It's not racism. People used a Chimp many times when referencing GWB.

Umm because he looks like one and has intelligence of one, maybe?

Obama does not plus has IQ of like 180+..

yeah i failed to see the subliminal racism in the photo....although perhaps the post could've made a caption of someone discovering that the stimulus bill was written by a monkey". it would make the same point: there was no logic or pattern to the stimulus bill and it was a mess!

why not just shoot the bill.

Why represent the bill as a Chimpanzee?? Maybe it could have been a Neanderthal instead? WHY a Chimp?

It's a "real" paper with a tabloid newspaper format and a conservative editorial board. That last bit isn't too surprising given that Rupert Murdoch first bought it back in '76 and repurchased it in '93 by News Corp. Though it should be noted it's only in recent years that it's gone from its liberal slant from the '30s to its current conservative one.

You might want to consider it the Fox News of the print press, but with even more "bias" and "advocacy" in its stories.

[edit] They represented it as a chimp because of the local news where a chimp owned as a pet made the headlines when it was shot after attacking its owner's friend. The editorial board's logic was that was a current topic, the stimulus bill was a current topic, let's mix the two and make a political cartoon.

Imagine if Lieberman were president, and the bill passed. We'll also pretend Martha Stewart made headlines burning a pot roast on national TV. Now imagine if the Post ran a cartoon depicting Lieberman as a smoking pot roast being pushed back into the oven with a caption along the lines of, "The stimulus package's not done yet." Is it totally inappropriate showing a Jew being shoved into an oven or okay because it's just showing that the stimulus package needs more work? [/edit]

BTW, it is still in poor taste -- I'd rather not see a picture of a monkey bleeding to death on a parking lot >_>

The average Joe knows that the president didn't write the "stimulus bill". It's Al trying to convince people that he actually contributes in a positive manner to society.

Bullshit.

Dude straight up, there is just no way anyone could look at that cartoon and read the stimulus comment and not think Obama. Give a "bleeping" break. Doesn't mean that was the intent of the cartoon, but it damn sure is hard to think of any other thing. Anyone remember the "lipstick on a pig"?

I'm getting the impression that every time you see a monkey you associate that with "blacks".

Let's review possible recent events that could cause someone to portray a dead monkey to the framers of the stimulus bill.

A. The recent stimulus bill is so absurd and the authors, Congress, acted like a bunch of crazed chimps by trying to get this thing passed. These people are attacking America and trying to rip our "financial faces" off.

or

B. Obama did not create this bill and has not acted like some crazed wild animal which happens to be a chimp.

I'm sorry, but you people are taking "writing" too literally. Like classy said, lets be real. He didn't specifically write the bill, but Obama is the face, major promoter, lead persuader to the people of the U.S., whatever you want to call him of the stimulus bill. Even in this own forum at this thread: http://forums.anandtech.com/me...id=52&threadid=2276817 it begins with "With Obama as the new president, pushing his so called "stimulus" bill...." It's like saying it wasn't Bush's idea to invade Iraq, he just did it because Congress gave him the power.. don't be stupid.

It would be nice if he would use some of that 180+ IQ to actually LEAD and not be lead around like a little bitch by President Pelosi.

It actually took me several seconds after seeing the cartoon to figure what exactly Al could have been referring to.

My train of thought was such:

This was about that chimp that was shot by police.
<reads caption>
Ha, they are saying a hyped-up monkey wrote that assinine stimulus bill!
I agree, Congess is full of crazy monkeys!
..
Wait, why is Al Sharpton mad?
How many black congressmen are there, anyway? Less than 5%?
..
Oh.. Obama.
..
Gah! Sharpton is such a stupid *&$*er!

The more I think about this the more I feel the names of the folks who did the cartoon and the names of the people who published it should be well known and actively identified so that people can spit on them. I don't see how this can be anything other than an attempt to implant the notion in the minds of the public that somebody should kill the President of the United States an advertisement to propel some psycho into action to accomplish the real wishes of these jokers.

Thanks Loopy for 411. I went to their site and it didn't look real so I questioned if it was parody of some sort. Guess not. Sad.

Newspapers are printed in either black and white or colored editions. Shouldn't he protest that too?

Yeah, racism is stupid, but so is trying to construe anything and anything as racist.
Besides, Bush was often portrayed with ape-like features, hinting at his less-than-average primate intelligence. Wouldn't it be a sign of equality for Obama to enjoy the same luxury? (Though I don't know that this cartoon's intent was to directly reference Obama. Either way, who cares.)

Classy is totally right. It is just so glaringly obvious. Funny how people don't admit it or call this interpretation "bullshit" denial much?

You have to understand the mentality of people trying to deny or act ambiguous on this. Check out the "accidentally offensive" entries on the site the article was posted at:

Or just look at all the people who are branded as racist against Jews simply for criticizing Israeli policy, including many Jews themselves, Israelis included. Sharpton is a drama queen and an attention whore, but at least he has a valid point.

It's amazing in this day and age that anyone still pays attention to what people like Sharpon have to say. Chris Rock is a more relevant social commentator than that broken-record idiot.

Al Sharpton is one of the more racist people in america people. I am getting sick of this PC BS!!!!

Is the right to free speech also to not to offend anyone? Should the media bow down to any special interest group that has a problem with them?

NYP is a crapy newspaper around here in New England, Republicans use it for venting their anger on society, world and political dems, how low can they go....

I guess when al sharpton sees a monkey he immediately thinks "black people". When you get "offended" to innocuous stuff like this, it's only telling of what goes on in your head.... Freudian slip if you will.

I'm sorry but you're the one that made the logical leap of equating Obama to a monkey. The cartoon is a play on what happened to in CT and implies that a monkey wrote the bill (aka making a statement about the quality of the stimulus bill).

Whatever racists connotation you found were exclusively in your head; like I said if upon seeing a monkey you immediately make a connection to a black man, that's your problem.

How is anyone EVER going to make fun of Obama as President without it being construed as racist?

Obviously we weren't ready for a Black President if he isn't equal enough to be made fun of and ridiculed.
