplayable. Once your city gets to a decent size it lags. It's single-threaded and runs like absolute horseshit. I like the game though.

This is me running with a 3.2ghz core 2 duo. E8400. Maybe a new processor can handle it but it runs like shit for me.

Nope. I've got a core i5 and its runs like horse shit too 🙂

I think that's kind of unfair. This game is being created to cater to the lowest common denominator in terms of hardware, so I'm sure it will run fine. Imagine the outcry from casual players who would lag out if they lagged out with 50k/70k pop.

Casual players can suck it. My response to them would be build smaller cities or go back to farmville.

Plenty of players stuck to the small tiles in simcity 4 because their comp was balls (i was one of these players) when they upgraded eventually that opened up the medium and large tiles for them to play on. Catering to the lowest common denominator is the worst idea. It leaves no room for expansion later.

Dosent really matter though does it, they have catered to the lowest common denominator and it cannot be undone at this point.

Cue someone citing the obvious about EA being a business blah blah and only wanting to make money etc etc. 😛

One of their responses to criticism on single threaded is that some computing power for their
Glassbox engine gets done on their cloud

I played for about 90 minutes and enjoyed it quite a bit. I definitely plan on downloading this on day 1.

SC4 had some shoddy coding though. It runs terrible on modern systems as well. My take is that this game is going to be really huge, one of the most anticipated this year, I'm sure there's some reason behind it. If it doesnt run well there will be an uproar.

Doesn't the cloud mainly do the inter-region transfers?

Could be like Diablo 3 which has a lot of the game running on some server.

People in this thread that are complaing about the game being single threaded should read the other beta weekend thread. IIRC it goes into the technical problems with making this game multi-threaded.

Does anyone know how long the servers will be up for Simcity 5 official game? I want to be able to play it in 5 years if I want to.

Gotta freaking be kidding me. No multicore??

Of all games on the planet this should have been the one to take advantage of that the most! That was one reason I was really excited for this one. I thought for sure it would. I figured we'd be able to do amazing things and it would scale to huge cities. Can't believe they missed this opportunity. This is why the city feels so small now. This makes me angry.

LoL got another Sim City closed beta invite, this one is for a short time tonight. What a weird beta process this one!

Congratulations! You have been selected to take part in an exclusive Closed Beta for SimCity, which will be available in stores and through Origin next week. In preparation for launch, we are stress testing our servers and could use your help. Unlike our previous Closed Betas which locked out certain content, you will be able to play the full game!

This Closed Beta will run from 5:00 PM (PST) to 9:00 PM (PST) on Wednesday, February 27. We have condensed the amount of time in this test to encourage as many players as possible to log in and push our servers as hard as possible. We will be sending you a unique redemption code that day which will grant you access to the Closed Beta. Don't miss this great opportunity to test and play the game. Thanks in advance for your help!

Sincerely,
Maxis

Well at least its the full game! and despite the limited window - from 5pm to 9pm PST - is perfect for me in EST since thats at night when i have free time to play something

Nice, since Sim City is coming out next week, it looks like they are doing a different take on a play at home test. Usually they only do this for employees with the final pressed builds. I guess since it is interconnected with online, they are bringing in active Sim City players from previous beta/alphas.

What did everyone in this thread preorder? The whole deluxe kit from Origin or the regular game from Amazon?

+1.. As of last night the sim city website had a $60 version and $80 version. Then you also have amazon.

Where's the best place to buy the game?

If you preorder from Origin, you get $20 off a future order. That makes it s bit better option than Amazon.
