Bit of a hike for me, but I'm glad someone's doing it. Maybe it'll get out here some time.

It's decent for fast food, but it's not authentic. There's a daphnes minutes from me. It's good for a fix though. I remember the greek spots on South St in Philly as being very good, 'course food around that area is good in general but memories are always better than the real thing.

Most all Gyro's made in this country are not pure lamb, heck, not even in Greece is it pure lamb, it just is too expensive to do it like that.
Usually, it is 30% lamb, and 70% beef, though, some add pork & chicken as well.

Done right, it is good stuff.
Done via a microwave, it is horrible.

a good gyro with the right tzadziki sauce can be a religious experience. Do NOT put fucking lettuce on it. I got one in the Boston area and other than putting lettuce on it, it was really good.
Make sure they cut the meat from a spit and not some frozen, pre-shaped crap.

Having the tzadziki made right helps too, our little place doesn't use any lettuce, just onions and a bit of small chopped tomato.

Is pretty good place if you're ever in Clearwater.

It's not even large or fancy, but constantly busy.

One of the best things is they are a family owned business that is consistently good.

Olympus Gyros in Mt Prospect IL was where I tasted my first, and my best, to this day. And they have those really skinny fries too. Good spanakopita as well.

Gyros are awesome. It's a wonder nobody's started a Greek fast food chain. Might not be great, but as said above, even a bad gyro is pretty good.

Too late, we have King Gyros around here... Drive through Gyros from 10:30 to 10:30

Because of Tarpon Springs and its Greek community there are tons of great Greek places in the Tampa area. You'll never see that pate-on-a-stick crap either.

Yeah, I know, have been going up to Tarpon since even the 60's growing up.

That little place still as about good as anything farther north for the most part.

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

My grandfather did all the murals at Louis Papas back then, he used to walk into the place up there in Tarpon with and it would be free food and he was treated almost like royalty.

Just his murals drew a lot of business at the time.

It's been redone, haven't been up there in a long time.

He used to be that way in a lot of places, even Bob Heilmans Beachcomber he did paintings on the beach he was old friends with and several places before he passed on.

There are several of his murals still all over the area.

A lot of the family thought I would follow in his footsteps, but I moved here slow and stuck with my other grandfathers trade, tool and die.

Maybe if he had been more adaptable to that earlier I might have, I went out with him a few times on weekends and he said i painted too slow, he could through a large mural up in about 10 hours over a couple days that looked great solo.

That is way off topic though, sorry.

A couple weeks ago, I got lamb on a pita from a halal food truck at the flea market. It was so good, I'd drive the 20 miles just for the food. In fact, that's my plan this weekend. That's the one good thing about city life; interesting food choices. We've been getting /some/ good stuff out here, but not like the city.

We have one in the Charlotte, NC area. www.showmars.com

Dude, I miss it. Out in San Diego now. Also, did you ever go to the Greek Festival in Dilworth?

Sadly, I did not. I loved the Greek festival in Winston Salem, though (a few years later). After 8 years in Dallas I longed for some good Greek food (one gem I found just before I moved), but I am finding lots of great Greek food here in Grand Rapids!

You won't notice a distictive taste between gyro meat and beef. Besides, it's mixed.

There's a place down here I order gyros from along with a fried pickle., It's the best! There's another place called Cafe Athens I've been meaning to try.
