I think, although it is totally absurd, that when you portray Bush as a chimp it is an attack on Bush, but when you portray a black person as a chimp you are making a racial statement. I say this purely as an artifact of racial slur history.

In fact humans and chimps are the same species, or would be so classified if we were objective about it.

That is the point. American publications have a long history of portraying black people as chimps, apes, gorillas, and monkeys in degrading cartoons. Bush was portrayed as a chimp because he looks like a chimp.

No, never once have I gotten a chimp pregnant.

Slight point of fact for the objective. The genus species for humans is Homo sapiens. The genus species for chimps is Pan troglodytes. Different species. Different genus. Same tribe, family, and up though.

NY Post cartoon seems to link Obama to dead chimp

NEW YORK ? A New York Post cartoon that appears to link President Barack Obama to a violent chimpanzee drew outrage Wednesday from civil rights leaders and elected officials who said it echoed racist stereotypes of blacks as monkeys.

The cartoon in Wednesday's Post by Sean Delonas shows two police officers, one with a smoking gun, standing over the body of a bullet-riddled chimp. The caption reads: "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill."

The cartoon refers to a chimpanzee named Travis who was killed Monday by police in Stamford, Conn., after it mauled a friend of its owner.

Obama signed his administration's economic stimulus plan on Tuesday.

Critics called the cartoon racist and said it trivialized a tragedy in which a woman was disfigured and a chimpanzee killed. Many urged a boycott of the Post and the companies that advertise in it.

"How could the Post let this cartoon pass as satire?" said Barbara Ciara, president of the National Association of Black Journalists. "To compare the nation's first African-American commander in chief to a dead chimpanzee is nothing short of racist drivel."

The Rev. Al Sharpton called the cartoon "troubling at best given the historic racist attacks of African-Americans as being synonymous with monkeys."

Sharpton planned to picket the Post on Thursday along with others.

Col Allan, editor-in-chief of the Post, defended the work.

"The cartoon is a clear parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut," Allan said in a statement. "It broadly mocks Washington's efforts to revive the economy. Again, Al Sharpton reveals himself as nothing more than a publicity opportunist."

The cartoon drew hundreds of comments on the Internet including at the liberal Huffington Post, where columnist Sam Stein wrote: "At its most benign, the cartoon suggests that the stimulus bill was so bad, monkeys may as well have written it. Most provocatively, it compares the president to a rabid chimp."

It is not the first time that Delonas, the longtime cartoonist for the Post's Page Six, has raised eyebrows with a heavy-handed caricature.

An earlier Delonas cartoon made fun of Paul McCartney's ex-wife Heather Mills for having only one leg, and another compared gay people seeking marriage licenses to sheep lovers. In a cartoon last month, an enormous Jessica Simpson dumps boyfriend Tony Romo for Ronald McDonald.

Bullshit.

Classy is totally right. It is just so glaringly obvious. Funny how people don't admit it or call this interpretation "bullshit" denial much?

Sure there can be other interpretations....but the cartoon is obviously poking fun at Obama and he is the monkey.

Like Classy said, "let's keep it real."

Should people be offended? nahhh probably not. Because of the recent monkey attack it is obvious the Post was just playing off the misfortune of that horrible incident.

Just imagine if there WASN'T any recent monkey attack!

Dude straight up, there is just no way anyone could look at that cartoon and read the stimulus comment and not think Obama. Give a "bleeping" break. Doesn't mean that was the intent of the cartoon, but it damn sure is hard to think of any other thing. Anyone remember the "lipstick on a pig"?

 Only those who are overly sensitive and/or embrace the victim mentality lept to that sort of asinine conclusion. I saw it before reading about Sharpton's headuphisass wailings and BHO was not who I thought of. Obviously anyone paying attention knows it's about congress - not BHO. Anyway, no matter who you think the chimp was - it's still quite a good comic as it mixes two current events that are all over the news. Racism had NOTHING to do with it.

This has nothing to do with being overly sensitive. And regardless of the intent, only a complete an utter dumb@ss would fail to see the glaring possible racist tone of the cartoon.

Who wrote the stimulus bill, since obviously that's what they meant by the "write the next one"? Obama or congress?

And have you ever caught a windmill?

I never caught a windmill and clearly you've never caught a clue. Stop with the dumb argument of who wrote the stimulus. Its the Presidents bill and even a blind, deaf, and dumb person knows that. At least find a better argument.

It's not racism. People used a Chimp many times when referencing GWB.
