Should the words ni--er/n-gga be universally punishable?

Are you kidding me?!?!! You are what is wrong with this country!!!!!

Many people with old wealth got it from slavery. Who deserves the money?

I hear blacks say that whites owe them money for reparations. My family has no ties to slavery. Should I be obligated to pay?

What about Al Sharpton who is continuously stirring up the pot and causing trouble? Ironically, his lineage *does* have slave owners in it.

If one had to pay for slavery, who would it be- me, with no ties whatsoever to slavery, or Al Sharptop, with weak ties to slavery?

Al Sharpton's ancestors owned slaves? Is that true or ar eyou confused? Al Sharpton's ancestor was owned by Strom Thurman's great grandfather, or something like that, so I don't know if that's what you are thinking of.

I never use the word, but I think it's pretty demeaning (either variation) and it's incredibly stupid when black people call each other that. Get out of the ghetto, freaks.

omg that was racist, wasn't it?

Shocking there are so many here ready to abolish free speech. Let the un/intelligent show their worthiness. If you are/were smarter than those who use those terms are/were, why would you care what words they use?

Well duh, because you didn't earn it...reparations are a stupid idea...want to be compensated for the slave years? Go collect from the ones who captured them and sold them.
No, I don't condone slavery, but then again, WE are not responsible for the wrongs in history. If we're gonna start that, then ALL of youse get the hell off my land. (my kin STILL lives on reservations)...You're ALL squatters...

You are going to have one hell of fight with that one.

Ya think?

Well if I get banned for this good bye everyone...but these are my true feelings:
Note: I wont make cliffs...so go away if you don?t like to read

Ok let?s assume some things before I begin:

On public airways you cannot say certain things like fcvk, n!gger, etc. Personally I feel that that is BS, as well as most of the FCC's other regulations, but that?s another debate. However, on any non-public airway, such as cable TV, you can say and show whatever you want, the only reason XXX porn isn?t showed is because advertisers will drop like flies. Anyways, I think censorship in any form or fashion is complete BS...
In the workplace the laws are set by the administration. If they do not think curse words or demeaning words are professional and it is a private business, then they should be able to ban anything they want. It?s their business; let them run it how they see fit. So long as they aren?t infringing on employee rights, it?s all good.

Now...on to n!gger. One thing I never could understand...is why do people say the 'n-word'...why can?t you say n1gger? Why is it the WORST word to say? I know people who curse left and right but when I say n1gger they get all defensive and upset, despite their race. So, that is argument number one. There is no social consistency. If people are going to get pissed off about one fcking word they need to get pissed about all curse and demeaning words or just not be pissed at all. No one makes a huge deal about words like ch1nk and beautiful ray of sunshine, do they? Well, at least no where NEAR a huge of a deal as n1gger. There is no logical reason n1gger should bother anyone (yes even black people) more than someone calling you a bag of sh1t that your b1tch as$ mother puked out of her vagina. This brings me to point number 2. IT?S A FCKING WORD...a word is a word and it is as simple as that. It?s JUST like marriage. Ok, so you let people get civilly unionized...it?s the SAME DAMN THING as marriage...it?s just a different word...WHY does it matter? what entitles a group of people to a WORD....jesus christ...its just a formation of fcking sounds that people make...I don?t get what the big deal is. Just because some black people assume that their group is special enough to have their own word that is demeaning to JUST their race is complete and total BS, I also think it is very racists to assume such things. And before anyone brings up BS about n1gger being used during slavery and the civil war: I would say it is safe to say there are VERY few, if any, people still around that were directly affected and still are affected by slavery in the civil war. So my ancestors called your ancestors bad names and enslaved them. I?m sorry they were like that but the problem has been solved, slavery is outlawed, get the fck over it.
Point number 3 is why the hell does n1gger have to automatically assume black people? When I call my friends a bunch of n1ggers it doesn?t mean I think they are black people who are lesser people, it means I think they are acting like a bunch of dumb asses or being ignorant...lets look at the dictionary definition of this word:

"Slang: Extremely Disparaging and Offensive. A person of any race or origin regarded as contemptible, inferior, ignorant, etc.?

That?s the definition in which I use the word n1gger. Notice how it is not geared just towards blacks. It is geared towards people who are essentially just dumb asses.

People, let?s face...the ONLY problem with the word n1gger, is n1ggers. People who act like n1ggers and are proud of it get pissed off because someone calls them what they are. It would be like someone calling me a fat ass. Well...lets see...I?m fat...my ass is also fat...I am therefore a fat ass. If I felt bad about being called a fat ass then i would go lose weight.

The only time it is inappropriate to call people a name such as n1gger or b1tch or whatnot is when you generalize. I can?t just go assume that ALL black people are n1ggers, because that?s simply not true. You also can?t assume that no white person isn?t a n1gger either, because I know some white people who are the biggest n1ggers of them all.

So, if someone calls you a n1gger maybe you should think about it next time before you go whine. Take a look at your life and think to yourself, 'hmm...is this person right, am i really ignorant and blind to the world?' if this is true, maybe you should change something about your life. If it's not, you should shrug it off. People get pissed off all the time and call people names. Just because you and the rest of the n1ggers have to get pissed off because you assume that it is generalized to just your race does not entitle you to special treatment or retraction of my god damn rights!

Now, if for some reason someone did actually generalize a whole group of people and actually did degrade someone based on race...that?s different. Its racism and action should possibly be taken.

And a note to all my black friends out there: "You can only be destroyed by believing that you really are what the white world calls a ******" (James Baldwin).

I'll be honest and say that I didn't read your entire response, but in relation to why the word n*gger in particular is seen as distasteful--it relates to the history of the word itself. In the United States at least, I am hard-pressed to think up curse words or terms directed towards specific groups of people that were used in such a hateful manner, and for so long, after an already insidious past.

No racially-demeaning labels are "accepted" by society, it's just that few other racial groups suffered so much for such a long period of time. Beyond that, the outcry against slavery and segregation was so powerful that words associated with perpetuating these institutions became essentially taboo, n*gger being foremost among them.

the only reason that they are 'directed' towards a group of people is because those people help direct it towards themselves. Blacks have been calling white people crackers for ages but you never see a huge debate about it. Also with northerners always calling southerners rednecks and assuming that all southerners are racist.

i agree that the black society back before the abolistion of segrigation had it tough, no doubt. However, i cannot get over the fact that a word is just a word. It is nothing else. A word means whatever YOU personally want it to mean. There are two big problems:
1) there are people going around who use n1gger specifically targeted at only black people
2) lots of black people assume that n1gger only relates to black people

Again, things happened in the past that people just need to get over. You dont hear any americans bitching about what britain did to us back before we were a country do you? We got pissed, freed ourselves, and moved on. They black comunity has been freed, but some refuse to move on despite the fact that their actualy generation was not directly affected by these specific events in history.

Sadly, a word does not only mean what you decide it to mean. In an individual sense it might, but on a societal level, the word n*gger is going to evoke images of, for example, crowds of white individuals yelling it at blacks. To say that n*gger can be directed at anyone is partially true; you technically could call anyone you want by that term. But to ignore its history in relation to blacks is bordering on ignorance.

Also, the treatment that Americans received at the hands of the British hardly equates to the institution of slavery. I understand the point you were trying to make, but the two situations are not at all similar in degree.

As for the current generation not being affected by these events--again, I would say that is false. The repercussions of slavery and segregation are still felt today, this discussion being a perfect example. You cannot simply free a group of individuals after a couple centuries of oppression, and then expect that history--and its economic, cultural, psychological, and societal consequences--to simply disappear.

Harping on the wrongs of the past is not the way to move forward, I'll give you that much. But to ignore the past and its influence on the future isn't the solution, either.

Again, I disagree with you here that the term n*gger can be so easily separated from blacks. That'd be like saying ch*nk or cracker could refer to any racial group. Sure, it possibly could, but inherent in the word's definition and its history of usage is a link to a specific group of people.

Think of all the people on here who have posted threads of annoyance when their friends/family call a computer a "CPU" or "motherboard." Similar, albeit much more watered down, situation.

i can see your point of view and agree with you to an extent. i guess my problem is i cant stand that the word n1gger is hated so much more than words like beloved patriot, cracker, redneck, beautiful ray of sunshine, etc.

Yes, OK, that's all well and good. But if a white or other non-black calls his friends (of any color, but blacks are usually the most offended) "n_gga", he'll get punished in some way. What the OP is asking, is why is it OK that a black person can call his friends "n_gga" and it be OK, but a white person can't do the same?

You really can't understand why?

Try calling your friends assholes and then a stranger an asshole and think about it again.

In the previous example, it's a black guy calling his friends the N word, and a white guy calling his friends(not random strangers) the N word. If a passing black guy hears the black guy calling his friends that, nothing would come of it. If a passing black guy hears the white guy calling his friends the N work, the black guy would probably get offended and do something.

It's not about white people calling random black people "n_ggas", it's about the oversensitivity of black people to other races using their (black peoples) racial slurs in the same manner that black people use them on themselves.

And, for the record, I'm Mexican, and don't get offended by racial slurs. You call me a beautiful ray of sunshine, I'll ask for a towel, or say something like "nah, i'm a wetankle, the rio grand isn't that deep"

It's strange how words can carry such baggage sometimes, but in this case, I'd say it relates largely to history. That, and I'm guessing at some point (around the time of desegregation, perhaps), there was likely a huge outcry against disparaging terms for blacks such as n*gger.

And, for the record, I'm Mexican, and don't get offended by racial slurs. You call me a beautiful ray of sunshine, I'll ask for a towel, or say something like "nah, i'm a wetankle, the rio grand isn't that deep"

I know people who would and would not be offended by non-blacks calling friends "n*gga," and I have non-black friends who do this. But in that same respect, I know people who would and would not likely be offended or upset if they heard a black person call a friend "ch*nk" or "cracker."

When a black guy calls his friend his "n-gga," he's not using it in a hateful way.

Again, it is the stranger that is hearing what you are saying. You won't get in trouble by saying it to your friends, only if a stranger hears it. He doesn't know the context of how you are saying it.

I'm not going to judge who is a racist and who is not by merely saying the word, but in this day and age, you have to be borderline retarded or fully retarded to not understand the implications. The assumption is that everyone understands the word and the context in which it is to be used or not used, yet some people fight to use the word? So fvcken what if the black culture embraces it, that doesn't give you any more right to use it.

You would call your friends derogatory names in jest or in terms of endearment, but that does not give me (a stranger) the right to go and call your friends douchebags unless I'm looking for a fight.

I don't mean to come across rude, but it really is a simple concept.
